Abstract

A device 100 for cutting elongate workpieces such as a skirting comprises a sleeve of galvanised steel or the like shaped and dimensioned to fit over the workpiece and to be secured at any desired position along the length of the workpiece by fixing means such as a screw 110. The device comprises a pair of opposed templates 102,104 with guide slots 112,114,116,118 for cutting the workpiece. By positioning a workpiece between and passing a saw or other cutting tool between selected opposed guide slots, the device can be used for making joints in various configurations, by cutting workpieces at different angles.

Description

GUIDE DEVICE FOR CUTTING ELONGATE WORKPIECES
This invention relates to a guide device for cutting and shaping elongate:orkpieces, particularly wooden workpieces such as skirting boards.
Cuttir.g 2,a-ae elongate;crkpeces such -iS skirting boards accurately to tie correct length on site Cai1 he difficult in the 6S-rlCe OI mear,s for ho'dir.g the workpiece in position relative to tile cutting de;Tlce such as a saw. Skirting boards for example have to have their ends C,lt at particular angles, typically 45 , to enable them to form neat mtre joints in the corders of the room. The present invention therefore aims to provide a device which can be secured to an elongate workpiece and guide a saw or other cutting tool so that the workpiece can be cut t- tale correct angle.n any single operation.
The present invention provides a guide device for cutting elongate wcrkpi, -Ges, corr, prising a pair of templates spaced apart in fixed positions relative to one another, with an aperture to enable an elongate workplace to pass through the device, the templates being connected together above and below the aperture, wherein at least one guide slot is provided in each template, at least one said guide slot in ore template being offset relative to a guide slot in the other template whereby a cutting tool passing through both said guide slots will be held at a fixed angle relative to a workplace passing through the aperture.
-ramping means Ire preferably provided for securing a workpiece extending between a pair of said guide slots.
The templates are preferably of elongate rectangular shape, and held in a spaced relationship parallel to one another.
Preferahly fixably secured at both ends by struts or webs extending between them. In one preferred embodiment, the templates are spaced by webs which themselves include one or more slcts extending beween respective pairs of guide slots in the templates.
line err.plate is preferably made Of metal, more preferably ga.varised stee, n-,akirlg it suitably robust for both indoor and oaLdocr ise. -t an be rna.de from sheet steel or other material such as alumirium, ,r indeed non metals such as glass fibre reinforced plastics. In the latter case, the whole device can be moulded.
4 preferred emcodirRent Of the invention will now be described with reference to tr,e accompanying drawings wherein: Fat Glare:i ski - a perspect::,e V-it.-.w Of a multi-purpose guide device in accordance with a first embodiment of the invention; Figure 2 shows a perspect ve view of a device according to a second embodiment <: F the invention; and Figure 3 is a horizontal cross section on the line III of Figure 2.
Referring now to Figure 1, a guide device in the form of a S1e(-\TO qeerally ir,dicat=.d by 60 has a pair of opposed openings 66 in two opposite sides, to allow the passage between two opposed parallel templates 50, 60 of an elongate workpiece SUC}I as a plank to be cut -at a desired angle, for example to form Lithe Joints.
Screw holes 62, 64 are provided to enable the workpiece to be clamped in position in the aperture 66, the screws themselves being omitted from this figure for clarity. Corresponding screw holes may be provided on the opposite side of the sleeve, and in other portions of the device if desired. Opposed pairs of cutting slots 70 and 72, 74 and 76, ,8 and 80, and 82 and 84 are formed in two opposite templates of the sleeve, to enable a wcricpiece ic be cat lo different places and at different angles.
It Will be apparent that a wc-<kpiece could also be slid down the central op_rliIlg of the sleeve of Figure 9, to be cut or.c,i. dinaLl: using any of the four pairs of opposed slots.
Fictive 2 shows a device generally indicated by 100, again in the form c' a sleeve having an aperture 115 through which a workplace such as a wooden plank can be passed for cutting.
rrhe secede compr Saks a pair of parallel templates 102, 104 which are: secured spaced a fixed distance from one another by transverse webs 106, 108, suitably by welding.
To secure a wcrkpiece in position, a screw 110 is provided in a slot 112 and can be moved vertically to any desired position.
Instead of having the screw mont-ed in such a slot, screws could be courted in individual threaded bores as in the case of the device of Figure 1. Lfore than one such screw can be provided if Necessary, in , rder to secure a workpiece against any longitudinal, lateral or twisting movement.
The template 102 is provided w th a guide slot 119, and template 104 is provided with Stride slot 116, 118. Guide slots 114 and 116 are positioned opposite one another so that a cut can be made perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of a workpiece.
The guide slot 118 is offset relative to guide slot 114 so that a saw passing between the two will be at a 45 angle relative to tile templates and to a workpiece clamped between them. A precise and accurate 45 mitre joint can thus be cut and formed.
Slots in the webs 106, 108 connect the guide slots of the two templates, so that a saw can pass right through a workplace rest,ra or. one Of the vebs, without grating against the web.
Thus, Guide sl-,.s 120, 121 connect Guide slots 114 and 116 and the o.. fsEt glide slots 11', 118 are connected by slots 122, 126 it, the respectable webs 108, 106.
The device of Figure 2 can for example be made of galvanised steel or alminium. To reduce weight, holes such as 128 can be drilled through eacr> Of the templates, without significantly weakening the templates. The welds between templates and webs create i rigid structure in which the alignment of the guide slots is rnaintair-,d at the precise required angles and spacings.
In Figure 3, ,a plank 140 is shown clamped in position in the device 100 of Figure 2 by the screw clamp 110, which holds the plans firmly against the template 104, a bottom edge of the plank eating ore web 108. A saw blade 150 or the like is passed through guide slots 114, 118, and thus held at a precise 45 angle act-oss the workpiece. The plank can thus be cut through at 45" the whole way until the saw blade reaches the slot 122 in web l-)8. Each half of Lee plank can then be used to form a 45 m-'tre joint.
