Abstract

241,444. Strong, H. L., and Forster, T. E. March 4, 1925. Thrashing - machines. - A thrashing-machine comprises a cylindrical chamber provided with rotating arms, the unthrashed grain being fed into the chamber at the front end and the straw and chaff discharged at the other, while the grain is discharged at the bottom to a rotary conveyer which feeds it to a cleaning device at the rear of the chamber; the cleaning device comprises reciprocating sifters and is provided with discharge openings for the grain and chaff, and with a passage for returning unthrashed ears to the conveyer. The chaff from the cleaning device and the straw are discharged by a fan placed between the thrashing chamber and the cleaning device. The unthrashed grain is fed by a conveyer 10, Fig. 2, past rotating band cutters 12 to the chamber 5, in which rotate the beaters 19, the outer ends of which are inclined to the rear and are bent laterally oppositely to the direction of rotation. The straw and chaff are discharged up a shoot 61 by means of a fan 20 mounted on the beater shaft 18. The grain falls through an opening 13 fitted with pivoted angle iron bars 27 the overlapping edges of which are provided with notches 28 forming passages for the grain; the bars may be adjusted on their pivots by a bar 29. The grain falls into a conduit 14 the lower side of which is perforated and fitted with an adjustable shutter for the discharge of small seeds, and the grain is fed therein by means of helically-arranged blades 25 on a shaft 23 to a chain conveyer 42, Fig. 3, which discharges it into the inlet 43 of the shaker shoe 33; the front of the conduit 14 is provided with adjustable draught openings 31. The grain fed to the shaker shoe 33 passes to chaffer 45, and thence through the sieve 46 to a shoot 48. Chaff, light dust, &c. from the chaffer passes through a conduit 53 to the rear of the fan housing 17 and is discharged. A second conduit 55 leads unthrashed or partly thrashed grain back to the conduit 14; a blower fan 50 discharges into the bottom of the shaker shoe.. The grain from the shoot 48 is raised by an elevator 57 to a weighing machine 59 and discharged by a shoot 60. The feeding conveyer 10 and band cutters are driven by a clutch which becomes inoperative when the speed falls owing to clogging of the material in the thrashing chamber.
