Abstract

A tidal barrage made up of multiple water wheel section casings 6 extracts energy from a tidal river and converts it to electricity. Each casing 6 contains a water wheel 3 and is able to rise and fall with the tide by pumping water into and out of its hollow structure with water pump 7. The water wheels 3 are connected to AC electrical generating plant 5 via driveshaft 4. Supporting columns 2 guide the moveable sections 6 and support the generating plant 5 and are connected to seabed foundations 1.

WATER WHEEL TIDAL BARRAGE
The invention relates to a cost effective method of extracting the energy contained in a tidal river and converting it mto electrical energy It can be used on any suitable tidal river to generate electricity It can be also used in suitable places to prevent flooding replacing dykes and at the same time generating useful electricity The tidal barrage is made up of multiple identical waterwheel casings mounted side by side across the tidal river The casings are made t'rom steel and rise and fall with the tide inside concrete foundations laid across the seabed The electrical power generated by each section is combined and fed into the electrical transmission network Figures I and 2 Figure I shows an end view of a single barrage section Figure 2 shows a front view of two barrage sections Each numbered item is described as follows 1. Foundations These are made in sections and laid across the seabed side by side 2. Supporting columns I Guide the sections as they move up and down 2 Support the AC generating plant and housing 3 Bind the foundation sections together 3. Water wheel Rotates as water passes through it It is connected by gearing to a driveshaft.
4. Driveshaft Transfers rotational energy from the waterwheel to the AC electrical generating plant 5. AC generating plant Transfers the driveshaft rotational energy into 3 phase electrical power.
6. Section casing Moves up and down with the tide by pumping water in and out of its hollow structure.
7. Water Pump A water pump comlected to inter-pal piping within the waterwheel casing.
8. Water Level The water level either side of the barrage is not usually the same height 9. Seabed To which the foundations are laid

Claims (1)

  1. Claims I A water wheel connected by gearing to a driveshaft that acts as a
prime mover in as AC electrical generating', plant 2 Foundation sections laid across the seabed that house waterwheel casing 3 Supporting columns that guide the waterwheel casing, support the AC electrical generating plant, and bind the foundation sections together 4 A water pump connected to internal piping within the waterwheel casing
