Abstract

A system for protecting the edges of worktops comprises applying a protective edging strip 1 to at least the front edge 5 of a worktop by a releasable adhesive, delivering and installing the worktop, and finally removing the edging strip. The edging strip 1 is preferably provided with grooves 2, 3 to impart flexibility. They may be provided in only one or both sides of the strip. They may extend across the length and width of the strip or may be limited to edge regions. The edges of the strip may be rounded or tapered.

IMPROVEMENTS IN WORKTOPS
This invention relates to improvements in worktops and is particularly concerned with protecting the edges of worktops during transit and installation.
Worktops are conventionally packaged in wrapping material which usually consists of plastics sheeting. The problem with this is that the sheeting does not provide protection for the edges of worktops. Attempts to solve this problem by the use of cardboard edging strips have not proved to be successful. Further, on arrival at an installation site, the packing material is removed and the cardboard edging strips become detached so that the edges of worktops are vulnerable to damage during installation.
The present invention seeks to provide an effective solution to these problems.
According to the invention, there is provided a method for protecting the edges of worktops during transit and to the point of installation which comprises applying a protective edging strip to at least the front edge of a worktop by means of a releasable adhesive, delivering the worktop to an installation site, preparing the worktop for installation with the protective edging strip in place on the front edge of the worktop and finally removing the protective edging strip from the worktop for final inspection once the worktop is ready to be installed.
Since the protective edging strip is held in place by a releasable adhesive, it can simply be peeled away from the worktop edge when desired. Any vestiges of adhesive remaining on the worktop edge can easily be removed by a suitable solvent or warm water and a mild detergent or simply by rubbing.
The protective edging strip may be applied to the side edges of a worktop as well as the front edge and may also be applied to the rear edge. These strips will be held in place during transit but the strip covering the rear edge and the strips covering the side edges will normally be removed before installation unless one or both sides of the worktop arc to be exposed after installation in which case the protective edging strip(s) on the side edge(s) of the worktop will be retained in place until removed with the front edge protective strip.
The invention also extends to a protective edging strip for use in the method according to the invention.
Preferably, the protective edging strip is made of a very hard impact resistant plastics material such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) but should, at the same time, be flexible. The preferred thickness is 2 to 3 mm.
The protective edging strip preferably has a number of grooves which facilitate bending of the strip.
According to a preferred embodiment, the protective edging strip has a pair of first grooves adjacent to its edges on one side and a pair of second grooves adjacent to its edges on the other side, the second grooves being offset from the first grooves to impart flexibility to the edges of the protective strip and to enable these edges to be bent over the vulnerable edges of the worktop where the edges meet the upper and lower surfaces of the worktop.
According to another embodiment, the protective edging strip has a series of longitudinally extending grooves on one side.
The edges of the strip may be rounded, tapered or conical.
The width of the protective edging strip will normally be chosen to be slightly greater than the width of the worktop for which the strip is intended.
The invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example, with reference to the drawings, in which:
-
Fig. I is a perspective view of one embodiment of an edging strip according to the invention; Fig. 2 is an end elevation showing the strip shown in Fig. I applied to an edge of a worktop; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a second embodiment of an edging strip according to the invention; Fig. 4 is an end elevation showing the strip shown in Fig. 3 applied to an edge of a worktop; and Fig. 5 is an end elevation of a third embodiment of edging strip according to the invention.
In the drawings, like parts are denoted by like reference numerals.
Reference will first be made to Figs. I and 2 of the drawings in which a protective edging strip according to the invention comprises a strip 1 of flexible PVC having a first pair of grooves 2 on one side and a second pair of grooves 3 on its other side. The grooves 3 are deeper and closer to the edges of the strip 1 than the grooves 2. The side of the strip I in which the grooves 2 are formed is desirably provided with rounded edges 4 but this is not essential. This side is intended to face away from the edge of a worktop when the strip is applied.
Fig. 2 shows the strip shown in Fig. 1 applied to an edge 5 of a worktop, the worktop having rounded edges 6 between the surfaces 7 and 8 of the worktop and the edges 5. As can be seen from Fig. 2, the grooves 2 and 3 in the strip 1 enable the edges of the strip to be bent over the rounded edges 6 of the worktop and thus give protection to these vulnerable edges. r
The protective edging strip will normally be supplied in the form of a long roll and cut to a desired length to match the length of a worktop for which it is intended. However, if desired, the strip could be provided in standard lengths to match the standard lengths of worktops.
The protective edging strip I is applied to the edge 5 of the worktop by means of a releasable adhesive.
The protective edging strip shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings is similar to the strip shown in Figs. I and 2 except that the central portion 9 of the strip is wider.
This enables the strip to be applied to an edge 12 of a worktop 11 which has more rounded edges 13 than the rounded edges 6 of the worktop edge 5 shown in Fig. 2.
The strip shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is otherwise similar to the strip shown in Figs. I and 2 and it is applied to the edge 12 of the worktop I I in a similar manner.
The protective edging strip shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings has a planar side 14 which is intended to be applied to an edge of a worktop (not shown). The strip is made of flexible material and its other side is provided with a series of grooves 15.
The grooves 15 extend throughout the length of the strip and across substantially the entire width of the strip except at the edge regions 16 which are tapered or conical. The extreme side edges 17 of the strip are rounded.
The protective edging strip shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings is applied to the edge of a work top by means of a releasable adhesive in a similar manner to the strips shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The strip is made of flexible PVC and the provision of a large number of grooves 15 enables the strip to follow the contours of a wide range of work top edges having different configurations and is therefore very adaptable. The strip preferably has a thickness of 3.5mm +/- 0.25mm and the grooves desirably have a width of 0.5mm.
The preferred width of the strip is 43.2mm +/- lmm and fourteen grooves 15 are provided to give thirteen protection ribs 18 between the edge regions 16.
The invention is not restricted to the above-described embodiments but variations and modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the grooves could be omitted particularly if the protective edging strip is intended for a worktop having straight rather than rounded edges.
