Abstract
A clip for shortening the length of a garment portion, comprises first and second means 4, 12 for retaining fabric, joined by a connector 16. The clip is preferably removable and has the effect of gathering the fabric up and so shortening the portion of the garment. The garment portion is typically the rear of the base of a trouser leg. The retaining means 4 may be a pin and means 12 may be a crocodile grip. The connector may have a decorative facing 18.
Description
1 2422768 The present invention relates to the field of clips suitable for
shortening the length of a garment portion. A preferred embodiment relates to a removable clip suitable for hitching up the fabric at the base of trouser legs.
There are occasions when people wish to wear garments which are inconveniently long. For example, they may wish to wear a garment which was designed for a person of larger size, or which is large for reasons of fashion. Tailors temporarily shorten garments, such as trouser legs, using single pins. However, pins of this type can readily come out, or be dangerous.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a clip for shortening the length of a garment portion, wherein the clip comprises first and second means for retaining fabric, joined by a connector.
In use, the first and second fabric retaining means are attached to two spaced apart regions of the garment portion. The connector limits the distance between the two retained regions of the garment and so, provided that the retained regions of the garment were sufficiently far apart before they were clipped, the connector has the effect of gathering the fabric up and so shortening the portion of the garment.
The garment portion may be a trouser leg. More preferably, the garment portion is the rear of the base of a trouser leg. The clip allows a trouser leg to be raised to prevent it trailing on the ground or interfering with walking. The clip might also be used to shorten a sleeve of a jacket, shirt or other garment portion. The clip is preferably suitable for wearing on the outside of a garment. This clip is preferably removable.
The first and second fabric retaining means may each comprise grips, such as a pin, a resilient (or spring-loaded) clip, such as a crocodile clip, or a removable fabric grip. In a preferred embodiment, the first fabric retaining means comprises a pin and the second fabric retaining means comprises a resilient grip.
Where the first or second fabric retaining means comprise a pin, the fabric retaining means preferably further comprises a cover which engages with the pin in use, retaining fabric. The pin may comprise a sharp protrusion for piercing fabric, and the cover may function to prevent the sharp protrusion from irritating the wearer of a garment. The cover may correspond to covers
known in the field of earrings.
The connector may be any type of structure suitable for connecting the first and second fabric retaining means. The connector might be rigid, flexible or resilient. The first and second fabric retaining means are preferably connected to opposite ends of the connector. The connector may be elongate.
Preferably, the size and shape of the clip are such that the portions of fabric retained by the first and second fabric retaining means are retained 5 to 12cm apart in use. More preferably, this distance is 6 to 9cm apart. The distance has the benefits of being convenient to use, particularly with trouser legs.
The connector may comprise a first face which faces away from the garment in use. Preferably, the first face has some decorative device thereon. In a preferred embodiment, the clip is configured so that the first and second fabric retaining means can each retain fabric whilst the first face faces away from the garment such as a picture or a relief moulding. The connector may comprise a bottle opener, a light, or other tool which a person might wish to carry with them.
Either or both of the first and second fabric retaining means may be flexibly joined to the connector, to make the clip convenient to use. The joint is preferably not so flexible that the fabric moves substantially in use.
In a preferred embodiment, either or preferably both of the fabric retaining means include a formation suitable for attaching the fabric retaining means to the connector (for example, a loop).
The connector may have a corresponding formation (for example, a loop) which mates with or can be attached to the formation on the fabric retaining means. Either or both fabric retaining means might include a ring, allowing them to be joined to the connector by a hoop or other connecting portion.
This construction has the important implication that the connector could conveniently be selected from a group comprising a plurality of connectors. Each connector might have a different decorative device or tool. Similarly, the first and/or second fabric retaining means could be selected from a group comprising a plurality of fabric retaining means. This modular construction allow the economic manufacture of a range of removable clips.
Thus, according to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method for assembling a removable clip for shortening the length of a garment portion, comprising the steps of selecting a connector from a group of connectors and then attaching first means for retaining fabric thereto. The connector might comprise a second means for retaining fabric; alternatively, the method further comprises the step of attaching second means for retaining fabric to the connector, so as to form the removable clip. Preferred features correspond to the first aspect of the invention.
This method of construction allows the economic preparation of a range of removable clips suitable for shortening the fabric of a garment portion.
An example embodiment of the invention will now be illustrated with reference to the following figures: Figure 1 is a plan of a removable clip; and Figure 2 is a cross-section through a removable clip attached to the fabric of a garment portion.
A removable clip shown generally as 1 is shown in plan view in figure 1. The removable clip 1 is also shown in cross-section in figure 2, attached to the fabric 2 of a trouser leg.
The removable clip comprises a pin 4 functioning as first means for retaining fabric. The pin 4 includes a pointed protrusion 6 which penetrates the fabric 2 in use. A cover 8 is provided to retain the pin 4 in place and prevent the protrusion 6 from irritating a wearer of the garment. The pin further includes a loop 10. The removable clip also comprises a sprung crocodile clip 12 including a loop 14. The sprung crocodile clip functions as second means for retaining fabric.
Connector 16 has a first face 18 which has a decorative design and faces away from the fabric in use. In this example, the connector is a metal or plastic casting. The connector has loops 20 at either end. Rings 22 connect the connect loops 20 to the loops 10 and 14 on the pin and crocodile clip respectively.
In use, the pin is inserted through trouser leg fabric 2. The fabric is hitched up and retained lower down the trouser leg by the crocodile clip 12. The distance between the place where the pin passes through the fabric and the place where the crocodile clip grips the fabric is typically 6 to 9cm.
The trouser leg is thereby raised up, preventing it from dragging on the floor or making it difficult for a wearer to walk.
The removable clip is manufactured from separate pin 4, crocodile clip 12 and connector 16 portions. This modular construction allow the economic manufacture of removable clips having different connector portions, as the same pin 4 and crocodile clip 12 can be used with each of several different connectors 16.
