Abstract

A cable holder is disclosed that comprises a rigid coil or helix section 3 being either coated by or fitted with a flexible cover 4 that covers each coil. The cover 4 allows the centre cavity of the holder to compress and hold a cable that is introduced into the centre cavity formed by the coils, thus holding the cable without movement. The holder can secure a range of cable sizes. The holder further comprises an attachment section 1 for attaching the device to an object. This may be welded to the object. An angled section 2 may be provided between the attachment section 1 and the helix section 3 to allow clearance away from the object. The cover 4 may be flexible and made from relatively thick rubber. The helix section 3 may be straight or curved. The holder may be made from plastics or metals and be either solid or hollow.

Description

1. 241 1 690 Cable Holding Device The invention relates to a device for
attaching items of a flexible nature, for example, cables on a permanent or temporary basis to an application where required.
Clips and cable tying devices are well known securing devices. However, existing clips and cable tying devices suffer a number of problems, for example, when plastic strip cable tying devices are used they need to be physically cut to release cab es and as a consequence new cable tics are required for reattaching cables. A significant disavanta of helix based clips and hiders is mat there limited to the see of cabs they can ho d securely particular holder of a rigid constnchon In addition, for other types of clips, tools are required to enable fixing or securing the cable to the required applications.
G1474901 (United Carr Ltd) Diseases a device for type together a plurality of elongate elements such as cables the device composing two subsnbally coaxial helica straps of opposite had in their nonnal unstressed condition and pined end to end, each strap extending through at best one full tom of a helix, bow of sufficient rigidity to be self support and having sufficient flexibility for the helix to be sprung open manually.
GB2072791A (Henry Lindsay) discloses a holder for kidding an elongated article of a resilient deformable material which enables the holding portion to be wrapped around the circumference of the elongate article and subsequently, by its own inherent resilience, to revert or tent to revert to its original shape in order to hold and support the elongate article.
-
GB 2309257 (A McClure) Discloses a device for kidding a plurality of cables to and from electrical apparatus such as computers with a helix holder, which is seH-supporting on the cable it is kidding. This is also the case for application number US 2003/009735 (Shore) The helix based holders mentioned above require a specific size holder to be provided for each size of cable or cables being fixed securely to an application, This is impractical to the number of deferent sizes of cables available and this means it is expensive to manufacture all the cross section diameter holders which would be required even homers which claim to hold a range of sizes, such as the holder disclosed in GB 2027107A which is a elongate wire gripping member of substantially shape retaining and yieldable material, To overcome this the present invention provided for a cable holder of a rigid construction which can secure a range of came sizes that has a rigid coil or helix section (3) coated in or fitted with a flexible soft cover (4) over each individual coil of the helix of a thickness which allows for the centre cavity (5) of the holder to absorb and tighten in on and hold any cable which falls into the size range of that holder as a cable is introduced into the centre cavity between the coils of the helix section (3) the inserted cable is held therefore without movement. The holder also contains section (1) for attaching the device to the application where required.
Accordingly this device consists of a length of raw material preferably steel fashiord into a clip of a rigid construction which contains section (1) Fig 1 where section (1) can be welded to an application for example a farm implement section (2) Fig 1. is formed at an angle away from section (1) where this allows for clearance for section (3) away a distance equal to or greater than the cross section diameter or total cross section diameters of the cable or cables away from the application being secured by section (3) to 3v allow the cable to travel around section (3) while entering or exiting the centre cavity (5) of the helix. Section (3) is manufactured to form a helix made up of individual coils which are dipped or covered in a thick flexible material such as rubber or a material of similar properties where the spaces (6) between each coil jB a distance which allows a cable or cables to be inserted into the centre cavity(5) created by the outer coils of the helix. The advantage of this holder is the reduced need for a holder for every size cable, within ranges of cable sizes.
This device when attached to an application enables the secure retaining or releasing of a cable or cables of a flexible nature (but not exclusively limited to cables) over a distance fixed on a permanent or temporary basis by a hand twisting motion into or out of the helix section (3) of the holder.
