Abstract

A combined bicycle mud guard and lighting system illuminated by solar power. The mudguard has a plurality of lights b and an integrated solar panel e. The mudguard may also contain a printed circuit board d which may be a dawn till dusk printed circuit board and a battery pack c. The lights b may be light emitting diodes which may be coloured, a rear mudguard giving off a red light and a front light guard giving off a white light.

Description

1 Self illuminating mudguards 3 the present invention relates to front and
rear solar powered 4 mudguard lighting system, and self illuminating down tube attachment, particularly but not exclusively to the 6 lighting system for illuminating a bicycle or the like.
8 when bicycles are ridden at night they are typically illuminated 9 using battery powered lights or dynamo lighting systems.
however using these systems has the following disadvantages.
12 (a) when using a battery system you have to replace or recharge 13 the battery when the battery becomes too weak to power the 14 lighting system fitted.
16 (b) dynamo lighting systems produce drag, a most unwanted 17 effect for cyclists, making unwanted road noise and 18 hampering the bicycles performance.
(c) when using a dynamo system the lights are not powered 21 when the bicycle is not in motion.
23 (d) the lights cannot be seen side on, when passing a road 24 junction.
2 embodiments of the present invention will now be 3 described, by way of example only, with reference to the 4 accompanying drawings in which:- 6 diagram 1 shows a bicycle frame (d) which has illuminated 7 mudguards (a) front and (b) rear.
9 diagram 1 also shows an illuminated down tube attachment (c) to make the bicycle visible from the side.
12 diagram 1 shows bicycle mudguard (a) front. which would 13 be made from transparent material, and would be illuminated 14 using white light emitting diodes.
16 diagram 1 shows bicycle mudguard (b) rear, which would be 17 made from transparent material and illuminated using red 18 light emitting diodes.
19 diagram 1 shows down tube light attachment (c) which would made from transparent material and illuminated using amber 21 coloured light emitting diodes.
I diagram 2 shows parts (a & b) from diagram 1.
3 part (a) is a plastic reflector to increase illumination from 4 light emitting diodes (b). the light emitting diodes (b) are powered by a battery pack (c).
6 the solar panels (e) which are integrated and face sky ward 7 constantly recharge battery pack (c) during daylight hours 8 so that battery pack (c) always has enough power to 9 illuminate mudguards during the night.
11 printed circuit board (d) has dusk till dawn tecimology, and 12 switches lights on at night and off in daylight.
14 wires (g) connect all light emitting diodes (b) to battery pack (c) , printed circuit board (d) and solar panel (e).
17 the main body of the mudguard (h) is made from transparent 18 plastic so that when light emitting diodes are on.the whole 19 body of the mudguard will glow.
1 diagram 3 shows self illuminated down tube attachment 2 which would attach to the bicycle frame (diagram 1) 3 part (d) .the transparent tube has solar panel (b) 4 to recharge battery (d) that powers light emitting diodes (e) which are connected using wires (f) 6 and are switched off during daytime hours and on at night 7 time by the printed circuit board (c).

Claims (1)

  1. c-(\ " 1 the self illuminating mud guards have the following 2 advantages
    over current bicycle lighting systems.
4 the illuminated mudguards require no maintenance as they recharge themselves using solar panels.
7 the owner cannot forget to switch them on as the 8 dusk till dawn printed circuit board automatically switches 9 them on in poor light.
11 they do not produce any drag like a dynamo lighting 12 system, and do not produce any noise.
14 they do not require to be removed for recharging or to replace batteries at the owners expense.
17 the lighting system is integrated into the mudguards 18 so a larger area of the bicycle is illuminated allowing 19 the bicycle to be seen side on when crossing junctions.
21 the owner does not have to buy separate mudguards and 22 lighting system saving money and the weight of having 23 two separate items.
