Description

A FRAME COMPONENT FOR A FRAME OF A STRUCTURE
This invention relates to a frame component of a frame of a structure.
Temporary structures for a wide variety of uses are disclosed in my Patent Specification Nos. PCTNVO 01/04431 and UK-A-2376030. It is an aim of the present invention to provide a frame component which is especially useful for forming the structures disclosed in my said Patent
Specifications.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting of the present invention there is provided a frame component for a frame of structure, which frame component is an elongate frame component comprising a body portion, at least one flange which extends outwardly of the body portion, and a strip of interlocking plastics material which is positioned on at least one side of the flange and which is able to be connected to and disconnected from a complementary strip of interlocking plastics material on another component of the structure by a push/pull action.
The frame component of the present invention is able to be manufactured in a cost-effective manner. The frame component is also able to be quickly and easily assembled into completed frames and completed structures. The structures may be of any suitable and appropriate shape and design, and for a wide range of purposes including temporary housing structures for use in disaster relief, garden structures for use in gardens, and play structures for use by children. The flange helps to give the frame good rigidity.
Usually, the flange will extend the entire length of the body portion.
The flange may however be shorter than the entire length of the body portion if desired.
Preferably, the body portion and the flange are formed as an extrusion. Other means may be employed for forming the body portion and the flange may be employed.
The body portion and the flange are preferably made of a plastics material. Any suitable and appropriate plastics material may be employed including polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride. Metals such for example as aluminium may also be employed.
Preferably, the strip of interlocking plastics material extends the entire length of the flange. The strip of interlocking plastics material may terminate short of the ends of the flange if desired. Also, separate strips of the interlocking plastics material may be employed instead of one continuous strip. Where several strips are employed, then these strips may be of any suitable and appropriate length.
Preferably, the strip of interlocking plastics material is stuck to the flange. Other attachment means for attaching the strip of interlocking plastics material to the flange may be employed. Where the interlocking plastics material is stuck to the flange, then any suitable and appropriate adhesive may be employed.
The flange may have only one of its sides provided with the strip of interlocking plastics material. Alternatively, the flange may have both of its sides provided with the strip of interlocking plastics material.
The frame component may be such that there is only one of the flanges. Alternatively, the frame component may be such that there are two of the flanges. Alternatively, the frame component may be such that there are three of the flanges. More than three flanges may be employed if desired.
The body portion may be a one piece hollow body portion.
Alternatively, the body portion may be a one piece solid body portion.
Alternatively, the body portion may be a concave body portion.
The frame component may include a cover member which extends outwardly from the body portion and which is for covering a joint formed when the strip of interlocking plastics material is connected to the complementary strip of interlocking plastics material.
Preferably, the cover member is a cover flange. Also preferably, the cover flange is of less width than the flange which receives the strip of interlocking plastics material.
The strip of interlocking plastics material and the complementary strip of interlocking plastics material are preferably hook and loop strips of interlocking plastics material. Such hook and loop strips of interlocking plastics material are well known under the registered trade mark Velcro.
The present invention also extends to a frame of a structure when including the frame component. The present invention further extends to a structure when including the frame.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is an exploded view of a frame component in use; Figure 2 is an enlarged view of the frame component shown in Figure 1; Figures 3, 4, 5 and 6 show four designs of frame component but without strips of interlocking plastics material; Figures 7, 8, 9 and 10 show the frame components of Figures 3, 4, 5 and 6 but provided with strips of interlocking plastics material; Figure 11 shows an alternative construction for a frame component; Figure 12 illustrates how a structure formed of the frame components may allow the ingress of water; Figure 13 shows an alternative frame component that prevents the ingress of water shown in Figure 12; Figure 14 is an exploded view of a structure that may be formed using frame components of the present invention, Figure 14 showing in enlarged form corner pieces of the structure; Figure 15 shows in assembled form the roof of the structure shown in Figure 14; Figure 16 shows a frame of an alternative structure; and Figures 17, 18 and 19 show alternative designs for the body portion of the frame component.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, there is shown a frame component 2 for a frame of a structure. The frame component 2 is an elongate frame component comprising a body portion 4 and two flanges 6, 8 which extend outwardly of the body portion 4. Each flange 6, 8 has a strip 10 of interlocking plastics material positioned on one side of the flange 6, 8 as shown. The strip 10 of interlocking plastics material is able to be connected to and disconnected from a complementary strip 12 of interlocking plastics material on another component of the structure by a push/pull action. As shown in Figure 1, the other component of the structure is a window 14 for the flange 6, and a window 16 for the flange 8. Each window 14, 16 comprises a transparent plastics sheet 18 and a frame 20.
