Abstract
242,364. Armstrong, H. Y. Aug. 13, 1924. Packeting by wrapping-up. -Relates to wrap. ping-machines of the type in which the article to be wrapped, in its passage through the machine, withdraws wrapping material from a supply and becomes wrapped in the web. As shown, the article to be wrapped is fed by a plunger 31, Fig. 1, from a support 30 to the receiving end of a vertically swinging transfer element 32, pivoted on a shaft 34 and then in its lower position. A web W is drawn over a reel 68 and a table 69 above the support 30 and is draped in front of the article A as shown in Fig. 17. The transference of the article to the transfer element 32 causes the web to be applied in a partial bottom fold w, Fig. 18, a front fold w<1> and a top fold w<2>. Folding blades 85, Figs. 1 and 2, on the transfer element form end flaps w<3> and upper and lower triangular flaps w<4>, w<5>. During the upward movement of the transfer element to the position shown in Fig. 1 folding blades 86 turn down the upper flaps w<5> to form the top flap w<6>, Fig. 19, and the forward flaps w' thus formed enter oblique slots 87, Fig. 1, in the blades 86 preparatory to being laid flat in the subsequent movement to the right of the article. At the same time the portion w<8> of the web is applied to the rear side of the article, a roller 75 on a swinging arm 76 controlling this operation. The blades 85 are mounted on carriages 102, Fig. 2, by means of sliding stems 114 secured by screws 116 and the carriages are adjustably fixed in slots 120, equalizing arms 118 ensuring equal movement of the blades. The blades are caused to open and close at the required times by face-cams acting on rollers 105 and are normally urged together by the blades 86 which are acted on by a spring 110 and are secured for lateral adjustment in slots 87'. A bifurcated pusher 55, Fig. 1, forces the partiallywrapped article into a runway 45, during which movement the flaps w<7> are turned down to form the flaps w<10>, Fig. 20, the portion w<9> of the web is turned up on to the bottom of the article and the lower triangular flaps w<4>, w<11> are turned up to complete the wrapping by the forward edge 93 of plates 94. When the bottom fold w<9> has been applied, a knife 90, Fig. 1, is uncovered by moving a guard plate 140, a brake bar 73 is depressed to hold the web, and the movement of the article causes the wrapping of the package to be severed from the web. Prior to the brake bar 73 being depressed, the roller 75 has moved to the lower position shown in broken lines in Fig. 1 to draw another supply from the roll. The continued movement of the package carries it past hot-plates 96, in the event of the wrapper being of waxed paper, and into a cooling member 100. The parts 94, 96, 100 are laterally adjustable.
