Description

A LUMINAIRE MOUNTING DEVICE
The present invention relates to a luminaire mounting device. In particular, the present invention relates to a mounting device for secure removable attachment of a luminaire to a bed, for example, a bunk bed.
The known means for attachment of a luminaire to a bed fall into two categories. The first category relates to removable attachment devices, typically Bulldog' type clips or screw clamps. The second category relates to permanent attachments, for example brackets attached to a bed using mechanical fasteners. The attachment means provided in both of these categories are unsatisfactory. Bulldog' type clips are held on to a part of a bed by the strength of the spring forcing the jaws of the clip together. This spring is only relatively weak in order to allow a person to open the jaws to attach the clip. Screw clamps are held on to a part of a bed by two jaws which are forced together by turning a threaded screw. As the threaded screw is tightened by hand it is not possible to impart a clamping force that is sufficient to securely hold the screw clamp in place.
Consequently, it is easy to accidentally dislodge luminaires attached using such a clip or clamp, for example by knocking them with a limb. This creates a significant fire risk because if the luminaire becomes unattached then it may fall on to the bed clothes setting them alight. This problem can be overcome by using the permanent fixings of the second category. However, use of permanent fixings is often not desirable either because the mechanical fixings will damage the bed, or the mechanical fixings cannot easily be attached to the bed or because once fixed to the bed the luminaire cannot be moved without damaging the bed. There is therefore a requirement for a luminaire mounting device that can be securely, but removably attached to a part of a bed.
According to a first aspect the present invention provides a luminaire mounting device for attaching a luminaire to a part of a bed, the device comprising attachment means for secure removable attachment of a luminaire attachment plate to a part of the bed, wherein the attachment means is arranged to wrap fully around the part of the bed. By providing an attachment means that fully wraps around the part of the bed the device is removable but is more difficult to dislodge by accident Preferably, the attachment means comprises at least one strap that is attached at at least one point to the luminaire mounting device.
Preferably, the strap is helical.
Preferably, the strap is a resilient material. For example, the strap may be made from a plastics material or a metal.
In a further embodiment, the strap may have a free end and the device further comprises means to secure the free end of the strap. The means to secure the strap may be any suitable form of fastener, for example a buckle.
In one embodiment, a luminaire may be permanently attached to the attachment plate.
Alternatively, the attachment plate may be arranged to detachably receive a luminaire.
Preferably, the attachment means is provided on its internal surface with one or more friction enhancing pads.
Preferably, the attachment plate is configured to allow rotatable movement of the luminaire relative to the attachment means.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a combination of a bed and a luminaire mounting device according to any preceding claim.
Preferably, the bed has a strut, and wherein the attachment means is configured to wrap around the strut.
Preferably, the bed comprises a pair of parallel struts, and wherein the attachment means is configured to wrap around the pair of parallel struts.
According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided an illumination device comprising a luminaire and a luminaire mounting device.
Preferably the illumination device is provided with a 240V AC supply.
Two embodiments of the present invention will be described below with reference to the following figures: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mounting shoe and attachment means for a first embodiment of the luminaire mounting device of the present invention; Figure 2 is a rear perspective view of the second embodiment of the luminaire mounting device of the present invention when mounted to the rails of a bunk bed; Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the front of the attachment plate, the attachment means and the mounting plate (in a first position) of the luminaire mounting device of the second embodiment of the present invention; Figure 4 is a perspective view showing the front of the attachment plate, the attachment means and the mounting plate (in a second position) of the luminaire mounting device of the second embodiment of the present invention; Figure 5 is a perspective view showing the back of the attachment plate and the attachment means for a second embodiment of the luminaire mounting device of the present invention; and Figure 6 shows a schematic view of a luminaire according to the present invention.
A first embodiment of the present invention is shown in Figure 1. The luminaire mounting device 1 comprises an attachment means in the form of a resilient plastics helical strap 3. The strap 3 is wrapped around a tubular member, typically an upright strut of a bunk bed. Provided on the inside surface, i.e. the surface that is adjacent to the strut when the strap 3 is in position on the bed, of the strap 3 are one or more pads to increase the frictional resistance between the strap 3 and the strut and hence to increase the force that must be applied to the luminaire mounting device 1 in order to slide it relative to the strut.
Attached to the strap 3 is a mounting plate 5 comprising a shoe 7. A luminaire, not shown (see Figure 6), may be removably attached to the mounting plate 5 by engaging a foot provided on the luminaire with the shoe 7.
The shoe 7 and the foot may further comprise locking elements for secure attachment of the luminaire to the mounting plate 5.
