Abstract

A retractable landing net includes two net guides 5 which support the net and which are hinged, with spigot lugs 13, to a sleeve 2 which is able to slide along a handle/pole 1. In use the sleeve is fully engaged and held in position by a locking button (11). This means that the guides are fully splayed by the spreader bar 6 and the net support cord (15) is fully tensioned. To retract the net, the button is depressed releasing the sliding sleeve and allowing it to slide back along the length of the handle. This allows the net guides to fold parallel to the handle.

Description

RETRACTABLE FISH LANDING NET Fish Landing Net This invention relates to a fish landing net used by anglers. When fishing, once a large fish is hooked and manoeuvred towards the bankside, the angler draws the fish into an appropriately sized net and then lifts the fish from the water safely on to the bank to be unhooked. Such nets are well known but suffer from the disadvantage of being difficult and cumbersome to erect and dismantle. The object of this invention is to provide a landing net that can be transported easily by the angler, erected and retracted with ease, to enable a captured fish to be lifted safely to the bank and the net and pole to be transported easily, ready for use. Accordingly, this invention provides a net that slides along the handle/pole and when not in use the arms of the pole lay parallel to the handle/pole. To erect the net the guide is pushed to the end of the handle/pole and locked into position for use by means of a push button. To retract the net the button is depressed to release the guide and allow it to slide back down the length of the handle/pole until the arms of the net are folded parallel to the handle/pole. The sliding mechanism and associated housings may be made from stainless steel/and/or alloy/and/or plastic or a combination of these materials. Examples of the landing net made in accordance with the accompanying drawings are described in which : Figure 1. shows an isometric view of the net and pole complete. Figure 2. shows the net referred to in Fig. 1. in plan view. Figure 3. shows a section through the button release/locking mechanism of the net referred to in Fig. 1. The fish landing net shown in Figure 1. Has a handle/pole. A sliding sleeve 2 with a diameter slightly larger than the handle/pole travels along the pole and engages a locking button 11 positioned a short distance from the end of the pole by means of an aperture in the sleeve 2. As the sleeve nears the locking button 11 the spreader bar 6 forces the net arms 5 apart. The sleeve is guided over the button by a retaining button locating guide 14 until the button locks in the retaining button aperture 10. Fig 3. Shows the button 11 sprung by means of a leaf spring 12 of known design. The arms are attached to the sleeve on equally spaced hinged spigot lugs 13, one to each side of the sleeve, by means of a hinged spigot 4 and a socket cap countersunk bolt 3. Once locked in position by the locking button 11 the net arms 5 are fully splayed and the net 7 is tensioned. The net 7 hangs from the arms 5 which are attached to the sliding sleeve 2 by means of a hinged spigot 4. A cord 15 or similar material extends between the ferruled net guides 9 such that when the mechanism is locked in position the front edge of the net is tensioned. The net 7 is retained in position by the net retaining clip 8. Figure 2 shows the complete invention in retracted position. When in this position the net can be carried easily and if landing a fish once the net has been retracted the angler can gather the net and/or arms easily and carry the fish to the bankside safely.
