Abstract

A golf putter head includes a transparent insert 1. Lines or other indicia are printed or etched onto the upper surface of the insert 2 and also onto the lower surface 4, so that a three dimensional image is formed. The player must align the lines or images to achieve the desired stroke.

Background

This invention relates to the game of golf. A golf putter is a specialised golf club that is usually only used on an area of a golf course referred to as the putting green. The putter is usually designed in such a way so as to impart a smooth stroke on a golf ball so that it rolls evenly on the green to the golf hole. The player will still need to consider a number of important factors in order to impart a smooth and consistent stroke on the golf ball so that it follows the correct line to the golf hole and rolls evenly and consistently. One of these factors is consistently striking of the golf ball from the middle of the putter head - this is usually referred to as the sweet spot on the putter head. The sweet spot on a putter head is a very small area that is difficult to locate with any accuracy and consistency. Accurate and consistent ball striking on a green with a putter is also dependant on the head and body positions of the golfer in relation to the putter head. Another factor to consider is the line of the putt - the line along which a putt must be struck for the ball to drop into the hole.

There are a myriad of different putters available in the marketplace designed to help golfers improve their putting. A conventional putter will usually have a 2 - dimensional line marked in the middle of the top of the putter head and this corresponds to the rough location of the sweet spot on a putter head (accurate location of the sweet spot on a putter head is important for consistent ball striking). A more recent innovation is the two-ball putter where two white disks are marked on the top of a putter head and this is designed to help in the location of the sweet spot and to pick the correct line of putt. The present invention proposes an alignment aid (hereafter referred to as "insert") that could be added to an existing putter head or incorporated during the manufacture of a new putter head. The present invention is designed to be superior to existing putter head designs currently available on the marketplace.

Statement of Invention

The present invention is a golf putter insert that is transparent with marking on the top and bottom of the insert that are etched andlor inked in such a way so as to give a 3 - dimensional aspect to the golfer and thereby improve the accuracy and consistency of the putting stroke. The invention is illustrated on page 5 by figures 1 and 2. The transparent insert could be any geometric shape, for example a cube, a prism, a cylinder, a cone, a wedge etc. In order to illustrate this invention a transparent wedge shape is chosen and shown on diagrams that appear on page 5. The markings referred to above could also be any two dimensional shape for example a line, a circle, an oval, a square, a star, etc. In order to illustrate this invention line markings are chosen on diagrams that appear on page 5.

Essentially, there are two lines - the first of the two lines is marked on the top of the transparent insert (marked 2 on figures 1 and 2 and illustrated on page 5) and the second of the two lines is marked on the bottom of the transparent insert (marked 4 on figures 1 and 2 and illustrated on page 5). Each of the two said lines are separated by a gap (marked 7 on figure 1 and illustrated on page 5) and it is this gap that gives the golfer a 3 - dimensional aspect to the putter head. When these two lines are in perfect alignment the putter face will automatically be in the perfect position to consistently strike the golf ball from the sweet spot of the putter face. Furthermore, the golfer's head and body positions will be consistently and correctly aligned and positioned for the perfect ball strike and for perfect alignment. The two lines referred to above are located directly above and below the sweet spot of the putter head and separated by a gap (marked 7 on figure 1 and illustrated on page 5). The golfer first sets the putter head so that it is perfectly square to the intended target line. The golfer will then move the putter head so that the two lines meet and when they do the golfer can see where the exact sweet spot of the putter head is. The golfer can now set the body and the putter head in the perfect positions, in relation to the golf ball and the intended target line to the hole and thereby set up to strike the golf ball from the sweet spot of the putter face and achieve consistent and accurate ball striking on the correct line to the hole.

The insert would normally be made of any transparent, semi-transparent or translucent material, such as glass, plastic, resin or other similar material.

Claims

Claims I. A golf putter insert that is see through, with a three

dimensional alignment device comprising straight lines (or other markings) and a gap between the markings.
2. A putter head insert with markings separated by a gap - markings are on the putter insert directly above and below the sweet spot of the putter head or incorporated into the putter head during manufacture.
3. A putter head with two lines (or any other markings) separated by a gap and marked on the putter head directly above and below the sweet spot of the putter head for accurate head and body alignment.
4. A putter head with markings separated by a gap and marked anywhere on the putter head for accurate head, body alignment or putter alignment.
5. A putter head that will enable golfers to locate the sweet spot with ease and accuracy.
6. A putter head that will enable golfers to place the putter head in the exact same position for each and every putt.
7. A putter head with marking to enable a golfer to achieve perfect head and body positions.
8. A putter head with marking that will enable golfers to consistently locate the correct line for a putt.
