Abstract

A system for remotely controlling an electrical switching device is disclosed. The system includes a junction box (302) configured to be mounted in a wall. An electrical switching device (118) is within the junction box (302). The system also includes a junction box cover (102) configured to cover at least a portion of the junction box (302). The system further includes a shielding plate (114) configured to have a high electrical conductivity. The shielding plate (114) is mounted proximate to the junction box (302) between the junction box cover (102) and the electrical switching device (118). The system also includes a directional, non-isotropic radio frequency (RF) antenna (110) sized to fit within the junction box cover (102) and configured to transmit RF signals. The RF antenna (110) is located between the shielding plate (114) and the junction box cover (102) at a predetermined distance from the shielding plate (114). The predetermined distance is selected to increase the capability of the RF antenna (110) to send and receive the RF signals.