The strap 3 is mounted on to, for example, an upright strut of a bed by first locating the luminaire mounting device 1 so that its axis, shown by line X-X in Figure 1, is at approximately 45 degrees to the axis of the strut, e.g. along line Y-Y in Figure 1. The luminaire mounting device 1 is then pushed towards the strut and in doing so the lumiriaire mounting device 1 moves through approximately 45 degrees to wrap around the strut.
A second embodiment of the present invention is shown in Figures 2 to 5. Figure 2 shows the luminaire mounting device 101 attached to the horizontal bars of a bunk bed.
The luminaire mounting device 101 comprises an attachment plate 103 having an "L" shaped cross-sectional profile. The attachment plate 103 has a first rectangular plate 105, corresponding to the long arm of the ILIT, and a second, perpendicular, rectangular plate 107, corresponding to the short arm of the TL".
The rectangular plate 105 is slightly greater in length than the distance between the upper surface of a first bar and the lower surface of a second bar, the first and second bars being provided on the side of a bunk bed, so that when the luminajre attachment device 101 is located on the bunk bed the plate 105 contacts both the upper and lower bars. At the free edge of the plate 105, i.e. opposite the edge to which plate 107 is attached, the plate 105 is provided with a gripping portion 108 which contacts the lower bar of the bunk bed.
The second rectangular plate 107 is joined along the top edge of the plate 105 and extends outwardly from each side of the plate 105. Attached to each end of the plate 107 are two elongate rectangular spring clips 109. The width of the plate 107 is slightly greater than the diameter of the bars of the bunk bed so that the bars may pass between the adjacent surfaces of the spring clips 109 and the plate 105.
The spring clips 109 are slightly longer than the distance between the upper surface of a first bar and the lower surface of a second bar of a bunk bed so that when in place the luminaire mounting device 101 is secured at its top and bottom edges to the bunk bed bars. The spring clips 109 have a first part that is parallel to the plate 105 and a second part that is bent towards the plate 105 so that at the free end of the clips 109 the distance between the adjacent surfaces of the clips 109 and the gripping portion 108 of the plate 105 is slightly less than the diameter of the bunk bed bars so that when the luminaire mounting device 101 is located over the bunk bed bars there is a force applied by the spring clips 109 to the lower bar in order to secure the luminaire mounting device 101 in place.
Each of the spring clips 109 is provided with a further spring clip ill which in a rest position provides a gap between itself and the plate 105 that is smaller than the diameter of the bunk bed bars so that when the luminaire mounting device 101 is located over the bunk bed bars there is a force applied by the spring clips 111 to the upper bar in order to secure the luminaire mounting device 101 in place.
The luminaire mounting device also comprises two flexible straps 113 for further securing the luminaire mounting device 101 to the bunk bed bars. Each strap 113 is attached at one of its ends to the top surface of the plate 107 so that, when not in use, it hangs down opposite and parallel to the one of the brackets 109, substantially in the same plane as plate 105. To secure the luminaire mounting device 101 to the bunk bed bars each strap 113 is passed through a first aperture 115 provided in each bracket 109 and then through a second aperture 117 in each bracket 109 to secure each strap 113 against each bracket 109.
Attached to the centre of the plate 105 is a rotatable mounting plate 119, for attachment of a luminaire, not shown, to the luminaire mounting device 101. On the side of the mounting plate 119 that is not adjacent to the bunk bed bars the mounting plate 119 is provided with a shoe 121 for mounting a luminaire. On the opposite side the mounting plate 119 is provided with a gripping portion 123 to enable the mounting plate 119 to be rotated from one position to another, as can be seen from a comparison of Figures 3 and 4, in order to locate the luminaire in a desired position.
The plate 105 and the mounting plate 119 are provided with engagement means, for example a mechanical device such as a ratchet and a toothed wheel, or a frictional device, so that after rotation of the mounting plate 119 it will remain in the position in which it has been placed. Further adjustment of the direction in which light is emitted from the luminaire is facilitated by the provision of a flexible stem between the base of the luminaire and its head.
The shoe 121, best shown in Figure 4, is provided with a central engagement region 125 having a rectangular cross- section, two side engagement regions 127 and an end engagement region 129. The luminaire, shown schematically in Figure 6, is provided with a foot having complementary engagement regions so that when the foot of the luminaire is engaged with the shoe 121 the engagement regions snap together to securely fix the luminaire to the mounting plate 119. In order to disengage the luminaire from the mounting plate a mechanism is provided to release the engagement regions of the luminaire from those of the mounting plate 119. The luminaire may be powered by an AC electrical supply, typically a 240V AC supply.
It will be appreciated that the present invention provides a means for attachment of a luminaire to a bunk bed that has a much improved functionality over the prior art.
The skilled reader will appreciate that a number of the modifications or variations to the precise details described herein may be made without departing from the scope of the claims.
