Abstract
A brake carrier 144 (ie., an anchor plate / anchor bracket) for a sliding / floating calliper disc brake 110 comprising a carrier body 144 for mounting transverse to an axis of a vehicle axle 142 and having an inboard (not visible) and outboard face, first and second sleeves 166 extending axially from the inboard face for fitment of a brake calliper 170, the outboard face being free from calliper 170 and outboard brake pad 178 support structures. The outboard face may be substantially planar in the region of the guide sleeves 166. The carrier 144 may also comprise inboard brake pad abutments 148, and may be secured directly to the axle 142.
Description
Brake Carrier This invention generally relates to a brake carrier, in
particular a brake carrier for a sliding caliper disc brake.
Commercial vehicle trailer axles typically include a simple beam axle that is effectively hung from the trailer chassis by leaf springs or a trailing arm air suspension arrangement. In situations where it is desirable to provide braking at such wheels, there is a requirement for an arrangement that provides a fixed base to which the brake torque associated with the operation of the brake components can be transmitted. Conventional arrangements include an axle adapter secured to the axle with a separate brake carrier then mounted to the axle adapter.
In order to obviate the need for an axle adapter, the present applicant proposed in published application EP1293405 a brake carrier 44 secured directly to an axle 42, as shown in Fig. 2. The brake carrier 44 includes an opening 46 through which a portion of the axle 42 is received, prior to the brake carrier 44 being secured to the axle by welding or other suitable means of attachment. The brake carrier 44 includes an inboard abutment 48 and containment surfaces 50 that are integrally formed as a single piece with the portion of the brake carrier that is secured directly to the axle 42. The containment surfaces extend in an axial outboard direction. An outboard abutment 52 is secured to the containment surfaces 50 using bolts 54. The abutments 48 and 52 operate to maintain disc brake pads in position relative to a rotor (not shown) conventionally mounted for rotation together with the vehicle wheel to be braked, and transmit the braking torque loads to the axle. The containment surfaces further act as a support for a brake caliper slidably mounted to the carrier 44.
Whilst the part-count, weight, and assembly time of this arrangement is an improvement over that of using a separate brake carrier an axle adapter, bolting of abutment 52 to the carrier 44 is still needed. The containment surfaces and carrier represent weight that it would be desirable to remove.
DEl9857074 (Knorr-Bremse) discloses a similar type of carrier, but in which the abutment 52 of Fig. 2 is effectively dispensed with and replaced with a suitable support provided in the outboard side of the brake caliper. However, the embodiments disclosed in this document still provided with containment surfaces to transmit the load induced in the caliper during braking through the carrier and to the axle.
The present invention seeks to overcome or at least mitigate the problems of the prior art.
One aspect of the present invention a brake carrier for a sliding caliper disc brake comprising a carrier body for mounting transverse to an axis of a vehicle axle and having an inboard and an outboard face, first and second sleeves extending axially from the inboard face for fitment of a brake caliper, the outboard face being free from caliper and outboard brake pad support structures.
A further aspect of the present invention provides a disc brake comprising a brake carrier comprising a carrier body for mounting transverse to an axis of a vehicle axle and having an inboard and an outboard face, first and second sleeves extending axially from the inboard face for fitment of a brake caliper, the outboard face being free from caliper and outboard brake pad support structures, a brake caliper being slidably mounted thereon.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a vehicle to which an assembly of the present invention may be mounted; Figure 2 schematically illustrates a prior art brake carrier assembly; Figure 3 is an exploded view of a brake incorporating a brake carrier assembly according to the present invention; Figure 4 is a partial cross-sectional view through a caliper of a brake incorporating the carrier assembly through plane 4-4 of Fig 5; and Figure 5 is a schematic plan view of the brake of Fig. 3.
Figure I shows a vehicle 20 having a cab portion 22 and a trailer portion 24. Such commercial vehicles are well known. A plurality of wheels 26 are associated with the trailer portion 24 and are suspended from a trailer chassis in a generally known manner so that the wheels 26 rotate about the axes 28.
A carrier assembly 140 of a sliding caliper disc brake 110 according to this invention is shown in Figure 3. An axle 142 is supported relative to the vehicle chassis in a conventional manner (not shown). A brake carrier 144 is secured directly to the axle 142. The brake carrier 144 includes an opening 146 through which a portion of the axle 142 is received prior to the brake carrier 144 being secured to the axle. In alternative embodiments, this opening may not fully encircle the axle. For example it may be semicircular. In such embodiments, the contact area of the opening maybe increased by having a greater axial depth than the remainder of the carrier to enable the connection between the carrier and axle to be strengthened.
In a preferred embodiment the brake carrier assembly 140 is welded to the axle. Other known ways of attaching the assembly may, however, be employed.
