Abstract
A baby earner comprises adjustable straps to secure a baby to the carrier, shoulder and waist straps to attach the carrier to the person carrying the baby carrier where the waist straps are detachable from the carrier, a foam mattress back to the carrier that incorporates a head hugger to protect the baby's head and a plastic mat that is attached to the carrier. The shoulder straps may be permanently attached to the top of the foam mattress allowing the baby carrier to face inwards or outwards by turning the baby carrier to inwards or outwards before passing the shoulder straps over the shoulders of the person carrying the baby carrier and attaching the waist straps to the baby carrier. The plastic mat 4 maybe unfolded and used as a travel bed that is secured onto the back of the foam mattress via poppers. A weather cover 10 and visor 23 may be concealed in a pouch 21 on the top of the head hugger 3. The cover may completely cover the carrier and baby and has a clear section with air holes 24 to allow the baby to see and breathe easily.
Description
BABY CARRIER WITH TRAVEL BED
The invention relates to a baby carrier of the type that fits onto a person so that a baby can be carried in it on the front of the person.
Such a carrier is well-known, however some have the disadvantage that they do not support a baby's back and head sufficiently, due to the back of the carrier not being high enough or the material it is manufactured from not being rigid enough.
An object of this invention is to provide a baby carrier that supports a baby's back and head sufficiently, with the added feature of it being used as a travel bed.
This invention provides a baby carrier that can be adjusted in length and breadth for the baby; straps for the user that detach from the sides of the carrier in two places; that allows the baby to face inwards and outwards, and a plastic mat that is attached to the back of the carrier that folds open to allow the carrier to lie horizontally only.
It is preferred that the carrier is manufactured using cotton, acrylic, or polyester fabric with a cotton or foam filling.
The embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE 1 shows the carrier that the baby is put into with the head hugger shown in two . . . pop- ! FIGURE 2 shows how.the carrier opens.
FIGURE 3 shows how the plastic mat unfolds from the back of the carrier.
FIGURE 4 shows the carrier in the travel bed position.
FIGURE 5 shows how the breadth of the carrier is adjusted.
FIGURE 6 shows how the length of the carrier is adjusted.
FIGURE 7 shows the side view of the carrier with the carrier facing inwards and outwards.
FIGURE 8 shows the pouch attached to the side of the user's waist strap.
FIGURE 9 shows how the visor folds out and the weather cover for the carrier.
FIGURE lO shows the weather cover on the carrier when it is facing inwards and outwards.
FIGURE 11 shows how the user puts on the carrier.
As shown in Figure 1, the carrier comprises a full body strap 1 with a thick foam back 2, a head hugger 3, a plastic mat backing 4, and a weather cover 10 and visor 23 concealed in a pouch 21. The body strap 1 opens flat as shown in figure 2, to allow the baby to be put in the carrier easily by lying it on the foam back 2. The body strap 1 is put over the baby and secured by buckles 8 and Velcrosides 7. The head hugger 3 folds around the baby's head by attaching flap 9 to the buckle 8 by the use of a metal popper 20. Cal)
Figure 2 shows the carrier opened. Velcro, sides 7 and buckles 8 detach to allow the body strap 1 to open and lie flat.
Figure 3 shows the back of the carrier with the plastic mat 4 folded when the carrier is being used to carry the baby, and unfolded when the carrier is being used as a travel bed.
When folded, the plastic mat 4 is held in position by poppers 11. Ridges 19 on the plastic mat 4 allow the mat to bend easily when folded. The bottom of the plastic mat 4 comes into contact with the surface the carrier has been laid upon, protecting the carrier from the surface as shown in Figure 4.
Figure S shows how the flaps 6 adjust the breadth of the carrier. The flaps 6 are attached
U - J
to the body strap 1 along one side. The flaps 6 have Velcroon them that allow them to attach to the body strap. The flaps 6 are opened and pulled towards the middle of the body strap 1 to adj ust the breadth of the carrier. The flaps 6 have elastic inside the top and bottom to allow some give if the carrier is adjusted to its smallest breadth.
Figure 6 shows how the body strap 1 is adjusted in length. There are three positions the length can be set to as shown by the poppers 14. Flap 13 is attached to the inside front of the body strap 1, and has poppers underneath which attach to poppers 14. Flap 12 is attached to the inside back of the body strap 1, and covers flap 13 to protect the baby from the poppers 14.
Figure 7 shows the side view of the carrier with the user straps 1 S and 16, with the carrier facing inwards and outwards. The shoulder straps 16 are permanently attached at one end to the top of the foam back 2, and at the other end to the waist strap 1 S. The shoulder straps 16 cross over each other on the back. The shoulder straps 16 and the waist strap l S can be adjusted in length. The waist strap I S attaches to the carrier at each side of the carrier on the foam back 2 by buckles S. The waist strap 1 S detaches from the foam back 2 to allow the user to take the carrier off. To change the way the carrier faces the user detaches the waist strap l S from the foam back 2 and turns the carrier around, and then attaches the waist strap 1 S to the foam back 2 again.
Figure 8 shows the pouch 17 at each side of the waist strap 15. The pouch has a zipper 18 on each side. When the carrier is changed from the inwards position to the outwards position, the pouch is flipped over as shown, so that the user still has use of it.
Figure 9 shows the visor 23 folding out of the pouch 21. The weather cover 10 is folded inside the pouch 21 on top of the visor 23. The cover 10 can be taken out of the pouch 21 and then put over the carrier. The cover 10 has an elasticated opening, which makes it easier to pull the cover 10 over the carrier. The cover 10 has a clear back with air holes 24 so that when the baby is facing outwards they can see through the cover and breathe easily. The shoulder straps 16 and the waist strap 15 stop the cover from completely covering the baby's face when the baby is facing inwards.
Figure 10 shows the weather cover 10 and visor 23 on the baby carrier when it is facing inwards and outwards. It can be seen that when the carrier is facing outwards it can be seen through the cover 10.
Figure 11 shows how the user puts the waist 16 and shoulder straps 15 on. The shoulder straps l 5 go over the user's head as shown. The waist strap 16 then goes around the user's back and is attached to the foam back 2 of the carrier by buckles 5.
The carrier is laid flat with the plastic mat 4 folded andtoching the surface. The body strap I is opened flat by releasing buckles 8 and Velcro sides 7. Once the baby has been laid down on the foam back 2 of t, h carrier, the body strap 2 is put over the baby and secured by buckles 8 and Velcrosides 7. The shoulder straps 16 are pulled over the user's head and the waist strap I S is attached to the side of the foam back 2 by buckles 5. The flaps 9 on the head hugger 3 are attached to the buckles 8 by poppers 20 to allow the head hugger 3 to curve around the baby's head. The plastic mat 4 is unfolded by releasing poppers l l. The carrier is laid horizontally with the plastic mat touching the surface it is being put on. The buckles 5 are released to allow the user to take off the waist strap 15 and the shoulder strap 16. The waist strap 15 can then be attached to the foam back 2 again to allow the straps sit on the plastic mat 4 that has been unfolded.
