Abstract

242,501. Wilson, R. A. March 9, 1925. Rod couplings.-Two tubular rods 11, 14 are coupled by means of members 10, 13, the member 10 having a tapered pin 16 adapted to engage a tapered counterbore 17 in the member 13. The pin 16 and counterbore 17 are each provided with mutilated threads 18, 19 respectively arranged in longitudinal panels or diametrically opposite sides thereof, while the lower end of said pin is formed with shoes 20 arranged to rest on seats 23, at the bottom of the counterbore between the thread panels, when connection is made. The contacting faces of the shoes and seats conform to the pitch of the threads and are extensions thereof. The shoes also carry the lowermost of the threads of the panels and extend radially the full thickness of the wall of the pin, while the seats are deeper than the threads. An annular collar 24 is formed at the upper end of the pin 16, to fit in the upper end of the well 17 above the threads 19 thereof, and a shoulder 25 overhangs said collar, the parts being so proportioned that as the threads are meshed by rotation of the member 10 the shoulder will frictionally engage the upper edge 26 of the member 13. The threads 18, 19 may be single or double.
