Abstract

A compact disc/DVD holder comprises a body 2 having a supporting base 6 and a stepped upper region 10 of annular configuration with a hemispherical projection 12 extending upwardly therefrom. The dimensions of the annular stepped upper region 10 and the hemispherical projection 12 are chosen in order to facilitate, in use, the support of a compact disc/DVD without contact between the compact disc/DVD holder and the recorded surface of the compact disc/DVD. A hemispherical recess 14 formed in the underside of the body 2 so that, in use, a first compact disc/DVD holder can be located on top of a second compact disc/DVD holder to form a stack of holders and discs. The body 2 may be made from opaque materials such as plaster or rubber; the body 2 may also be made out of opaque or translucent plastic materials such as polyacrylate or polycarbonate. The body 2 may be shaped like an animal, a car, a flying saucer or an acorn.

Description

IMPROVED COMPACT DISC/ DVD HOLDER This invention is concerned with
improvements in or relating to a compact disc/DVD holder for supporting one or more compact discs/DVDs used with a computer, DVD player/recorder or music station.
Compact dlscs/DVDs are used extensively for pleasure and for business and while in use ills conventional practice that the user will return each disc to its sleeve or holder in order to protect the surfaces thereof against damage.
However, it is often necessary for a disc to be utilised several times during a single working period. This would require the operative to remove the disc from its sleeve or holder and then to replace the disc after each usage.
Each separate insertion and removal of a disc to and from its sleeve or holder increases the possibility that incidental damage will be caused to the recorded surface thereof.
If the disc is not replaced in its sleeve or holder and is laid down upon on a work surface or desktop instead, the incidence of damage to the recorded surface thereof will he increased; in addition, there may be damage caused by handling contact with the recorded surface.
Another disadvantage of placing discs on a work surface or desktop is the need to keep each disc separate from the others to avoid mutual damage one to another.
Laying discs out on a work surface or desktop takes up valuable space.
It is therefore one of the objects of the present invention to provide an improved compact disc/DVD holder that overcomes or at least mitigates the disadvantages met hitherto.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide an improved compact disc/DVD holder that in use maximises the available work surface or desktop.
The present invention thus provides a compact disc/DVD holder comprising a body having a supporting base and a stepped upper region having a hemispherical projection extending upwardly therefrom, the stepped upper region and hemispherical projection facilitating, in use, the support of a compact discIDVD without contact between the compact disc/DVD holder and the recorded surface of the compact disc/DVD.
Preferably, the stepped upper region may be of annular configuration.
Conveniently, the compact disc/DVD holder also comprises a hemispherical recess formed in an underside thereof wherein, when a first disc holder is in use, a second disc holder may be located on top of the first disc holder with the hemispherical projection of the first disc holder being accommodated in the hemispherical recess of the second disc holder.
Preferred embodiments of the compact disc/DVD holder may be in the form of: a) an object such as a car, a flying saucer or an acorn; or, b) an animal such as an elephant, a tortoise, a cow or a dog; or, c) an inanimate object of any aesthetically pleasing shape and configuration.
Conveniently, the body of the compact disc/DVD holder may be made from a rigid and/or semi-rigid material, for example plaster and/or plastic materials. Viz. rubber, or opaque polyacylate or polycarbonate.
There now follows, by way of example of the present invention, a detailed description, which is to be read with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is an upper perspective view of a compact disc/DVD holder; Figure 2 is a plan view of the compact disc/DVD holder shown in Figure 1, Figure 3 is a side view of the compact disc/DVD holder of Figures 1 and 2, Figure 4 is an upper perspective of an alternative compact disc/IJVD holder to that of Figure 1, Figure 5 is a plan view of the compact disc/DVD holder of Figure 4, Figure 6 is a view in the direction of the arrow VI in Figure 4, and, Figure 7 is a side view of three compact disc/DVD holders of Figure 1 arranged one above the other The compact disc/DVD holder I provided by the present invention comprises a unitary body 2 of rigid and/or semi-rigid material, for example plaster and/or plastic materials, viz rubber, polyacrylate and polycarbonates, etc Thus, the compact disc/DVD holders may be made from opaque or translucent materials In addition, the body 2 may be configured a) as an object, for example a car as shown in Figures 4, 5, and 6, a flying saucer or an acorn, or, b) as an animal, for example an elephant, a tortoise, a cow or a dog, or, c) as an inanimate object of any aesthetically pleasing and utile appearance The body 2 shown in the accompanying drawings is that of a starfish 4 having a base 6 for locating the compact disc/DVD holder 2 on a work surface 8, see particularly Figure 3, an annular stepped upper region 10 and a hemispherical projection 12 extending upwardly from the annular stepped upper region 10 The dimensions of the annular stepped upper region 10 and the hemispherical projection 12 are chosen so that a compact disc/DVD, as shown in chain dot lines in Figures 1, 3, 4, 6 and 7, may be located as shown on the holder I without any contact between the holder 1 and the recorded surface of the compact disc/DVD.
The body portion 2 also comprises a hemispherical recess 14 formed in the underside 16 of the base 6, the recess 14 facilitating, in use, the location of one compact disc/DVD holder 1 upon another as shown in Figure 7.
From the forgoing, it will be apparent that the novel compact disc/DVD holder I may be utilised to affect in that the recorded surface of a compact disc/DVD located on the holder 1 is much less likely to suffer incidental damage compared with the prior practices of continuously replacing the disc in its sleeve or holder or simply laying the disc on a work surface.
