Abstract

An under run bar assembly 3 for a vehicle, such as those used in trucks or large commercial vehicle houses a sensor (4, Fig 1) for detecting obstructions in the path of a vehicle as it reverses. The sensor is connected to a control board which is housed entirely within the under run bar. On the end of the bar and in the line of sight of the driver are located lights (1and2) which act as a visual warning to the driver. The lights may be of different colours and flash to warn the driver of the distance to the obstruction. The advantage offered by the invention means that the driver does not need to look away from the rear of the vehicle as they reverse.

REAR VEHICLE UNDER RUN HOUSING A REVERSING SENSING SYSTEM
This invention relates to a rear vehicle under run or protection bar which houses the means for sensing and indicating to the driver when an obstruction is present behind the vehicle.
There are currently many reversing sensing systems in use, these have a sensing device/s, a control board and a method of indicating that an obstruction is present to the driver. Many commercial vehicles have an under run or protection bar fixed to the rear of the vehicle or trailer.
Whilst reversing a problem exists with the use of the reversing systems in that the driver of the vehicle has to look or listen for an additional input, from the reversing system.
The drivers eyes whilst reversing should be looking along the length of the vehicle to the rear either directly or with the use of mirrors, this is to ensure that the side of the vehicle catches nobody or any obstruction. This is particularly important whilst articulating a semi trailer.
The Rear under run is usually mounted on the extreme rear of the vehicle and is usually the focus of attention whilst reversing.
The reversing sensors are usually mounted on the rear of the vehicle and are connected electronically to a control board. These connections and the control board are very susceptible to mechanical damage and water ingress.
According to the present invention there is provided a vehicle rear under run in which a reversing sensing system is contained. The sensors are housed in the face of the under run which points towards the rear of the vehicle, the systems control board and cabling is housed inside the structure.
To signal the presence of an obstruction to the driver, indicating lights are mounted on the extremity of the under run.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompany drawings in which Figure 1 shows a view looking from the rear of the vehicle and shows a portion or the vehicles rear under run with a sensing device mounted in the rearwards face Figure 2 shows the end of the under run as viewed from a position towards the front of the vehicle Referring to the drawing the sensing device 4 is mounted in the face of the rear under run 3. When an obstruction is detected control cabling and circuitry housed within the under run 3 provides a signal to the indicating lights 1 mounted on the extremities of the under run The colour or flashing of the indicating lights signals the presence and distance from an obstruction to the driver, In order for the driver to receive an input from the system he does not have to move his gaze away from the rear extremity of the vehicle.
