Inflatable Cot
The present invention relates to an inflatable cot.
Known inflatable cots comprise a base and inflatable side panels, the base and side panels defining a region for accommodating an infant.
A problem with known inflatable cots is that of providing adequate support for the infant.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved inflatable cot.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided an inflatable cot comprising an inflatable base having an inner base section and an outer base section, and a plurality of inflatable side panels, in which the inner base section is supported off the ground.
By supporting the inner base section off the ground, the infant is provided with improved support.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided an inflatable cot comprising an inflatable base having an inner base section and an outer base section, and a plurality of inflatable side panels, in which the inner base section, and/or at least one of the plurality of side panels comprises a first layer and a second layer, wherein at least one channel is disposed between and joined to the first and second layers so as to define a non-inflatable region therebetween.
According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided an inflatable cot comprising an inflatable base having an inner base section and an outer base section, and a plurality of inflatable side panels, in which at least one of the plurality of side panels includes a noninflatable section around its periphery.
The invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective front view of an inflatable cot according to the present invention, Figure 2 is a perspective rear view of the inflatable cot of figure 1, Figure 3 is a perspective end view of the inflatable cot of figure 1, Figure 4 is a perspective end view of the inflatable cot of figure 1, Figure S is a sectional perspective view of the base of the inflatable cot of figure 1, Figure 6 is an end view of the base of the inflatable cot of figure 1, Figure 7 is a plan view of the base of the inflatable cot of figure 1, Figure 8 is a front view showing the first side panel of the inflatable cot of figure 1, Figure 9 is a sectional end view along A-A of the first side panel, Figure 10 is a front view showing the second side panel of the inflatable cot of figure 1, Figure 11 is a sectional end view along B- B of the second side panel, Figure 12 is a front view showing the third side panel of the inflatable cot of figure 1, Figure 13 is a sectional end view along C-C of the third side panel, Figure 14 is a front view showing the fourth side panel of the inflatable cot of figure 1, Figure 15 is a sectional end view along C-C of the fourth side panel, and Figure 16 is a perspective view of the panel support structure of the inflatable cot of figure 1.
With reference to figures 1 to 4, there is shown an inflatable cot 10 (in its inflated condition) comprising a base 12 and a plurality of side panels in the form of first 14, second 16, third 18, and fourth 20 side panels.
The base 12 and side panels 14,16,18,20, are made from non-toxic Rayon PVC.
Alternatively, other suitable non-toxic plastic materials may be used.
The base 12 and side panels 14,16,18,20 are described below.
The base 12 comprises a first layer in the form of an upper sheet 22, and a second layer in the form of a lower sheet 24 (figures 5 and 6). The upper sheet 22 has a periphery 26, and the lower sheet 24 has a periphery 28. The peripheries are substantially rectangular in shape with rounded corners 29 (figure 7).
The upper 22 and lower 24 sheets are joined at their peripheries 26,28 by a weld 30. A further weld 32 positioned inboard of weld 30 forms an additional join between the upper 22 and lower 24 sheets so as to create an inflatable region 34 defining an outer base section 36, and an inflatable region 38 defining an inner base section 40.
A plurality of equi-spaced hollow cylindrical channels 42 are welded to the inside of both the upper 22 and lower 24 sheets of the inner base section 40. The cylindrical channels 42 define non-inflatable regions 43 between the upper 22 and lower 24 sheets.
The upper sheet 22 includes a plurality of apertures 44 in fluid communication with the channels 42. The lower sheet 24 includes a second aperture 46 in fluid communication with the channel. The diameter of the apertures 44 in the upper sheet 22 is sufficiently large to allow air to pass through, but sufficiently small to prevent the digits of an infant becoming trapped. The infant will not come into contact with the second apertures 46 since they are in the lower sheet 24, and therefore the diameter is equal to that of the channel so as to maximise air flow therethrough.
The outer base section 36 and the inner base section 40 are independently inflatable using separate non-return valves 48,50. In an alternative embodiment, the inner and outer base sections can be arranged such that the inflatable regions 34,38 are in gaseous communication, and therefore inflate together.
The first side panel 14 comprises inner 52 and outer 54 sheets similar to the upper 22 and lower 24 sheets of the inner base section 40. A mesh window 56 is located centrally in the first side panel 14 between the inner 52 and outer 54 sheets. The mesh window 56 has a mesh size which prevents insects from passing therethrough, but allows air to flow into the cot to provide ventilation (figures 8 and 9).
