Abstract
A Head Protector is a pre-shaped moulded foam Cup form, intended to fit over an orthopaedic Femoral Head in order to protect its highly polished surface finish. A specific size of Protector is required for each size of Femoral Head to ensure a snug fit. The finished form of the Protector has a totally sealed surface to ensure that under normal use no foam particles are shed. The Protector is a hollow hemispherical shape with a skirt 1 that extends down past the diameter of the Head when fitted. The open-ended skin terminates in a small lip 2, which flares out at ninety degrees to the spherical profile. A ridge or fold 3 is incorporated into the molding along one crest axis. This ridge (or fold) is accentuated at the apex to form a tag 4. Large figures 5 are embossed on one side of the Protector to indicate the size of Femoral Head to which the protector relates.
Description
HEAD PROTECTOR
DESCRIPTION
Within the orthopaedic component manufacturing industry there has always been a need to provide adequate protection for the highly polished surface finish of Femoral Heads. In the past, the problem has been solved in a number of ways, but these have usual contained inherent problems of their own. Packing the product directly into blister packs can still risk marking the head surface due to the relatively hard surface of the material used to manufacture the blister packs. "Stockinette" tubing provides a much softer interface, but there is always a slight risk of material shedding.
A novel approach to this problem is the use of ALVEO PU Foam in a preshaped Cup form that is intended to fit over the Fernoral Head. A specific size of Head Protector is required for each size of Femoral Head to ensure a snug fit. The finished form of the Protector has a totally sealed surface to ensure that under normal use no foam particles are shed.
The essential features of this invention are that it shall be a hollow hemispherical shape with a skirt that extends down past the diameter of the Head to ensure stable fixation when fitted. For ease of production, the open-ended skirt shall terminate in a small lip, which flares out at ninety degrees to the spherical profile. Along the outer crest of the hemisphere a ridge or fold is incorporated into the moulding. This ridge (or fold) is accentuated at the apex to form a tag, thus enabling the Protector to be pinched between index finger and thumb to facilitate removal of the Protector from the Head without touching the Head surface. The size of the Femoral Head, to which the protector relates, is embossed in large figures on one side of the Protector.
Figure 1 shows the Protector in a relative position above a typical Femoral Head prior to fitting. Design of the Protector is such that it is required to stretch a little when fitted, in order to ensure that it grips the Head and does not become detached during packaging or transit. It shows the skirt 1 that extends down past the diameter of the Head. The skirt terminates in a small lip 2. A ridge or fold 3 is incorporated into the molding and this is accentuated at the apex to form a tag 4. The size of the relative Fernoral Head is embossed in large figures 5 on one side of the Protector.
Figure 2 shows the Protector in side view to further illustrate the crest ridge 3, culminating in the finger tag 4 used during removal. Thickness of the finished product is approximately 2mm.
It is intended that the Head Protector shall form an interface between the highly polished surface of the Femoral Head and any form of packaging prior to sterilization, e.g. Peel pouch or blister pack.
The specific foam used for this moulded product is ALVEOLIT TA3000. This is an ALVO P0 FOAM and has been tested and certified for Health Care Applications.
Claims (8)

2. A specific size of Protector, as claimed in Claimi, for each size of Femoral Head.
3. A Protector as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 where the raw foam material is specifically moulded in Cup form to create a totally sealed surface.
4. A ridge or fold incorporated into the moulding along the crest of the cup shape, with the ridge (or fold) accentuated at the apex of the cup to form a tag.
5. Large figures embossed on one side of the Protector to identify the size of Femoral Head to which the protector relates.
6. A Protector as claimed in any preceeding Claim, which is intended to form an interface between the highly polished surface of a Femoral Head and any form of packaging.
7. A Protector as claimed in any preceding Claim, which is made from a specific foam, namely ALVEOLIT TA3000, which is an ALVO P0 FOAM.
8. A Protector, substantially as herein described above and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
