Abstract
A sandwich buttering machine comprises a hopper 11 containing butter which is to be deposited via an applicator roller 15 on slices of bread 18a, 18b being carried by a conveyor belt 19. A lifting device 20 brings each slice into contact with the applicator roller. The lifting device 20 is actuated in response to a signal from sensor 25 that senses the arrival of a slice of bread 18a.
Description
Improvements in food preparation This invention relates to food
preparation and more particularly to apparatus for preparing food products.
Machines are known which make sandwiches on a production line. A part of such machines spreads butter on bread slices. Typically, this is done by means of a rotatable roller which transfers a coating of butter to the bread slices as they are carried past on a conveyor belt. A problem with such buttering devices is that they tend to leave a smudge of butter on the crust of the bread slice, caused by its initial engagement with the applicator roller.
The present invention aims to avoid these difficulties and provides apparatus for applying a spreadable material such as butter to an edible substrate such as a slice of bread, comprising an applicator, means for transferring a coating of said material to the applicator, means for bringing the applicator into contact with the substrate for transferring said material from the coating to the substrate, and means for controlling the initial contact between the applicator and substrate.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic illustration of apparatus according to the invention, and Figure 2 shows the apparatus with its lifting device in the engaged position.
In Figure 1, a buttering station 10 in a sandwich making machine is shown.
The buttering station 10 comprises a hopper 11 containing a stock of butter 12, a regulator roller 13, a feeder roller 14 and an applicator roller 15. Butter 12 from the hopper 11 is passed through a nip or gap between the contra- rotating regulator and feeder rollers 13 and 14 to form a coating 16 on the feeder roller, the thickness of which coating is controlled by adjustment of the gap. Butter is picked up from the coating 16 on the feeder roller 14 by the co- rotating applicator roller 15 in known manner. The butter coating 17 on the applicator roller 15 is then transferred to the bread slices 1 8a, 1 8b as they move past on a conveyor belt 19 in the direction of arrow A, again as in known manner.
In prior art machines of this nature, the applicator roller 15 would normally be spaced above the conveyor belt 19 by a distance slightly less than the thickness of the bread slices 1 8a, 1 8b, so that the applicator roller bears down on the bread slices as they pass underneath to ensure a transfer of butter to the bread. It will be appreciated that the initial contact between the bread slices and the applicator roller in an arrangement of this nature will be via the leading edge of the bread slice, ie its crust. The result of this initial contact is that the bread slice tends to pick up a line of butter on the outside of its crust.
This is undesirable, because it makes the sandwich messy both for packaging and ultimately for handling by the consumer.
To overcome this problem, it is proposed to incorporate a lifting device 20 beneath the conveyor belt 19 in the region of the applicator roller 15. The lifting device 20 here is in the form of a pivotally mounted plate 21. An actuator 22 is operable to pivot the plate 21 about axis 23 between engaged and disengaged positions. The actuator 22 is operated by a control 24 in response to signals received from a sensor 25.
In the Figure 1 machine, the spacing of the applicator roller 15 above the conveyor belt 19 is adjusted to allow clearance for the bread slices 1 8a, 1 8b, ie so that without the intervention of the lifting device 20, the bread slices would be able to pass under the applicator roller without any contact. With intervention from the lifting device 20, however, ie with the plate 21 in its engaged position, the bread slices 1 8a, 1 8b are lifted into contact with the applicator roller 15. This is seen in Figure 2.
The timing of the actuation of the lifting device 20 is synchronised with the movement of the conveyor belt 19 and is triggered by the sensor 25, which may for example be in the form of an infrared detector. The aim is to bring the bread slice 1 8a into contact with the applicator roller 15 just after its leading edge, ie its crust, has passed the tangential contact point with the applicator roller. This avoids the crust of the bread slice picking up butter on its leading edge. The lifting device 20 is returned to its disengaged position when the bread slice 1 8a has received its spread of butter, ready to repeat the operation for the next successive slice 1 8b.
