Abstract

A shaping tool comprises a tubular cutter (1) and a plunger (2, 3) having an external shape corresponding to an internal shape of the cutter and having a flat end surface for pressing against a plug of material held by the cutter (1) and for applying a decorative design to the plug of mouldable material. At least one of the cutter (1) and the plunger (2, 3) is provided with means, such as bosses (14-17), for arresting relative motion between the plunger and the cutter in an embossing mode and allowing such relative motion in a cutting mode.

Description

SHAPING TOOL
1]This invention relates to a shaping tool for creating a moulded article. In particular the shaping tool is intended for use by cake decorators, confectioners, pastry chefs, potters and others wishing to mould artistic articles in soft mouldable materials such as sugar paste, marzipan, bread dough, chocolate, clay and other deformable plastic materials which may or may not be hardenable with or without the application of heat.
2]GB-A-2319494 describes a sugar craft shaping tool comprising a tubular cutter for cutting out shaped piugs from a sheet of sugar paste or the like mouldable material and a plunger for expelling the shaped plugs from the cutter.
The plunger has a flat end surface for pressing against the plug of material held by the cutter and for applying a decorative design to the plug of mouldable material.
3] It is an aim of the invention to provide a shaping tool that can be selectively operated in a cutting mode and an embossing mode.
4] The invention provides a shaping tool comprising a tubular cutter and a plunger having an external shape corresponding to an internal shape of the cutter and having a flat end surface for pressing against a plug of material held by the cutter and for applying a decorative design to the plug of mouldable material, at least one of the cutter and the plunger being provided with means for arresting relative motion between the plunger and the cutter in an embossing mode and allowing such relative motion in a cutting mode.
5] In the decoration of a cake, the embossing mode can be used to emboss a design directly into the top or side of a cake that has been previously covered with sugar paste, whereas the cutting mode can be used for both cutting and embossing a plug of material for subsequent application to a cake.
6] The arresting means may comprise protrusions extending from mutually opposed surfaces of the cutter and the plunger, which protrusions are arranged to interfere only when the cutter and the plunger are at one or more given relative angular positions. At least one of said protrusions may be arranged to fit inside at least one other of said protrusions when the cutter and the plunger are at a different given relative angular position.
7] If the arresting means is arranged to arrest the motion of the plunger with the flat end surface inside the cutting edge of the cutter then the embossed pattern will include an outline created by the cutting edge.
8] The tool may be provided with interengaging features on the cutter and plunger for preventing relative motion therebetween in a direction opposite to the direction of motion arrested by the arresting means. The interengaging features may comprise a peg on the plunger slidable in at least one recess in the cutter.
9] Biasing means such as a helical spring may be provided for biasing the plunger to an extended position.
0] An embodiment of the invention includes additional interchangeable plungers each with a different design on its flat end face.
[001 1]The invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: [0012]Figures 1 to 3 are cross-sections of a shaping tool according to the invention in different configurations; [001 3] Figure 4 is an e:id view of the tool of Figures 1 to 3 showing the flat end surface of the plunger; and [001 4]Figure 5 is a plan view of the shaping tool.
5]The drawings show a shaping tool comprising a cutter 1 and a plunger formed from an embossing pad 2 and a pushbutton 3. The cutter 1 has a tubular portion 4 of a predetermined cross-section extending forwardly from a slightly domed planar part 5. The outer surface of the tubular portion 4 is tapered inwardly and downwardly (as viewed in Figures 1, 2 and 3) to provide the cutter with a cutting edge 6 at its free end and to facilitate withdrawal of the tool from mouldable material.
(0016] The embossing pad 2 is formed with recesses and/or projections, for example as shown in Figure 4, to create a design when pressed into mouldable material.
7] The pushbutton 3 extends through a cylindrical shaft 7 of the cutter into a cylindrical part 8 of the embossing pad 2, which part 8 in turn extends through an aperture of the cutter 1. Thus the plunger is captive but slidable (in the positions shown in Figures 1 and 2) with respect to the cutter. A helical spring 9 is arranged around the stem of the pushbutton 3 in the shaft 7, abutting shoulders 10 of the pushbutton so as to bias either the pushbutton 3 or the embossing pad 2 in an outward direction.
8] An upper part of the pushbutton 3 is formed with a peg 11 at one side and the shdft 7 is formed with first and second recesses 12, 13 at diametrically opposed locations. The first recess 12 extends further down than the second recess 13.
9] The internal underside of the cutter 1 is provided with first and second hollow cylindrical cutter bosses 14, 15 of different diameters. The internal diameter of the first cutter boss 14 is greater than the external diameter of the second cutter boss 15. The upper surface of the embossing pad 2 is provided with first and second hollow cylindrical pad bosses 16, 17, corresponding in size to the respective cutter bosses.
0]Figure 1 shows the moulding tool in the "unlocked" cutting position in which the peg 11 is aligned with the first recess 12. The second cutter boss 15 is located inside the first pad boss 16 and the second pad boss 17 is located inside the first cutter boss 14. Tthe spring 9 has forced the pushbutton 3 upwards. In this position the tool can be pressed into mouldab e material so that the cutting edge 6 cuts a plug of material. Subsequently, the pushbutton 3 can be depressed forwards so that the embossing pad 2 contacts the cut plug of material and embosses a design thereon.
1]After the cutting and embossing operation has been completed, the pushbutton 3 can be pressed fully forwards, to the position shown in Figure 2, to eject the cut and embossed plug of material beyond the cutting edge 6.
2] Figure 3 shows the tool in the "locked" embossing position. The peg 11 is located in the second recess 13. The first cutter boss 14 is aligned with the first pad boss 16 and the second cutter boss 15 is aligned with the second pad boss 17.
The plunger cannot slide within the cutter, downward movement being prevented by contact between the peg 11 and the bottom of the second recess 13, and upward movement being prevented by the interference of the cutter and pad bosses 14 to 17. In this position the tool is used to emboss designs in a layer or mass of mouldable material. As the embossing pad 2 is located slightly above the cutting edge 6, an impression of the latter will be included in the embossed design. It will be appreciated that by adjusting the relative heights of the tubular part 4 and the bosses 14 to 17 this impression could be omitted.
3]The tool is converted from the locked to the unlocked position and vice versa by removing the embossing pad 2 from the pushbutton 3, rotating both through 1800 and then reassembling them. As shown in Figure 5, the end of the pushbutton bears an arrow and the upper surface of the planar part 5 bears the words "LOCK" and "UNLOCK" to assist in aligning the plunger correctly. To ensure this, the stem of the pushbutton 3 and the cylindrical part 8 of the embossing pad 2 are formed with interengaging parts (not shown) so that they are always fitted together at the same relative angular position.
4] All forms of the verb "to comprise" used in this specification should be understood as forms of the verbs "to consist of" and/or "to include".
