Abstract

A flexible bath seat comprises a lifting belt 5 that spans the width of the bath that raises and lowers a user within the bath. Preferably one end of the lifting belt 5 is attached to a winch 4 shaft roller mounted adjacent to one side of the bath eg. on the floor adjacent one side of the bath or bath frame besides the bath and the other end is detachably secured to an attachment on the opposing side of the bath eg. on the wall or floor. The winch 4 shaft coils and uncoils the reinforced flexible belt 5 is powered by a battery unit that docks into the housing. An attachment plate 8 is fixed to the end of the lift belt 5 to allow the lift belt to be detachable secured to a lift belt attachment cradles 9 mounted onto a wall-mounted safety rail 10. The raising and lowering for the bath seat may be operated by remote control or via a pendant.

BATH LIFT
This invention relates to a bath lift.
Bath lifts are well known and are generally of two types: a) A portable raising seat that is mounted inside the bath. This can be powered by motorised actuators, springs, pneumatics or hydraulics.
b) A belt-lift that raises and lowers the user. These are currently of three types: 1. Wall-mounted winch mechanism, having a belt which is secured to the floor on the opposite side of the bath.
2. Secured height-adjustable seat platform mounted adjacent one side of the bath, the platform having an integrated powered retractable lift belt, and wherein an attachment is provided..on the opposite side of the bath for securement of the lift belt.
3. Bath mounted double-winch mechanism, having a belt which is wound equally between the two winches from either side of the bath edge.
Type (a) is generally low cost, but does not allow the user to lower to the very bottom of the bath due to the seat and mechanism depth, which is below their bottom.
Type (b 1) does allow the user to lower themselves to the very bottom of the bath, but by being mounted on the wall, it impedes the internal width of the bath. It does not generally incorporate a safety-rail which can be reached comfortably by an arthritic user when at the bottom of the bath.
Type (b2) does allow the user to lower themselves to the very bottom of the bath, and by being mounted outside the bath does not impede the internal width of the bath. It does incorporate a safety-rail which can be reached comfortably by an arthritic user when at the bottom of the bath. However, having a height-adjustable seat as a major feature of the design increases the cost of the product and if the bath is sited next to a sink or toilet, it can prevent the use of the device.
I'ype (b3) does allow the user to lower themselves to the very bottom of the bath, and by being mounted on top of the bath does not impede the internal width of the bath. It does not generally incorporate a safetyrail of any type, thereby leaving the user with normally only the bath edge to reassure them during motion. The device is generally the most expensive of all the aforementioned devices.
The benefits of the invention are: i. A floor-mounted, powered retractable belt-type device that allows the user to sit on to the taut belt, which unwinds, lowering the user into a conventional bath. Retraction of the belt subsequently raises the user for exit from the again taut belt.
ii. Because the belt is slim, the user can get a full normal immersion when in the bath.
iii. The device can be made compact enough to be sited beside the bath, even if a sink or toilet is also sited close to the bath.
iv. The device can be made cost effectively, generally cheaper than types (b2) and (b3).
v. The combined belt attachment and safety-rail gives reassurance for the user during transfer manoeuvres.
According to the present invention there is provided a bath lift specifically adapted for use with a conventional bath, the device comprising a powered retractable belt-type mechanism, and wherein an attachment is provided on the opposite side of the bath for securement of the lift belt.
The bath seat fabrication is preferably from a metal or plastics material with a strong and flexible material for the lift belt.
It is preferable that the lift belt attachment is combined with a wallmounted safety rail to provide reassurance to the user and allow quick engagement and disengagement.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:- ..
Figure I shows in perspective, the device sited beside a conventional bath with the powered belt taut to accept the user: Figure 2 shows in perspective, the user removable parts.
Figure 3 shows a cross-sectional view of the bath seat sited beside a conventional bath showing the lift belt in both a raised 5i and lowered position Sii.
Figure 4 shows in perspective, the combined safety rail and lift belt attachment with the lift belt removed.
Referring to the drawings the device comprises of a chassis 1 which has holes 2 for securing to the floor or bath-frame beside the bath. A winch shaft 4 coils and uncoils a reinforced lift belt 5, travelling over a rotating guide shaft 6 and the edge of the bath side 7. At the opposite end of the lilt belt 5 is securely fitted a lift belt attachment plate 8.
On the wall opposite the bath seat are securely fitted lift belt attachment cradles 9, mounted onto a wall-mounted safety rail 10, allowing the lift belt 5 to be easily and safely fitted and removed without tools when the bath is to be used normally.
A cover 11 is fined over the chassis 1, and is adjacent to a removable electronics and rechargeable battery module 12, which is lifted away from a docking bay 13. The removable electronics and rechargeable battery module 12 has docking sockets to allow electrical connection to the chassis 1, it also has an external charging socket for remote charging of the internal rechargeable battery.
Controlling the raising and lowering of the bath seat is by way of switching polarity of the DC motor 14, which drives the winch shaft 4 via gearing 15. The method of switching the polarity depends on the user preference and disability, but is generally push buttons on a roving pendant 16 or remote control. 3
