Abstract
A strap for tying up and labelling an object or a collection of objects comprises ```a strip (1) of flexible material, ```a labelling region (3) extending along one face of the strip and adapted to be written on, ```an adhesive device (6) attached to the other face of the strip and adjacent to a first end (5) of the strip, and ```means for rendering the adhesive device (6) operable or inoperable as required, which may be a cover sheet of release material. It may be used by ```placing the second end (7) of the strip (1) of flexible material remote from the covered adhesive device (6) on the object or collection of objects so that the labelling region (3) is exposed, ```wrapping the strip (1) of material continuously around the object or the collection of objects so that the object is tied up or the collection of objects are tied up together, ```utilising the uncovered adhesive device (6) to cause the first end (5) of the strip to adhere to the rest of the strip, and ```using an exposed portion of the labelling region (3) to label the object or the collection of objects.
Description
SALWEY 01/04
APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR TYING UP AND LABELLING AN OBJECT OR
A COLLECTION OF OBJECTS
The present invention relates to apparatus and a method for tying up and labelling an object or a collection of objects, for example a container with a lid, or a collection of books or files or clothes.
Various forms of apparatus and methods for tying up and labelling an object or a collection of objects are known and they usually have the disadvantage that they use separate materials for the tying process and the labelling process. Further the label used in the labelling process may remain attached to the object or the collection of objects when the material used for the tying up process is removed.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved apparatus and method for tying up and labelling an object or a collection of objects.
According to the present invention apparatus for tying up and labelling an object or a collection of objects comprises a strip of flexible material, a labelling region extending along one face of the strip and adapted to be written on, an adhesive device attached to the other face of the strip and adjacent to a first end of the strip, and means for rendering the adhesive device operable or inoperable as required.
According to another aspect of the invention a method for tying up and labelling an object or collection of objects using apparatus as above comprises rendering the adhesive device inoperable, placing the second end of the strip of flexible material remote from the adhesive device on the object or the collection of objects so that the labelling region is exposed, SALWEY 01/04 wrapping the strip of flexible material continuously around the object or the collection of objects so that the object is tied up or the objects are tied up together, continuing the wrapping and tying operation until the first end of the strip of flexible material to which to which the adhesive device is attached is positioned adjacent to the rest of the strip, rendering the adhesive device operable, utilising the adhesive device to cause the first end of the strip to adhere to the rest of the strip so that the strip continues to tie up the object or the collection of objects, and using an exposed portion of the labelling region to label the object or the collection of objects.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood an embodiment will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a strip of material forming a tying and labelling apparatus according to the invention, Figure 2 is a plan view of one face of the strip illustrated in Figure 1, Figure 3 is a plan view of the other face of the strip, and Figure 4 is a perspective view of a box with a lid which has been tied up and labelled using apparatus as illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3.
With reference to Figures 1, 2 and 3, the strip of material 1 is formed from a piece of flexible material. Extending along the full length of one face 2 of the strip 1 is a labelling region 3. The region 3 comprises an area of roughened or treated material which can be written upon using a pen or a pencil or other writing instrument. On the other face 4 of the strip 1 and adjacent to a first end 5 of the strip is located an adhesive device 6. The adhesive device 6 can be rendered inoperable or operable as required. The adhesive device 6 can, for example, be a piece of double sided adhesive material. One side of the adhesive device 6 is SALWEY 01/04 attached to the strip 1 and the other side of the adhesive device is normally covered with a piece of material so as prevent it from adhering to any object and thereby rendering the adhesive device inoperable.
While the adhesive device 6 is illustrated as having a rectangular shape with the longer sides extending along the length of the strip 1, the device 6 could alternatively have a rectangular shape with the longer sides extending across the strip or a have a circular or other shape.
With reference to Figure 4, a box 10 has a body portion 11 and a lid 12. In order to use the strip 1 to tie the lid 12 to the body portion 11 and to be able to label the box, first the adhesive device 6 is rendered inoperable by covering the free adhesive surface of the device 6 with a piece of material. Then the end 7 of the strip 1 remote from the adhesive device 6 is placed on the surface of the box with the labelling region 3 facing away from the box and the rest of the strip 1 is wound around the box 10, thereby tying the lid 12 to the body portion 1 1. When all the strip 1 has been wound around the box 10, the adhesive device 6 is rendered operable by removing the covering piece of material and causing the adhesive device 6 to adhere to the nearest part of the strip 1. When this operation has been completed the strip 1 will be held securely in place and will tie the lid 12 securely to the body portion 11 of the box 10. The box can then be labelled by writing as required on any exposed part of the labelling region 3.
The box 10 may alternatively be a collection of objects for example a collection of books.
It will be appreciated that the strip of flexible material 1, with the labelling region 6, can be removed from the object such as the box 10 or the collection of objects by disengaging the strip 1 from the adhesive device 6 and unwrapping the strip 1 of flexible material from the object or the collection of objects. Since the adhesive device 6 is never in direct contact with the object or the collection of objects during the tying up process the adhesive device 6 does not remain in contact with the object or the collection of objects when the strip of flexible material 1 has been removed.
Claims (4)
1. Apparatus for tying up and labelling an object or a collection of objects comprising a strip (1) of flexible material, a labelling region (3) extending along one face of the strip and adapted to be written on, an adhesive device (6) attached to the other face of the strip and adjacent to a first end (5) of the strip, and means for rendering the adhesive device (6) operable or inoperable as required.
2. A method for tying up and labelling an object or a collection of objects using apparatus as claimed in Claim 1 comprising rendering the adhesive device (6) inoperable, placing the second end (7) of the strip (1) of flexible material remote from the adhesive device (6) on the object or collection of objects so that the labelling region (3) is exposed, wrapping the strip (1) of material continuously around the object or the collection of objects so that the object is tied up or the collection of objects are tied up together, continuing the wrapping and tying operation until the first end (5) of the strip (1) to which to which the adhesive device is attached is positioned adjacent to the rest of the strip, rendering the adhesive device (6) operable, utilising the adhesive device (6) to cause the first end (5) of the strip to adhere to the rest of the strip so that the strip continues to tie up the object or the collection of objects, and SALWEY 01/04 using an exposed portion of the labelling region (3) to label the object or the collection of objects.
3 Apparatus for tying up and labelling an object or a collection of objects substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
4. A method for tying up and labelling an object or a collection of objects substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
