Abstract
An optical disk container (3) has a base (31) with a stem (310) extending upwardly from its centre. A writing tool holding device (33) is provided which has a central through hole (331), through which the stem (310) of the base may extend to hold the writing tool holding device (33) over the base above the disks (4). One side of the writing tool holding device (33) is provided with at least one receiving section (332) for holding a respective writing tool (5).
Description
OPTICAL DISK CONTAINER WITH A
WRITING TOOL HOLDING DEVICE
The present invention relates to an optical disk container.
An optical disk is a widely employed recording medium for storing digital data which may include, for example, music, software, and images. Optical disk formats include audio or music compact disks (CD), video compact disks (VCD), and digital versatile disks (DVD). The phrase "optical disk" will be used throughout the specification and claims to generally refer to CDs, VCDs, DVDs and other formats. When an optical disk is not in use, it should be properly stored in a container to avoid contamination which might cause a computer, for example, to fail to read the optical disk.
Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of a known optical disk container 10 which includes a base 11 and a cover 12. The base 11 is in the form of a round plate and has a stem 110 projecting upwardly from a centre of the base 11.
A plurality of optical disks 20, each of which includes a central hole 210, may be stacked sequentially on the base 11 with the stem of the base 11 extending through the aligned central holes 210 of the optical disks 20. The cover 12 is a hollow, generally cylindrical member which is arranged to fit onto the base 11. The cover 12 and the base 11 may be firmly connected to one another through the engagement of radially outwardly extending retaining plates 120 provided along a lower rim of the cover 12 with a plurality of catches 111 provided along a peripheral edge of the base 11.
Most known optical disk containers, such as that disclosed in Taiwanese Patent Publication No. 529605 and that described with reference to Figure 1, provide only the single function of storing optical disks therein.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved optical disk container.
According to the present invention there is provided an optical disc container comprising a base having a stem extending upwardly from its centre, and a writing tool holding device having a central through hole, the writing tool holding device being positionable in said optical disk container above the base with the stem of the base extending through said central through hole, wherein said writing tool holding device is provided on one side with at least one receiving section arranged to receive a writing tool therein.
The provision of a writing tool holding device within a container of embodiments of the invention enables writing tools to be stored together with the optical disks. When it is required to mark information on a surface of an optical disk, for example, to identify the optical disk for the future, an appropriate writing tool is conveniently and readily available.
In an embodiment, the or each said receiving section is provided with at least one retaining bracket at an outer edge thereof.
Additionally and/or alternatively, the or each said receiving section is provided with at least one inwardly projecting retaining lug at an outer edge thereof.
Preferably, the or each said receiving section is an open-topped recess.
In a preferred embodiment, a cap may be provided and may be arranged to engage with the side of said writing tool holding device having the or each said receiving section.
Embodiments of the present invention will hereinafter be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of a known optical disk container; Figure 2 shows a perspective view of an assembled optical disk container of an embodiment of the present invention; Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view of a first embodiment of an optical disk container as shown in Figure 2; Figure 4 is an exploded perspective view of a second embodiment of an optical disk container as shown in Figure 2; Figure 5 is an exploded perspective view of a third embodiment of an optical disk container as shown in Figure 2; Figure 6 is an exploded perspective view of a fourth embodiment of an optical disk container as shown in Figure 2; Figure 7 is an exploded perspective view of a fifth embodiment of an optical disk container as shown in Figure 2; and Figure 8 is an exploded perspective view of a sixth embodiment of an optical disk container as shown in Figure 2.
Figures 2 and 3 illustrate a first embodiment of an optical disk container having a writing tool holding device of the present invention. As shown, the optical disk container, generally referenced 3, has a base 31, a cover 32, and a writing tool holding device 33. The base 31 is provided at its centre with an upwardly projecting stem 310. An optical disk, as 4, provided with a central hole 41 may be safely positioned on the base 31 with the stem 310 of the base 31 extending through the central hole 41 of the optical disk 4.
The writing tool holding device 33 is arranged to hold one or more writing tools 5 in the optical disk container 3, and is provided at its centre with a through hole 331, through which the stem 310 of the base 31 may extend. The writing tool holding device 33 is also provided on one side with at least one receiving section 332 for receiving and holding a respective writing tool 5.
In one embodiment of the invention, the or each receiving section 332 is provided at an outer edge with at least one upwardly projecting retaining bracket 3321. Different versions of such brackets 3321 are shown in Figures 3 and 4. Additionally and/or alternatively, the or each receiving section 332 is provided with at least one inwardly projecting retaining lug 3322. Such retaining lugs 3322 are illustrated in Figures 5 and 6. The retaining bracket(s) 3321 and/or the retaining lug(s) 3322, are arranged to stably hold a writing tool 5 in a respective receiving section 332.
In another embodiment of the invention, the or each receiving section 332 is in the form of an open-topped recess, as illustrated in Figures 5, 6, and 7. Additionally and/or alternatively a cap 6 (Figure 8) may be provided within the container 3 to locate above the writing tool holding device 33 in the assembled position. This cap 6 protects the or each writing tool 5 against dust and also prevents undesired separation of the or each writing tool 5 from its respective receiving section 332, for example, because of excessive vibration of the optical disk container 3.
In a further embodiment of the invention as shown in Figure 8, the writing tool holding device 33 is additionally and/or alternatively provided with at least one clamping means 3323 along its outer periphery for firmly clamping the cap 6 to a top of the writing tool holding device 33.
The cover 32 of the container 3 is arranged to be closely fitted to the base 31. As can be clearly seen from the figures, the cover 32 is provided along its lower rim with a plurality of radially outwardly extending retaining plates 321. The base 31 is correspondingly provided along its circumferential edge with a plurality of upwardly extending catches 311. The cover 32 may be firmly held to the top of the base 31 by engaging the retaining plates 321 with the catches 311.
It will be appreciated that variations in and modifications of the embodiments as described and illustrated may be made within the scope of the invention as defined by the accompanying claims. For example, the cap 6 may be attached to the top of the writing tool holding device 33 using adhesive means. Additionally and/or alternatively, the writing tool holding device 33 may have its side which is provided with at least one receiving section 332 facing the base 31 or the opposite side without the receiving section(s) 332 may face towards the base 31.
Claims (8)
1. An optical disk container comprising a base having a stem extending upwardly from its centre, and a writing tool holding device having a central through hole, the writing tool holding device being positionable in said optical disk container above the base with the stem of the base extending through said central through hole, wherein said writing tool holding device is provided on one side with at least one receiving section arranged to receive a writing tool 1 0 therein.
2. An optical disk container as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the or each said receiving section is provided with at least one retaining bracket at an outer edge thereof.
3. An optical disk container as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the or each said receiving section is an open-topped recess.
4. An optical disk container as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the or each said receiving section is provided with at least one inwardly projecting retaining lug at an outer edge thereof.
5. An optical disk container as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein a cap is provided and is arranged to engage with the side of said writing tool holding device having the or each said receiving section.
6. An optical disk container as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein said writing tool holding device is provided along its outer periphery with at least one clamping means for clamping a cap to the side of said writing tool holding device having the or each said receiving section.
7. An optical disk container as claimed in any preceding claim, further comprising a cover arranged to fit onto said base.
8. An optical disk container substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figures 2 to 8 of the accompanying drawings.
