Abstract

A mobile hoist comprising a mast 18, jib 12, sling 10 and a wheeled chassis 19, has a pair of powered drive wheels 15 mounted on the wheeled chassis 19 which enables the hoist to be power driven. The wheels 15 can be lowered, to allow the hoist to be powered or retracted to allow the hoist to be pushed manually. When the wheels 15 are lowered to the ground, the front castors 16 are raised from the ground. The wheels 15 may be driven by a mechanism which is concealed within the horizontal leg portions of the wheeled chassis. The hoist can be powered for lateral movement.

Description

POWER ASSISTED MOBILE PATIENT IIOIST
This invention relates to mobile patient handling equipment as used in hospitals and nursing homes.
The current method of lifting and moving the disabled and elderly is by use of an fabric sling that encompasses the individual. The sling is attached to the boom or jib and then the individual can be liPced by means of hydraulic jack or electric motors.
Once the patient has been raised, the hoist operator physically pulls and pushes the hoist on it's castors to manoeuvre patient over bed or bath, before lowering.
Most mobile patient hoists have a maximum working load of 125Kgs or 20 stones, and hospitals hoists are rated up to 300Kgs or 48 stones.
Because all mobile patient hoists are mounted on castors, changing direction means that all four castors have to rotate through 180 degrees, increasing the effort required to move the individual. The hoist operator has to push and steer the patient hoist rather like a supermarket trolley. Because patient hoists can be used on all flat surfaces castor wheel diameters have increased in size to help in the problem of moving the hoist. However, this has a detrimental effect on the hoists use, as most hospital beds have very little clearance for the hoist chassis.
According to the present invention there is provided a twin wheel electric driven propulsion system, incorporated into each leg of the patient hoist.
The hoist looks and works like any conventional patient hoist, apart from the powered drive wheels concealed inside the leg sections, which lower and retract when required.
This enables the hoist operator to lift the patient in the normal way, allowing the hoist to position it's self below the patient, to move the hoist the operator twists the handle grips on each side to propel forward and reverse.
Once the handle grips are twisted, the drive wheels are lowered to the ground lifting the front castors by 6 mm. This gives maximum traction on all surfaces, and as the wheels are rotating prior to contact with the ground improves take off.
As soon as the hand grips are released, the drive wheels stop and retract up inside the legs.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows in perspective, a power assisted hoist a rest.
Figure 2 shows the hoist chassis with wheels up in the normal position Figure 3 illustrates how the driven wheels are lowered to the ground.
Referring to the drawing the powered assisted mobile hoist comprises a sling lo a jib 12 that is connected to the mast 18 and mounted on a wheeled chassisl9 with front castor 16 and propelled by drive unit 15 controlled by hand grip 1 1.
In order to operate the powered assisted mobile hoist as illistrated in Figl, the battery powered motors that provide lifting and driven motion, and are energised by twisting the two handle grips forward or back. This starts the drive wheels turning, and intern lowers the drive wheels 15 until the front castor 16 is clear of the ground shown in Fig 3.
Should the hoist operator wish to turn left or right, releasing one of the handle grips 1 1 will turn the hoist on it's axis.
Only when both handle grips have been released, will the hoist automatically return to normal operation with all four castors on the ground shown in Fig 2.

Claims (6)

1 A mobile patient hoist with powered driven wheels that assist the operator in moving laterally.
2 A mobile patient hoist as claimed in Claim 1 wherein powered driven wheels lower and retract automatically.
3 A mobile patient hoist as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein powered driven wheels are lowered to raise the front castors.
4 A mobile patient hoist as claimed in Claim 2 or Claim 3, wherein the drive mechanism is concealed inside the leg sections.
A mobile patient hoist as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the operating controls enable powered lateral movement.
6 A mobile patient hoist substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1-3 of the accompanying drawings.