This device can also have a curved helix section (3) where cable or cables need to be secured around a comer for protection from an application and can also have sections (3) attached in both directions away from section (1) where support away from directions of section (1) is required. This device can have a coiled or helix element section (3) of either a straight Fig. (1) or of a curved design Fig. (5) or combinations of both where an iter or items for example need to be secured around a comer of an application as the curved helix element section (3) Fig. (5) of the device can be of any degree of a curve without affecting the overall securing properties of the device as to the application's requirements.
The device can also have coiled or helix element section (3) Fig. (6) and Fig. (7). Going in opposite directions away from section (1) attached by section's (2) where section's (3) can also be of a straight or of a curved design for additional support requirements of the application. This device in any form of its basic design can have left or right turns of the coils in it's helix section (3) section (1) of the device is not exclusively limited to welding methods of attachment to an application as any other methotts including nut and bolt, screwing, welding, bonding, magnetic fixing, gluing or hook for example can also be used.
This device can be manufactured from any raw material to its overall design large or small without affecting or changing its design or the form of its securing properties. (Pr 2748866 A1) discloses a spiral dip with a mounting pin attached to the spiral, cables are inserted first into the dip and then the dip is fitted to the application.
Any item being held or secured by this device does not require any end of that item or items to be dismantled from its fixing points when for example a cable is being inserted or released from the helix coiled section (3) of this device.
The holdemtself does not need to be removed from the application to allow the cable to be removed from the holder.
Preferable this device can be made from metals steel or rigid plastics but it is not exclusively limited to these material as any raw material of any shape' round, flat, square, oblong, of a solid or hollow nature for example, which can be manufactured into the design of this device can also be used. This device as a whole or in part which may be coated or dipped in a variety of coatings, which, allows for protection against corrosion or for their electrical Insulation properties or any combination of the above.
A secound embodiment of the holder allows for section (1) to incorporate holes for the attaching of the holder to an application where rectuired, by a nut and bolt or self-tapping screws.
A third embodiment of the holder Fig. 1 where section (3) is without coating or cover (4) 5d The invention mill now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 illustrates a side view of the whole device; Figure 2 illustrates an end view of the device; Figure 3 illustrates the device with an item for example a cable inserted; Figure 4 illustrates an overall view of the device without any cable inserted; Figure 5 illustrates the device with a curved helix element; Figure 6 illustrates the device with two curves helix elements; Figure 7 illustrates an overall view of the device with two straight helix elerr ent pointing in opposite direction.
As shown in Fig. 1, the device comprises of a fixing section (1), where this continues to section (2) where section (2) is angled away from section (1) and continued for a length to the start of the first coil of the helix section t3) and is then formed into the coils of this section for the length required, where (4) is the flexable cover.
Fig. 2 illustrates the end view of the device where (5) shows a centre cavity produced by the coils of the helix and the rubber coating (4) which, can allow, for example, a cable to be secured without movement inside the cavity.
Fig, 1 (6) illustrates the spaces between the coils where the cable need to enter into the centre cavity where section (2) by allowing clearance for section (3) allows the item to travel around section 3 until the cable is inserted fully into the centre cavity as shown in Fig. 3. 6.
Fig. 5 illustrates the device containing a fixing section (1) this continues to section (2) where section (2) is angled away from section (1) and continued for a length to the start of the first coil of the curved helix section (3) and is then formed into the coated coils t4) Of the curved helix for the length required.
Fig. 6 illustrates the device containing a fixing section (1) which continues in opposite directions to section (2) where section (2) is angled away from either end of section (1) where this allows sections (3) the two curved coils or helix elements to be formed to the length required.
Fig. 7 illustrates the device containing section (1) with section (2) angled away from either end where this allows section t3) the two straight coils or helix elements to be formed to the length required in opposite directions.
