Abstract

To mount an electrical component 1 on a circuit board 2 where a terminal 3 of the component on the side of the component facing the board needs to be connected to a device 6 external to the board, either the component is mounted to overhang an edge of the circuit board as in Fig 3 or the terminal passes through a hole 7 in the circuit board as in Fig 4.

Method For Mounting Electrical Component On Printed Circuit Boards This
invention relates to mounting electronic components on printed circuit boards (PCBs) where one or more connections on the component are external connections, i.e. the need ultimately to be connected somewhere other than the PCB.
This invention relates specifically to the case where the component has been designed to connect all connections direct to the PCB and no particular provision has been made for direct external connection. In this case, all the connections are typically on one face (a common TO-92 transistor, for example). In this case, the state of the art is to mount the component so the external connections connect to the PCB. The PCB then provides a conducting track to a connector component which provides external connection to the ultimate destination.
An object of this invention is to provide a method for mounting the component so that the external connections remain exposed and may be connected to directly.
Accordingly, this invention consists in mounting the component so that it either overhangs the edge of the PCB or to put holes in the PCB in such a manner that the external connections are exposed for connection.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying figures in which: FIGURE 1 shows atypical component intended for PCB mounting.
FIGURE 2 shows a component mounted according to the state of the art.
FIGURE 3 shows a component mounted such that it overhangs the edge of the PCB.
FIGURE 4 shows a component mounted such that holes in the PCB expose connections.
As shown in figure 1, all connections on component I are designed to connect to a PCB and thus are all on one side of the component.
Page 2 As shown in figure 2, component 1 mounts flush to PCB 2 in the manner in which it was intended to be mounted. External connection 3 on component 1 is connected via conducting track 4 to connector component 5. Connector cable 6 then connects to connector component 5 to take the connection to its ultimate destination.
As shown in figure 3, component 2 mounts to PCB 2 so that it overhangs the edge of the PCB thus exposing external connection 3. Connector cable 6 can connect direct to external connection 3 on component 1 thus saving cost and PCB space.
As shown in figure 4, component 2 mounts to PCB 2 so that external connection 3 is exposed via hole 7 in the PCB. Connector cable 6 can connect direct to external connection 3 on component I thus saving cost and PCB space. Page3

Claims (3)

1. A method for providing external connection to a component mounted on a PCB the connection only being accessible from the side of the component facing the PCB; wherein external connection is provided by mounting the component on the PCB so that the component ovethangs the edge of the PCB to expose the external connection.
2. A method for providing external connection to a component mounted on a PCB the connection only being accessible from the side of the component facing the PCB; wherein external connection is provided by mounting the component over a hole in the PCB so that the hole exposes the external connection.
3. A method as claimed in either preceding claim wherein no electrical connection is made from the external connection to the PCB.
