Abstract

An artist's paper stretching board comprising a board 1 with an abrasive margin 3 for supporting the wet paper and four edging strips 2 with an abrasive margin which are placed on top of the paper and held in place with spring clips until the paper is dry and taught. Preferably the board 1 is made from wood, plastic, metal or any combination of these materials. The abrasive surface 3 may comprise a waterproof adhesive scattered with fine grains or grit. The stretcher board enables the paper to be released quickly.

Description

ARTISTS PAPER STRETCHING BOARD
The invention relates to an Artists paper stretching board that is used to stretch wet paper so that when dry it can be painted on with ease.
Artists using watercolour paints find that the paper wrinkles and cockles. To prevent this they first wet the paper then fix it to a board by adhering gummed tape around it's perimeter edge. Releasing it later is very troublesome.
The object of this invention is to provide a stretcher board that wet paper can be place on and held until dry stretched taught, and then be worked upon and released expediently.
Accordingly this invention provides a board with an abrasive margin that wet paper is placed on while four edging strips also having an abrasive margin are positioned around the edge of the board and held with spring clips in such a way as to grip the paper until dry stretched taught, ready to be worked upon and then released expediently.
Preferably the stretcher board and the edging strips would be made of wood. Or metal but may even be made of plastic, or a combination of materials.
A preferable embodiment of the invention will now be described with references to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows an exploded view of the invention.
Figure 2 shows an inverted view of an edging strip that shows the abrasive coating on the underside.
Figure 3 shows cross sectional detail of edging strips sitting on and over the edge of the board also a spring clip in place 4.
Figure 4 shows a raised view of the board with the edging strips 2, held in position with spring clips 4.
As shown in Figure 1, the stretcher board 1 has on its working surface a narrow margin of abrasive 3, around its perimeter, that consists of waterproof adhesive into which is broadcast fine aggregate such as silver sand or a grit of size 46 or similar.
Also shown in Figure 1 are four edging strips 2 that sit on and over the perimeter of the board 1. The underside, Figure 2, of each edging strip 2 has an abrasive coating 3, consisting of waterproof adhesive into which is broadcast fine aggregate (as described above).
Figure 2 shows an edging strip 2 inverted showing the abrasive coating 3 of fine aggregate (as described above).
Figure 3 shows a cross sectional detail showing the edging strips 2 sitting on and over the edge of the board 1, including a spring clip 4 in position.
Figure 4 shows a raised view of the board 1, with the edging strips 2 held in place at specific points (see 5) by spring clips. Where two edging strips meet at each corner 5, one spring clip 4 is positioned over the two meeting edging strips.
Important note: the paper when dry must be 5mm smaller than the board all round to allow for expansion, especially on large size papers (22ins x 3Oins).