As can best be seen from Figure 2, the flanges 6, 8 extend the entire length of the body portion 4. The body portion 4 and the flanges 6, 8 are formed as an extrusion. The extrusion is made of a plastics material.
As can also best be seen from Figure 2, the strip 10 of interlocking plastics material on each flange 6, 8 extends the entire length of each flange 6, 8. The strip 10 of interlocking plastics material on each flange 6, 8 is stuck by an adhesive to its flange 6, 8. Each flange 6, 8 has only one of its sides provided with the strip 10 of interlocking plastics material.
Figure 3 shows a body portion 22 having one flange 24. Figure 4 shows a body portion 26 having two flanges 28, 30. Figure 5 shows a body portion 32 having two flanges 34, 36. As can be seen from a comparison of Figures 4 and 5, the flanges 28, 30 in Figure 4 extend in a line, whereas the flanges 34, 36 in Figure 5 extend at an angle with respect to each other.
Figure 6 shows a body portion 38 having three flanges 40,42, 44.
Figures 7, 8, 9 and 10 correspond to Figures 3, 4, 5 and 6 respectively, and additionally show the presence of strips 10 of interlocking plastics material. In Figure 7 there is one strip 10 on one side only of the flange 24. In Figure 8 there are strips 10 on either side of the flanges 28, 30. In Figure 9 there are strips 10 on one side only of the flanges 34, 36. In Figure 10 there are strips 10 on one side only of the flanges 40, 42, 44.
All of the body portions shown in Figures 1 - 10 are one piece hollow body portions as can be seen. Figure 11 shows an alternative construction for a body portion. More specifically, Figure 11 shows a body portion 46 which is a concave body portion. The body portion 46 is provided with flanges 48, 50. Each flange 48, 50 has a strip 10 of the interlocking plastics material stuck to it. Also shown in Figure 11 is another one piece concave body portion 52 having flanges 54, 56. If these flanges 54, 56 are each provided with a strip 10 (not shown) of interlocking plastics material, then they may be adhered to the underside of the flanges 48, 50 if the underside of the flanges 48, 50 are provided with strips 10 of the interlocking plastics material. Alternatively, if a rigid one piece structure were to be required, the flanges on the body portions 46, 52 could be stuck together.
Figure 12 shows how a frame component 58 may form the ridge of a structure. The frame component 58 has a body portion 60 and flanges 62, 64. The flanges 62, 64 are each provided with a strip 10 of the interlocking plastics material. Two structural components 66 (for example side walls or side windows) are provided with complementary strips 12 of interlocking plastics material. The two strips 10, 12 are thus able to be pushed together to secure the structural components 66 to the frame component 58. Water such for example as rain may be able to get through the formed joint as indicated by arrows 68.
Figure 13 shows how the problem shown in Figure 12 can be avoided. In Figure 13, similar parts as in Figure 12 have been given the same reference numerals for ease of comparison and understanding. It will be seen from Figure 13 that the frame component 58 has been provided with a pair of cover members 70 which extend outwardly from the body portion 60. Each cover member 70 covers one of the joints formed by the strips 10, 12. Rain is indicated by the arrows 68 is directed off the cover members 70 as indicated by the arrows 72. As can be seen from Figure 13, the cover members 70 are in the form of cover flanges. The cover members are of less width than the flanges 62, 64 which receive the strips 10 of interlocking plastics material.
Figure 14 shows in exploded form a structure 74 comprising various frame components including frame components 76. The various frame components are able to be connected together by connector components 80. The connector components 80 may be provided with removable plugs 82 if desired. The plugs 82 can be removed in order that one or more rod or pole components can be attached in series if desired. The connector components 80 also have a shroud 84 as shown.
Figure 15 shows a roof structure 86. The roof structure 86 would be the shape of roof that would be formed in the structure 74 shown in Figure 14.
Figure 16 shows a structure 90 having curved roof frame components 92.
Figure 17 shows a solid frame component 74 of circular cross section.
Figure 18 shows a solid frame component 76 of rectangular cross section.
Figure 19 shows a solid frame component 78 of triangular cross section.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above with reference to the drawings have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, structures other than those shown may be produced. The illustrated flanges may be regarded as wings. The single continuous strips 10, 12 may be replaced by two or more strips if desired. The windows 14, 16 need not be transparent, and the extrusion 4, 6, 8 can be of a material other than a plastics material.