The inner 52 and outer 54 sheets have a periphery defined by a top edge 58, a bottom edge 60, a left edge 62, and a right edge 64. The inner 52 and outer 54 sheets are joined at their peripheries by a weld 66. A further weld 68 positioned below weld 66 forms an additional join between the inner 52 and outer 54 sheets so as to create a first inflatable region 70 defining an elongate top tube 72. A weld 72, positioned inboard of the bottom 60, left 62, and right 64 edges, and inboard of weld 68 joins the inner 52 and outer 54 sheets together so as to create a second inflatable region 74.
The area between the weld 72 and the bottom 60, left 62, and right 64 edges, and weld 68 defines a non-inflatable section 76.
The first side panel 14 includes six hollow cylindrical channels 77 (not shown in figure 9) which are identical to those in the inner base section 40 arranged in threes either side of the mesh window 56.
The first inflatable region 70 is inflatable independently from the second inflatable region 74 using a non-return valve 78 (shown in figure 2 and figure 10) identical to that used for the base 12.
The second inflatable region 74 is independently inflatable using a nonreturn valve 80 identical to that used for the base.
The second side panel 16 comprises an inner 82 and an outer 84 sheet similar to the inner 52 and outer 54 sheets of the first side panel 14. The inner 82 and outer 84 sheets are welded together in a similar way to the first side panel 14 so as to create a first inflatable region 86 which defines an arched end tube 88 comprising a pair of substantially vertical portions 90 and an arched portion 92, and a second inflatable region 94. A non-inflatable region 96 is formed between the first 86 and second 94 inflatable regions by welding the inner 82 and outer 84 sheets together in the same way as described in relation to the first side panel 14 (figures 10 and 11).
The second side panel 16 includes five hollow cylindrical channels 98 identical to those in the first side panel 14, arranged in an arc-like manner in the upper half of the second side panel 16. The lower half of the second side panel 16 includes three additional supports in the form of plastic inserts 100 inserted between and welded to the inner 82 and outer 84 sheets. Typically the plastic inserts have a height H of 200 mm and a width W of 50 mm.
The first inflatable region 86 is inflatable independently from the second inflatable region 94 using the non-return valve 78 (shown in figure 2 and figure 10).
The second inflatable region 94 is independently inflatable using a nonreturn valve 102 identical to that used for the base 12.
The third side panel 18 comprises an inner 104 and an outer 106 sheet identical to the inner 52 and outer 54 sheets of the first side panel 14. The inner 104 and outer 106 sheets are welded together in an identical way to the first side panel 14 so as to create a first inflatable region 108 defining an elongate top tube 110 identical to elongate top tube 72 of the first side panel 14, and a second inflatable region 112 identical to the second inflatable region 74 of the second side panel 16. The second inflatable region 112 is defined within a weld 113 which has a top portion 115 and a bottom portion 117.
The third side panel 18 has the same dimensions, and is identical to the first side panel 14 except that, instead of a mesh window and cylindrical channels, the second inflatable region 112 includes a plurality of equispaced vertical welds 121 joining the inner 112 and outer 114 sheets. The length Lw of the welds 121 is less then the height HI of the second inflatable region 112. The welds 121 are arranged such that alternate welds run from the top portion 115, and then the bottom portion 117 of the weld 113 (figures 12 and 13).
A non-inflatable section 116 is formed around the second inflatable region 112 by welding the inner 104 and outer 106 sheets together in the same way as described in relation to the first side panel 14.
The first inflatable region 108 is inflatable independently from the second inflatable region 112 using the non-return valve 78 (shown in figure 2 and figure 10).
The second inflatable region 112 is independently inflatable using a nonreturn valve 118 identical to that used for the base 12.
The fourth side panel 20 comprises inner 120 and outer 122 sheets identical to the inner 82 and outer 84 sheets of the second side panel 16. The inner 120 and outer 122 sheets are welded together in an identical way to the second side panel 16 so as to create a first inflatable region 124 which defines an arched end tube 126 comprising a pair of substantially vertical portions 128 and an arched portion 130, and a second inflatable region 132. A non-inflatable region 134 is formed between the first 124 and second 132 inflatable regions by welding the inner 120 and outer 122 sheets together in the same way as described in relation to the second side panel 16.
