Abstract

A label 11 of thermoplastic material is affixed to a plant pot 10, also of thermoplastic material, by spot welding 12,13 the label to the rim 14 of the pot. The welding may be ultrasonic or by application of a heated metal tool. The label 11 may upstand from the pot rim 14.

Description

"PLANT POT LABELLING" This invention relates to a method of labelling
plant pots or like containers and to plant pots labelled by the method.
In many cases a label has a tapered or tongue-like end which is simply pushed into the soil or other growing medium in a plant pot so that its other end bearing information about the plant stands up and is clearly visible. Such labels are easily discarded either accidentally or deliberately. This causes litter, and if it happens within the retail outlet, such as a garden 0 centre, where potted plants are being sold, the bar code or other pricing information needed at the check out is lost.
On the other hand if a label is securely fixed to a plant pot it offers a convenient handle by which to carry it. The bottom of a plant pot, having drainage holes, is usually wet and dirty and if one grasps the rim one's thumb will usually enter the soil.
Various proposals have therefore been made for securing a label to a plant pot. Examples are GB-A-2260308 and GB-A-2151967.
A principal object of the present invention is to improve upon previous proposals by providing a very cheap and simple method of fixing a label to a plant pot.
In accordance with one aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of affixing an information-bearing label comprising a thermoplastic material to a pot or like 2s container for a plant, the container comprising a thermoplastic material, the method comprising bringing together thermoplastic surfaces of the label and of the container and applying heat to weld the surfaces together.
Preferably the welding technique employed is spot welding. The welding technique employed may use ultrasound or heat may be applied by a heated metal tool. >
Preferably a label of thermoplastic material is made to upstand from the rim of a thermoplastic plant pot by welding a lower portion of the label to the side of the pot so that an upper portion of the label projects above the rim.
In accordance with another aspect of the present invention there is provided a plant pot to which a label has been affixed by the method of the three preceding paragraphs.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of non-limitative example with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows a plant pot of lo thermoplastic material to which a label ofthermoplastic material has been affixed.
Referring to the drawing, a plant pot 10 has been moulded from a thermoplastic material such as polypropylene. A label 1 I stamped from a sheet of polypropylene is spot welded at 12 and 13 to the rim 14 of the pot. Spot welding has been effected in a lower region of the label so that an upper region of the label projects upward from the rim 14 well above the soil or other growing medium 15 in the pot. The outward facing side 16 of the label bears information about the plant (not shown) in the pot. This may include a picture, text and/or a bar code.
Spot welding has been effected using an ultrasound gun, but heat may be applied in any desired manner such as by a heated metal tool.
Because the label is so strongly fixed to the pot it can be used as a handle in carrying the pot. It may also be apertured to assist in carrying it or to hang the pot by the label from a 2s hook.

Claims (8)

  1. CLAIMS: 1. A method of affixing an information-bearing label comprising a
    thermoplastic material to a pot or like container for a plant, the container comprising a thermoplastic s material, the method comprising bringing together thermoplastic surfaces of the label and of the container and applying heat to weld the surfaces together.
  2. 2. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the welding technique employed is spot welding.
  3. 3. A method as claimed in claim 2, wherein the welding technique employed uses ultrasound.
  4. 4. A method as claimed in claim I or claim 2, wherein heat is applied by a heated metal tool.
  5. 5. A method as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein a label of thermoplastic material is made to upstand from the rim of a thermoplastic plant pot by welding a lower portion of the label to the side of the pot so that an upper portion of the label projects above the rim.
  6. 6. A method of affixing an information-bearing label to a pot or like container for a plant substantially as hereinbefore described.
