Abstract
A device which is placed over a stoma opening 3 to stimulate the lower bowel and circulate air flow to facilitate the evacuation of waste is powered by a battery operated motor. Preferably the device is attached directly to a colostomy bag 4 by means of a connection ring and may also have a timer switch. A method of using the device to evacuate waste includes the steps of placing it over the stoma 3 and switching it on to circulate air flow in the bowel thus extracting gases and stimulating natural bowel functions. The device may be used on artificial stomas following surgical procedures, for example colostomies.
Description
FIELD OF INVENTION -
The present invention relates to a device, system and method for evacuating waste product from the artificial stomas created as a result of surgical procedures I.e. colostomies.
DESCRIPTION
This application describes the use of a gas extraction device to remove gas from the bowel and stimulate bowel movement, by placing the device directly over the stoma or by being attached to a colostomy bag with a connection ring. The device when batteiy powered and operated for a period of approximately 5 minutes produces air extraction of natural gases from the bowel which in doing stimulates bowel movement to occur in 2 to 4 hours when the colostomy bag is filled. The device is designed to be used before retiring to bed so upon awakening the colostomy bag can be removed and a I piece plug placed over the stoma and left until bedtime when procedure is repeated as per previous evening.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention is placed over the stoma directly or attached to a colostomy bag which is modified with a connection ring to incorporate the said device, when powered it extracts natural gases from the bowel and stimulates movement, in so doing any faecal matter is prompted to flow naturally out through the stoma and into the colostomy bag. 2..
