Abstract
241,970. Holzapfel, A. C. July 1, 1924. Coating processes ; paints.-Metal surfaces are protected against acids &c. by applying to the clean surface a first coating comprising rubber, resin, and a pigment that resists acid, and a second coating comprising a cellulose ester varnish or paint. In a preferred method for carrying out the process, the surface is cleaned with hot caustic soda solution, and either dried or coated with turpentine or other volatile hydrocarbon miscible with the following coating, which comprises rubber, cumarone resin, a volatile hydrocarbon such as petroleum ether, a solution of shellac, accaroid, or yacca gum preferably in alcohol, and asbestos fibre, asbestine powder, ground asbestos, or powdered steatite or soapstone. When this coating is dry a cellulose ester varnish with or without added glycerine, titanium oxide and powdered asbestos, soap-stone or asbestine, is applied. If the surface to which the varnish is applied is unavoidably moist, alcohol is brushed thereon immediately before the varnish &c. is applied. Specification 207,616 is referred to.