The fourth side panel 20 has the same dimensions, and is identical to the second side panel 16 except that, instead of including cylindrical channels and internal supports, the second inflatable region 132 includes a plurality of equi- spaced vertical welds 136 arranged in the same way as in the second side panel 16.
The first inflatable region 124 is inflatable independently from the second inflatable region 132 using the non-return valve 78 (shown in figure 2 and figure 10).
The second inflatable region 132 is independently inflatable using a nonreturn valve 138 identical to that used for the base 12.
Preferably, the thickness of the upper 22 and lower 24 sheets of the base, and the inner 52,82,104,120 and outer 54,84,106,122 sheets is equal to or greater than 0.4 mm.
The base 12 and side panels 14, 16, 18, 20 are joined together as follows: The first side panel 14 is joined to the second side panel 16 by welding the left edge 62 to the arched end tube 88, and to the fourth side panel 20 by welding the right edge 64 to the arched end tube 126. A slit (not shown) is created in the end of the arched end tubes 88,126 and the elongate top tube 72 inside the area where the elongate top tube 72 is welded to the arched end tubes 88,126 so that the arched end tubes 88, 126 and the elongate top tube 72 are in gaseous communication.
The first side panel 14 is joined to the outer base section 36 by welding the bottom edge 60 to the outer base section 36.
The third side panel 18 is joined to the second 16 and fourth 20 side panels, and to the outer base section 36, in the same way as the first side panel 14 is joined to the second 16 and fourth 20 side panels.
The second 16 and fourth 20 side panels are joined to the outer base section 36 in the same way as the first side panel 14 is joined to the outer base section 36.
Figures I to 4 show the cot 10 after inflation of the base 12 and side panels 14, 16, 18, 20 via the respective non-return valves. It can be seen that once inflated, the side panels 14, 16, 18, 20 and the base 10 define an enclosure for accommodating an infant.
The outer base section 36 is inflated via the non-return valve 48, and forms a tube having a substantially circular cross-section of diameter DB. The inner base section 40 is inflated via non-return valve 50 such that the upper 22 and lower 24 sheets are separated by a distance to, typically 50 mm, this distance being governed by the height of the cylindrical channels 42 (figure 6).
The inboard weld 32 of the base 12 is positioned such that, once inflated, the inner base section 40 is positioned off the ground, with a distance between the lower sheet 24 of the inner base section 14 and the ground of typically 50 mm (figure 6). This distance is sufficient such that when an infant is in the cot 10, i.e. the inner base section 40 is subject to the weight of the infant, the inner base section 40 remains off the ground.
The first inflatable regions 70,86,108,124 of the side panels are defined by the arched end tubes 88,126 and the elongate top tubes 72,110, and since they are in gaseous communication, the first inflatable regions 70, 86,108,124 are inflated via the single non-return valve 78. Once inflated, the arched end tubes 88,126 and the elongate top tubes 72, 110 are substantially circular in cross-section with a diameter DT (figure 9, 11, 13, 15), with all four tubes 72,88,110,126 defining an independently inflatable panel support structure 111 (figure 16).
The second inflatable region 74 of the first side panel 14 is inflated via the non-return valve such that the inner 52 and outer 54 sheets are separated by a distance t, which is less than DT and DB (figure 9).
The second inflatable region 94 of the second side panel 16 is inflated via the non-return valve 102 such that the inner 82 and outer 84 sheets are separated by the same distance t, as the first side panel 14 (figure 11).
The second inflatable region 112 of the third side panel 18 is inflated via the non-return valve 112 such that a plurality of substantially vertical tubes 109 are formed in the inner 104 and outer 106 sheets. The vertical tubes 109 have a diameter DV which is less than DT and DB (figure 13).
The second inflatable region 132 of the fourth side panel 20 is inflated via non-return valve 138 in the same way as the second side panel 16 such that a plurality of substantially vertical tubes 133 are formed in the inner 120 and outer 122 sheets. The vertical tubes 133 have the same diameter Dv as the vertical tubes 109 of the third side panel 18 (figure 15).
