Abstract

An attachment for the rear of a car, suitable for lifting and carrying a mobility scooter, has a screw driven by an electric motor for raising and lowering a framework on which the scooter can be supported. The attachment may be mounted on a tow hitch connection. There may be provision for the recharging of the batteries of a scooter.

Description

Mini Tail-Lift
Description
The Mini-Tail' lift is a device when coupled to the rear of a car will enable loads to be carried conveniently.
This device is specific to cars and principally aimed at providing a mechanical assistance for the transportation of mobility scooters and bulky loads.
Users of mobility scooters generally have to use them locally. If they wish to transport them to cities or parks current facilities are a burden having to load them into the rear of specially adapted vehicles or dismantle them to load into standard saloons. Neither option is convenient to a person whose health is challenging. The mini-tail lift is designed to have the scooter driven onto a loading plafform before being lifted mechanically for transportation.
A second use of the mini-tail lift is to assist with the transportation of bulky items that are a lifting risk to load into cars. An adapted lifting beam will allow convenient handling of these items reducing health related risk.
The device consists of a fixed steel or other material, section bolted to a standard car tow hitching point. Attached to this member is another steel section which can be raised, or lowered independently.
This second member is modified to suit its lifting purpose, principally but not uniquely a mobility scooter.
The device will use a motor, powered by the cars own battery, to raise and lower the lifting member.
When used to transport Mobility scooters a facility to re-charge the scooters batteries will be available.
The principle of operation is described below using figures 1 and 2 as aids.
The fixed beam [1] is bolted to a standard two bolt tow hitch connection to a car chassis. Lifting beam [2] is connected to the fixed beam [I] via a threaded screw [5]. A motor [3] and control [11] is used to turn pulley drive [4] which in turn rotates the threaded pulley [9].
Depending on the direction of motor rotation the lifting beam [2] is either raised or lowered.
To provide stability and to reduce load to the motor and pulley assemblies a bearing [6] and support tube [8] arrangement links the fixed beam and lifting beam.
During transporting of loads locking feature [10] is used to firmly bolt the fixed and lifting beams together.
Detachable support [7] can be manipulated to suit a variety of configurations. Other detachable supports can be engineered to suit the load carrying requirements.
For convenience the device will be designed to detach conveniently from the car when not required.

Claims (6)
