Description
DESCRIPTION
AN ACOUSTIC CAVITY STOP
The present invention relates to a stop for an acoustic barrier for use in cavity walls and more specifically to an acoustic cavity stop for locating and securing in place acoustic insulation material within the cavity wall.
In order to reduce and prevent noise transmission vertically through a cavity at floor level in a cavity wall construction of the type commonly encountered between apartmentlflat dwellings it is known to use an acoustic insulation material in the cavity at the level of the floor. This acoustic material requires an acoustic cavity stop to be provided at the level of the floor and within the wall cavity to retain it in place and to protect it against water.
A known acoustic barrier is shown in Fig. I and comprises an acoustic grade material 1 which is located in the cavity between the outer face 2 of the wall and the edge of a floor 3 which extends through the inner face 4 of the wall. The cavity side of the inner face 4 is covered with thermal insulation 5, but this is interrupted at the level of the floor to accommodate the acoustic grade material 1. This known acoustic barrier fulfils the application of a cavity barrier for the reduction of noise transmission through the cavity of a cavity wall construction, but requires a separate drainage tray 6 to eliminate bridging of the cavity by water at this point which is built into the inner and outer walls of the cavity wall construction. This drainage tray requires weep holes 2 to be provided in the outer face 2 of the wall 8. A further disadvantage with this known acoustic barrier is that it requires a secondary mechanical fixing 7 to secure it to the inner face of the cavity wall construction.
Due to the fixing of the separate drainage tray 6 in the brickwork of the inner face 4 of the wall, the thermal insulation 5 must be interrupted and this can lead to cold bridging in that region.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an acoustic barrier stop for retaining an acoustic barrier material in place within a cavity wall.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide an acoustic barrier stop which includes an integral drainage tray.
It is yet another object of the present invention to provide an acoustic barrier stop which can be built into a cavity wall as building work proceeds.
According to the present invention there is provided an acoustic cavity stop comprising a first part defining a holder for holding an acoustic grade material, the holder having a securing bracket which is adapted, in use, to be built into the outer face of the cavity wall and a second part extending from the upper edge of the holder part to define a drainage tray.
Preferably, the holder is of L-shaped section and has a plurality of prongs or spikes on the inside face of the vertical limb which, in use, pierce the insulation material to secure same to the holder.
Preferably, the securing bracket extends the length of the acoustic cavity stop and has a plurality of gaps in it at intervals along its length which gaps form water drainage channels.
Preferably the securing bracket is adapted, in use, to be received between adjacent courses of bricks.
Preferably, the drainage tray has an upstanding portion which slopes upwardly from the holder. This is adjustable relative to the holder to accommodate a wide range of cavity widths.
Conveniently, the acoustic cavity stop is comprised of a resilient material such that in use the drainage tray is resiliently biased rearwardly with respect to the holder. This ensures that the upper edge of the drainage tray is biased into close contact with the cavity side of the inner face of the cavity wall.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided an acoustic cavity stop in accordance with the first aspect of the present invention and further comprising acoustic grade material mounted in the holder.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Fig. I shows a cavity wall with cavity insulation on the inner leaf thereof having a conventional acoustic cavity stop fitted in the cavity and abutting a floor level and a damp proof course drainage tray positioned in the cavity above the acoustic cavity stop.
Fig. 2 shows a perspective view of an acoustic cavity stop according to the present invention; Fig. 3 shows a side view of the acoustic cavity stop shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 shows a perspective view of the acoustic cavity stop shown in Fig. 2 with acoustic insulation in place; Fig. 5 shows a side view of the acoustic cavity stop with acoustic insulation shown in Fig. 4; Fig. 6 shows a side view of an acoustic cavity stop according to the present invention with acoustic insulation built into a cavity wall with cavity insulation on the inner leaf thereof and abutting a floor.
Referring to Figs 2 and 3 of the drawings together, there is shown an acoustic cavity stop according to the present invention. The acoustic cavity stop is typically comprised of rigid plastic i.e. polypropylene, though other materials may be envisaged within the scope of the present invention, and is of uniform cross-section throughout its length. The acoustic cavity stop is typically 500 mm in length to offer a manageable size for installation, but may be shorter or longer if this is preferred for particular applications. Preformed jointing pieces (not shown) may be provided to connect adjacent lengths of the acoustic cavity stop.
The acoustic cavity stop comprises a first portion, generally indicated by reference numeral 11, defining a holder for acoustic insulation, and a second portion, generally indicated by reference numeral 12, defining a drainage tray. The insulation holder 11 is of generally L-shaped section to receive between its walls a rectangular block of acoustic insulation 13, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. Prongs 14 are provided at spaced intervals on the inwardly facing side of the vertical limb of the holder 11 to secure the acoustic insulation in place. This is advantageous in that it avoids any need for adhesives or separate mechanical fixings such as are found in the prior art.
A bracket 15 projects from the outwardly facing side of the vertical limb of the holder 11. The depth of this is sufficient to allow the bracket 15 to be built into the outer face of the cavity wall between adjacent courses of brickwork as can best be seen in Fig. 6. Gaps are provided in the bracket 15 at intervals along its length which gaps allow water passing to the cavity side of the outer face of cavity wall to drain away to non-vulnerable areas of the wall.
The drainage tray 12 of the acoustic cavity stop comprises an angled extension to the uppermost edge (as viewed on installation) of the holder 11. This angled extension is adjustable in use by flexing it forwards or rearwards relative to the holder II so that it is able to bridge the cavity in which the acoustic cavity stop is located. It will be appreciated that by flexing the drainage tray forwards or rearwards relative to the holder a wide range of widths for the wall cavity can be accommodated. With the free edge of the drainage tray 12 in close contact with the cavity side of the inner face of the cavity wall any water condensing within the cavity will run down the drainage tray 12 and be directed towards the cavity side of the outer face of the cavity wall and thence into the drainage holes in the bracket 15 securing the acoustic cavity stop in place on the outer face of the cavity wall. In this way water condensate is directed to non-vulnerable areas of the cavity wall.
The acoustic cavity stop according to the present invention reduces noise transmission vertically through a cavity at floor level in a cavity wall construction, primarily between apartment/flat type dwellings split by floor levels.
The acoustic cavity stop according to the present invention can be supplied as an independent unit without acoustic insulation to allow retro fitting on site and act as an anchor for on site installation of alternative insulated closers.
The unique outer wall building in leg with its integral drain holes is designed to support the unit in situ without the need for secondasy fixing. The drain channels are spaced within its length to allow passage of water and hold such water to the back face of the holder which then acts as an effective dpc protection screen.
The rear face of the holder will hold water to the cavity side of the outer wall of a cavity wall construction and prevent water from reaching the acoustic grade insulation.
