Abstract
The stick on reflectors are sized to fit standard kerbstones and shaped with an angular profile such that the reflective surfaces stand out from the kerbstone surface. The reflectors are designed to be secured to the kerbstones using a suitable adhesive with the surfaces of the reflectors being protected with a coating of epoxy resin. The whole of the reflector may be formed from retroreflective material.
Description
STICK ON REFLECTOR FOR A KERB
A new innovation to improve road safety.
Stick on reflectors for kerbs are made in polyfibre/vinyl or other suitable material which are edged faced with a retroreflective material.
They are designed to fit the splay surface of different BS 7263 kerb sizes.
They are shaped to have an angular profile which when stuck to the kerb is slightly proud of the its face, giving them a reflective capability defining the road edge in all conditions.
They are a stick on version of reflectors inserted between kerbs as patented under GB 2362411.
It is recommended that they be installed at close spacings on bends and at regular spacings along straight roads.
Figures 1,2&3 show the design of the reflector when placed on BS7263 half batter kerbs.
For half batter kerb the reflector has: A slope of reflecting surface 3Odeg/45deg An area of reflecting surface - 9.50cm2 (one side) They are stuck to the kerb with approved adhesive and the surfaces of the reflector are protected with a coating of epoxy resin.
They can be produced to suit various sizes of kerbs manufactured to BS7263 and with an option of the complete reflector being produced in retroreflective material. This would increase the reflecting area of the reflector on the kerb face.
They are simple to install.and easily replaceable. (2)
They are unaffected by general road use and will continue to show up after road studs go missing, line markings or safety barriers have faded and reflective bollards have been damaged or demolished.
Their value is in defining the road edge complementing other road markings to improve road safety, especially on unlit roads. They are of assistance in defining parking limits, traffic islands and each side of vehicle entrances where kerbs have been installed. They also assist in defining isolated kerbs which have been placed alongside gullies.
They are simple and cost effective as a road safety innovation.
They are unaffected by the accumulation of detritus in carriageway channels which can obscure line markings and road studs. (3)
Claims (4)
1) A stick on reflector to the splay surface of a kerb manufactured to BS 7263 such that an angular profile extends beyond the kerb face, said profile including at least one retroreflective surface.
2) A reflector as claimed in claim 1, wherein the reflector is made of polyfibre/vinyl.
3) A reflector as claimed in claim 1, wherein the whole of the reflector is produced from retroreflective material.
4) A reflector as herein described with reference to and as shown in any accompanying drawings.
