Description

Method for determining phone type of a user who is subscribing to a
service delivered on a mobile phone.
Definitions Short messaging service (SMS): Technology that enables the sending of short text messages to/from and between mobile phones.
Enhanced messaging service (EMS): Enhancement to SMS that enables the addition of simple pictures, sounds and animations. Adopted by many major phone manufacturers Smart messaging/Picture messages (NPM). Enhancement to SMS that enables the addition of simple pictures. Generally proprietary to Nokia.
Subscriber: user with a mobile phone subscribing to a service Service Centre: central computer system receiving subscriptions and delivering content.
Service/Content: information and/or media that a user subscribes to.
Description
A user subscribes to a service (including but not limited to barcodes, pictures, animations, sounds and ringtones) by sending an SMS indicating the service reference they wish to subscribe to a service centre number. .
. :...DTD: Before the service can explicitly send proprietary content (including but not limited to NPM or....
EMS) or transcode generic content to the proprietary format it is necessary to determine the phone type (and therefore implicitly the phone content support).
- em If the subscriber has not registered for this service before the initial registration is replied to with another SMS requesting the phone type of the subscriber. Approach 1.... -
The message may be specially encoded content that cannot be seen on one of the....
phone types with a question to the subscriber if they can see that content. The reply. . . from the subscriber to the service centre will then register the phone type and transmit the requested content.
Approach 2 The message describes the appropriate responses that the service centre requires.
The subscriber replies with the appropriate answer.
The service centre registers the subscribers' phone type and delivers the requested content in the appropriate format.
If a response indicates that the phone type support is ambiguous then the service centre may send an additional message with specially encoded content that cannot been seen on one of the phone types with a question to the subscriber if they can see that content. The reply from the subscriber to the service centre will then register the phone type and transmit the requested content.
Either message may or may not include a reference to terms and conditions constituting an opt-'n of the part of the subscriber. A-. . e eve -.e .e. e .- .- . .. - -