The brake carrier 144 is substantially planar includes an inboard abutment 148 and that is integrally formed as a single piece with the portion of the brake carrier 144 that is secured directly to the axle 142. The inboard abutment 148 is in the form of a window or recess having radial abutment surfaces 160 and circumferential abutment surfaces 162 at the ends thereof. The abutment is dimensioned to receive a conventional inboard brake pad 164 and maintain it in position radially and circumferentially relative to a brake rotor 188 (Fig. 5). In order to support the brake pad 47 as the friction lining thereof wears as it advances towards the brake rotor, surfaces 160 and 162 are deeper in an axial direction of axle 142 than the remainder of the carrier 144. In other embodiments, this need not necessarily be the case.
It should be noted by comparison with the prior art carrier of Fig. 2, that containment surfaces 50 extending orthogonally to the carrier 44 in outboard direction are omitted.
A pair of guide sleeves 166 are mounted to the inboard face of carrier 144 circumferentially either side of the inboard abutment 148. The sleeves 166 may differ in length and diameter from one another. In this embodiment, the securement is achieved by inserting bolts 168 from the inboard side of the sleeves 166 through bores provided in the sleeves (not visible) and securing the bolts in complementary threaded axial apertures of the carrier 166. The sleeves 166 are provided with a smooth external sliding surface by a suitable process, such as machining The brake further comprises a brake caliper 170 having a housing portion 172 and a bridge portion 174. The housing portion 172 contains within it the mechanism for advancing brake pad 164 towards the brake rotor in order to apply the brake. Typically, this mechanism comprises an operating shaft (not shown) for amplifing a force supplied by an air chamber push rod (not shown) and pistons or tappets 176 that contact the brake pad 164, to transmit the braking force from the operating shaft.
The bridge portion 174 of the caliper 170 extends over the rotor and enables the force that is applied to the brake pad 164 to be transmitted to a second brake pad 178. The second brake pad 178 is mounted relative to the bridge and is positioned so as to contact the opposing face of the rotor. The bridge 174 is provided with a recess having circumferential 184 and a radial 186 abutment surfaces in order to support brake pad 178. By fitting the outboard brake pad 178 directly to the caliper, the requirement for an outboard equivalent of abutment 148 of the carrier is dispensed with, and the overall weight of the brake 110 can therefore be reduced.
Caliper 170 is mounted on the carrier 144 by complementary bores 180 of the caliper housing 172 provided either side of the pistons, into which sleeves 166 of the carrier achieve a close fit. In use, this sleeve and bore arrangement enables the caliper 170 to move inboard relative to the carrier 144 as the friction material of the brake pads 164 and 178 is worn away, enabling both pads to contribute an equal braking force.
Referring to Fig. 5, during application of the brake 110 to slow the vehicle 20 to which the brake is fitted, the friction generated between the inboard brake pad 164 and rotor 188 and in particular the outboard brake pad 178 and the rotor generates forces X1 and X2 that are transmitted to the caliper 170 as shear forces, and are offset by axial distances Y1 and Y2 from the sleeves 166 and bores 180 that mount the caliper to the carrier 144. A bending moment between the caliper and carrier is also generated due to the axial offset. Previously, it has been thought necessary to either mount the outboard pad 178 within an abutment of the carrier, as in EP1293405 A2, or to provide containment surfaces/supports that extend parallel to the axis of the axle as in DE19857074 so that the entirety of this bending moment and shear force is not transmitted through the sleeves 166 and bores 180. The present applicant has however recognised that contrary to this previous belief, the sleeves and bores provide a sufficiently strong connection to take the entirety of this load, without requiring any additional supports.
It should be noted that although the brake has been illustrated in a position uppermost relative to the axle, it may be rotated to any suitable angular position, as is dictated by the position of other components.
The preceding description is exemplary rather than limiting in nature. Variations and modifications to the disclosed examples may become apparent to those skilled in the art that do not necessarily depart from the essence of this invention. For example the sleeves may be integrally formed with caliper and machined in-situ. The brake may be used on steered axles, with suitable adaptation if required. Three or more sleeves and complementary bores may be provided in the carrier and caliper respectively to transmit the load, if required.
Claims (10)
- Claims 1. A brake carrier for a sliding caliper disc brake comprising acarrier body for mounting transverse to an axis of a vehicle axle and having an inboard and an outboard face, first and second sleeves extending axially from the inboard face for fitment of a brake caliper, the outboard face being free from caliper and outboard brake pad support structures.
- 2. A brake carrier according to claim I wherein the outboard face is substantially planar in a region around the guide sleeves
- 3. A brake carrier according to any preceding claim wherein the carrier further comprises an inboard brake pad abutment.
- 4. A brake according to claim 3 wherein the abutment comprises at least one abutment surface, the surface being deeper along the axis than the depth of the remainder of the carrier.
- 5. A brake according to any preceding claim wherein the brake carrier is configured to be secured directly to an axle.
- 6. A brake according to any preceding claim wherein the first and second sleeves are releasably secured to the carrier.
- 7. A brake according to claims 1 to 5 wherein the sleeves are integral with the carrier.
- 8. A disc brake comprising a carrier according to any preceding claim and further comprising a caliper slidably mounted thereon.
- 9. A disc brake according to claim 8 wherein the caliper comprises a formation to support an outboard brake pad.
- 10. A disc brake according to claim 9 wherein the formation is an abutment having at least a radial and a circumferential abutment surface.
