Abstract

Clothes are provided that have anatomical drawings on them, such that, when worn by a subject, it accurately depicts the location and position of anatomical features and landmarks which are relevant in medical examination. The clothes show cardiovascular, respiratory, abdominal, neurological, etc. systems. It may be accompanied by a handbook and a pen for making annotations on the clothes. The garments may be made from stretchable material e.g. Lycra (RTM). The drawings may be coloured using standard medical colour schemes.

Description

1 2a532 Descaption Title: The Examination Suit Background: When learning
medical skills such as the examination of cardiovascular, respiratory, abdominal and neurological systems, it is often difficult to visualise and remember the relevant anatomical landmarks and features on the body of the subject.
Referring to a text book for small details can often be time consuming and impractical.
Statement of Invention: The Examination Suit is a teaching/learning/revision aid for medical and other healthcare personnel e.g. nurses, physiotherapists etc. The examination suit encompasses a number of garments that have accurate anatomical drawings and annotations on them. It is an item of clothing that when worn can depict the position of anatomical features and examination landmarks on the body of the person wearing the garment which are relevant when performing examinations and medical procedures.
Advantages: The Examination suit will make the teaching and learning of medical physical examinations and procedures easier and more practical. Preferably the suit would be made out of a figure hugging material so the anatomical features would be depicted more accurately when worn and can compensate for different body types of the subjects wearing the garment. Preferable additional features of the examination suit l include a permanent and non-permanent pen that can be used to further annotate the suit by the user. Also a quick rel'erence handbook can be provided as a guide.
Detailed Description: The Examination Suit designs have illustration for different examinations; Cardiovascular (fig I); Respiratory (fig 2); Abdominal (fig 3); and Neurological (fig 4). The illustrated information from all four suits can be amalgamated into a universal examination suit. The suits will display coded symbols on them to indicated positions l'or palpations, percussion and auscultation, and additional tests for all systems, where relevant, which will be explained in the accompanying handbook. 'I'he Examination suits will have landmarks for procedures such as venepunture and sphygmometry.
The information provided on the suit will be basic and relevant, necessary additional information will be provided in a handbook.
The suits can be made in standard colour schemes to depict the natural anatomy, t'or example, red for arteries, blue for veins, brown l'or muscles etc. Simpler versions may also be monochrome.
The material used to make the Examination Suit should preferably be stretchable e.g. Lycra. The material should also allow annotation with a permanent/non-permanent pen.
Drawings The Examination Suit will now be exemplified using the following illustrations and accompanying captions. 'lithe drawings provided are not intended to be an accurate or to scale depiction of the final product.
Filre 1: The Cardio-vascular System (CVS) is depicted on the front and similarly on the back showing key anatomic features and their relative positions, including the heart, arteries and veins, the liver, the kidneys. The relevant lymphatic architecture may also depicted.
Symbols and letters represent locations for palpation, percussion, auscultation and other CVS tests. The examination landmarks are annotated.
Figure 2: The Respiratory System is depicted on the front and similarly on the back ofthis garment showing the positions of key anatomical features including the lungs with details of the lobes and bronchial tree and blood and lymphatic nodes. Symbols represent locations for palpation, percussion, auscultalion and other respiratory system tests. The examination landmarks are annotated.
Figure 3: The Abdominal System (Gl) is depicted on the front and similarly back of the garment showing the positions of key anatomical features including the liver. kidney, pancreas, spleen? gall bladder, and small and large intestines. 'I'he lymphatic system and blood vessels may also be depicted. Symbols represent locations for palpation, percussion, auscultalion and other abdominal system tests. The examination landmarks are annotated.
Figure 4: The Neurological System is depicted on the front and back of the garments as dermatomes, peripheral nerves, and points nor testing reflexes. This Examination Suit can consist of a top, trousers, gloves and socks. I ig 4.b, shows the peripheral nerves of the lower limbs, which can also be illustrated on to the suit. Symbols represent locations for testing reflexes etc. The examination landmarks are annotated.

Claims (5)

  1. Claims 1. A series of garments that can be worn by a subject to depict the
positions of anatomical features and examination landmarks, on the body of the person wearing the garments, that are relevant in medical physical examinations and practical procedures.
  2. 2. In accordance with Claim 1, the garments are made from a stretchable material e.g. Iycra
  3. 3. In accordance with Claims I and 2; the details on the garments are represented in the standard medical colour scheme i.e. blue lor veins, red for arteries, brown for muscle, yellow for Iymphatics etc.
  4. 4. In accordance with Claims 1-3; additional information and guidance for using the Examination Suit is provided in a handbook.
  5. 5. In accordance with Claims 1; the material of the garment can support annotation using either permanent or non-permanent writing implements.
