Abstract
A method for verifying the identity of a person including steps of: sensing a fingerprint pattern; producing a digital representation of the sensed fingerprint pattern; comparing the digital representation of the sensed fingerprint pattern to a stored digital representation of a stored fingerprint pattern. The comparison is made using complete digital representations of the sensed and stored fingerprint patterns. The digital representations may be bitmap format.
Description
24 1 8285 Identity Verification The present invention is concerned with a
method for verifying the identity of a person.
It is well known that fingerprint patterns may be used for identity verification and for confirmation. EP 459808, US 3,781,855, US 4,896,363 and EP 699325 are just a few of the documents describing methods and/or apparatus for the verification of identity using fingerprint patterns.
All the known methods of identity verification using fingerprint patterns include the processing of a sensed pattern to produce data characteristic of a small number of identifying characteristics (usually ridge or valley endings in fingerprint patterns - sweat pores in EP 699325).
The inventor of the subject application is the first to appreciate that the hitherto apparently beneficial step of reducing a sensed pattern to a few allegedly identifying characteristics is unnecessary and reduces the security of the identification. The less amount of data extracted from a sensed fingerprint pattern and used to characterize that pattern (and any stored pattern), the less secure the identification will be.
The present invention provides a method as described in claim 1 to which reference should now be made. A preferred feature of the invention is defined in claim 2.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the attached figures in which: Figure 1 illustrates a comparison method embodying the present invention.
Referring to Figure 1, a fingerprint reader is coupled to a data processor including a comparator for a comparing fingerprint pattern sensed by the print reader with a fingerprint pattern stored in a memory. When the sensed and stored patterns match, the comparator generates an acceptance signal indicating that the sensed pattern matches the stored pattern. The acceptance signal may, for example, be used to authorise a financial transaction or open a door by releasing a lock.
The print reader may be of any of the known types of print reader. For example, the print reader or sensor may be as described in EP 459,808 or EP 1 021785 The print reader generates a bit map or digital signal train representing an image of the sensed fingerprint. The memory includes a stored bit or digital signal train representation, or image of a fingerprint pattern corresponding to, for example, an authorised person or user.
The comparator directly compares the bit map produced by the print reader or sensor with the bit map stored in the memory.
Claims (3)
1. A method for verifying the identity of a person including steps of: sensing a fingerprint pattern; producing a digital representation of the sensed fingerprint pattern; comparing the digital representation of the sensed fingerprint pattern to a stored digital representation of a stored fingerprint pattern; and generating a signal when the stored and sensed fingerprint patterns; wherein the comparison is made using complete digital representations of the sensed and stored fingerprint patterns.
2. Method according to claim 2, wherein the digital representations are bitmaps of the sensed and stored fingerprint patterns.
3. Method and/or apparatus as hereinbefore described with reference to the figures.
