Abstract

A self illuminating coaster comprises a motion sensor 3 that activates a light source 1 for a predetermined length of time when someone passes by or moves towards the coaster. The light acts as a guide to allow users to pick up a drink or other item that has been placed on the coaster in the dark. The coaster may have a light sensor 7 that allows the unit only to work in the dark and powered by a battery 5.

Description

SELF ILLUMINATING COASTER
Background
This invention relates to a portable illuminating coaster. Coaster mats are well known to the public and can be used for different uses. The only problem with conventional coaster mats is they are difficult to see to position your tea cup or beaker upon them once there is no light in the room. This could cause you to spill your drink onto a surface, on yourself or anyone else.
Statement of invention
To overcome this problem the present invention proposes a portable coaster mat which has a light sensor which then operates a motion sensor which will operate a light which is powered by a battery source.
Advantages During the night if you want to pick up or put down a drink from your bedside cabinet you can either fumble around in the dark or turn on a light which in turn may wake up your partner or anyone else in the room. Similarly if you want to get up and go to the toilet or to check on children in another room. This invention will help to minimise the noise level caused by fumbling around in the dark.
Partially sighted people can find there asthma inhaler phone or any other similar object when they position them near or on the coaster mat in dark conditions, without the need to turn on a normal type of light.
Another advantage with this invention is that you can attach it to any surface by a fastening means, which will give the coaster mat a greater advantage of portability.
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawing.
Description
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic upper perspective view of the invention.
The unit will take its source of power from either a single dry cell battery, or a multiple of dry cell batteries 5. The battery/s will fit within the unit via the base 9 no external power supply shall be required.
During the day or while it is surrounded by artificial light the unit will remain in standby mode.
When it is darkness the light sensor 7 will work in conjunction with the motion sensor 3 to operate the light 1 when someone either passes by it or moves towards it. The light is connected to the circuit board 6 via the wiring 4. Once the light is activated it will shine through the surface of the unit 8 for a predetermined time. Fig 2 shows the outer casing of the unit which is not transparent. The unit may take on different appearances depending upon the use.
