Abstract
Bi lateral amputees, using a toilet, require fitted handrails to the facility or separate support frames. This invention replaces the armrests of wheelchairs with removable armrests. The appliance can be extended when required and retracted when not in use. When retracted the appliance permits full use of the wheelchair without having to remove the appliance. When extended the invention is self levelling and gives extra braking to the wheelchair. The appliance comprises a horizontal handrail 6 which fits into side tube 7 and which may be extended to the front of the wheelchair. A vertical leg support 11 extends to the ground at the far end of the handrail, said leg supporting the handrail and providing the extra braking.
Description
IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO WHEELCHAIRS
This invention relates to improvements in or relating to wheelchairs used by Bi Lateral Amputees.
At present, bilateral amputees, using toilet facilities, require fitted handrails to the facility or separate support frames. This invention replaces the armrests of those wheelchairs with removable armrests. The appliance can be extended when required and retracted when not in use. When retracted the appliance permits full use of the wheelchair without removal of the appliance. When fitted the invention does not hinder the user from self propulsion in any way or of a carer for pushing the chair.
When extended the invention is self levelling and gives additional braking.
Two units are required - one left and right hand.
This and other aspects of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a left hand armrest invention fitted to a wheelchair 1. In this drawing 2 and 3 are tubular parts of the armrest 4 which fit into the existing sockets of the wheelchair.
is a padded cushion fitted to the top of the armrest 4. The horizontal handrail 6 is fitted inside the swivel side tube 7 which is secured to the armrest 4 by the self levelling Hinge-pin 8 and is locked in the extended position by 9 a spring loaded locking pin and socket 10. The vertical support leg 11 which has a stop end 12 fitted is secured to the horizontal hand rail 6 by self locking hinge 13. The securing bracket 14 secures the horizontal rail 6 and vertical support leg 11 to the armrest 4 when retracted.
The right hand armrest is a mirror image of the left hand armrest.
Figure 2 is a front view of the left hand side of the invention in the extended position.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the left hand side of the invention in the retracted position..
It will be clear to those of skill in the art that the above described embodiment is merely exemplary of the present invention and that various modifications and improvements may be made to the invention described without departing from the scope of the invention
