Abstract
There is disclosed a method of extracting ions comprising the steps of: providing a source of ions; entraining said ions in a laminar flow of a carrier gas; providing a barrier region in which an electrical field is applied across the laminar flow of carrier gas, the magnitude and direction of the electrical field being selected so as to prevent at least some of the ions entrained in the laminar flow from passing through the electrical field; and varying the electrical field so as to allow ions of chosen characteristics to pass through the electrical field.
