Abstract

A device to protect padlocks from damage through which the hasp of the padlock is passed. Protection is achieved by deflection or absorption of impact energy from any impact to the top face of the lock. One embodiment of the device consists of a concave circular plate larger in diameter than the width of the padlock, and having a slot or holes through which the hasp of the padlock is placed before being attached to the chain or item to be secured. The device may comprise corrugations or other shape incorporated to dissipate impact energy. The device may be formed from metal, for example from sheet metal or spring steel. Alternatively, the device may be formed from plastic rubber or such like.

Description

- ] 241 7754 PADLOCK IMPACT PROTECTION DEVICE.
The most popular design of padlock is that in which the hasp is rotated through 180 degrees and slid into the body to lock. This invention relates to this type of padlock.
Padlocks of this type are very susceptible to breakage by impact to the top face whilst the hasp is restrained. A heavy blow from a hammer can easily force the body of the lock from the hasp. This feature is the weakest point of the design, and is often exploited by criminals.
It is the object of the invention to either eliminate, or substantially reduce this vulnerability.
One embodiment of the invention consists of a concave / convex plate with a slot or holes or any combination of slots and holes, through which the hasp of the lock is passed, before the lock is fitted to the chain or item to me secured, and the lock closed shut. The plate is fitted with the convex face uppermost, and the concave face against the lock body.
The invention prevents direct impact on the lock body by presenting a curved surface to any impact, and directing the force away from the lock body.
The plate can also tilt under impact, further deflecting any impact.
The concave plate may be circular, with a diameter greater than the maximum width of the lock, or may be of some other shape to suit individual circumstances.
Corrugations may be formed in the plate to act as shock absorbers and further dissipate energy from any sudden impact. Rubber or polymeric materials may be incorporated to further increase the shock absorption effect. The invention may be constructed from either metallic or non metallic materials or a combination of both