After inflation of the cot 10: The non-inflatable section 76 of the first side panel 14 is between the outer base section 36, the vertical portion 90 of the second side panel 16, the vertical portion 128 of the fourth side panel 20, and the top elongate tube 72 of the first side panel 14 (figures 8 and 9).
The non-inflatable section 96 of the second side panel 16 is between the outer base section 36, and the arched end tube 88 (figures 10 and 11).
The non-inflatable section 116 of the third side panel 18 is between the outer base section 36, the vertical portion 90 of the second side panel 16, the vertical portion 128 of the fourth side panel 20, and the top elongate tube 110 of the third side panel 18 (figures 12 and 13).
The non-inflatable section 134 of the fourth side panel 14 is between the outer base section 36, and the arched end tube 126 (figures 14 and 15).
When an infant is in the cot 10, the fact that the inner base section 40 is positioned off the ground provides the infant with increased support, since, firstly the infants centre of gravity is centralised within the outer base section 36, and secondly the infant is not resting on the ground.
The fact that the infants centre of gravity is centralised within the outer base section 36 gives the cot more stability, and therefore further reduces the already small likelihood of the cot toppling over.
The combination of the inner base section 40 being positioned off the ground, and the apertures 44,46 in the channels 42, enables air to flow under the inner base section 40, through the apertures 44,6, and into the region where the infant is accommodated, thereby improving the ventilation. The channels 42 also act in a bellow like manner so as to draw air into the cot when the infant moves on the inner base section 40, thereby increasing the flow of air into the cot.
Furthermore, since the inner base section 40 is positioned off the ground, it is prevented from becoming contaminated and/or punctured by material on the ground.
The non-inflatable regions 43 defined by the channels 42 further provide a degree of cushioning between the upper 22 and lower 24 sheets of the inner base section 40 which increases support to the infant.
Since the channels 42 are joined to both the upper 22 and lower 24 sheets, the upper 22 and lower 24 sheets are restrained during inflation such that the inner base section 40 is less likely to bulge, and therefore remains substantially level. This is an important safety aspect since bulging of the inner base section 40 would otherwise lead to the formation of hollows which can cause suffocation or entrapment to the infant.
The channels 77,98 in the first 14 and second 16 side panels also prevent those panels from bulging when being inflated in the same way as the inner base section 40, as well as allowing air to flow into the cot, and increasing the rigidity. The plastic inserts 100 in the second side panel 16 also increase the rigidity of the second side panel 16.
Providing a panel support structure 11 which is independently inflatable, reduces the risk of the infant becoming trapped due to deflation of any of the second inflatable regions of the side panels since puncture of any one or more of the side panels will not result in deflation of the panel support structure 111. The panel support structure 11 also increases the overall rigidity of the inflatable cot 10.
The non-inflatable sections 76,96,116,134 allow a degree of movement between the first and second inflatable regions of each of the side panels, and therefore reduce the likelihood of the cot deforming as it is inflated.
Since the diameter Dv of the vertical tubes in the third 18 and fourth 20 side panels, and the separation to between the inner and outer sheets of the first 14 and second 16 side panels, is less than the diameter Dv of the tubes of the panel support structure 111 and the diameter DB of the tube of the outer base section 36, the infant is afforded increased protection in the unlikely event that the cot topples over, since the second inflatable regions of the side panels will remain off the ground.
It will be appreciated that the rounded corners 29 of the outer base section 36, and the arched nature of the arched end tubes 88,126 enable a stronger weld to be formed.
It will be further appreciated that the non-return valves on the respective panels/sections allow the cot to be deflated so as to occupy less space, for example during storage or when travelling, and inflated when required to accommodate the infant.
In an alternative embodiment, the first, second, third, and fourth side panels can be arranged differently. For example, a mesh window can be provided in more than one side panel. It is also possible to provide additional support inserts, or channels where it is deemed necessary.
In the embodiment described above, the inflatable cot comprises a plurality of independently inflatable sections, i.e. first and second inflatable regions of the side panels, inner and outer base sections, and the panel support structure, and therefore if one of the sections is punctured, the others will not deflate. This reduces the risk to the infant in the cot. In other embodiments, the sections need not all be independently inflatable, for example, the panel support structure and the outer base section can be inflatable together.
In such a case it would be necessary to provide slits in the outer base section where the vertical portions of the arched end tubes are joined to the outer base section such that they are both in gaseous communication.
