Abstract
242,106. Kirkland, J. W., (Allgemeine Elektricitõts-Ges.). Dec. 20, 1924. Automatic steering- gear for ships includes two magnetron tubes with fields oppositely excited by the horizontal component of the earth's magnetic field change in the field being utilized for actuating the steering gear to keep the ship on a set course. The tubes are set at equal and adjustable angles to the centre line and may have a cardan suspension. Two magnetron tubes 1, 2 symmetrically placed with respect to H have cathodes 3, 4 heated by a source of current 9 which send out electrons to anodes 5, 6 and close a circuit through relays 10, 11 and sources of current 12, 13. The current in solenoids 7, 8 is adjusted to render the tubes currentless in the position shown. When the; ship deviates, the magnetic field on one tube is weakened and in the other strengthened, and a current flows to energize one of the relays whereby the rudder motor is set in motion. The current may be amplified if desired.
