Abstract

A support rod 4 is attached to a support plate 2, for supporting a thermally insulating panel 1, by a pair of nuts 9 screwed onto the end of the rod. Two grommets 10 formed from a thermal break material sit into the hole in the support plate 2 (and in a connector strip 6) and are positioned about the rod 4 and thus thermally insulate the rod 4 and the nuts 9 from the metal parts of the support plate 2 and the connecting strip 6. Thus, cold cannot track through from the support plate to the rod 4 because of the presence of the thermal break grommets 10.

Description

2411 666 "Improvements Relating to Panel Supports" An area which is to be
kept at a desired low temperature can be surrounded by panels of thermally insulating material which are interlinked together. The ceiling panels at least may need to be supported from another structure. If this is done by using metal rods for the support, then there is the risk that metal parts to which the rod is connected may allow cold to track through to the rod. Cooling of the rod below outside ambience temperature can then give rise to condensation which may run down the rod and lead to damp and contamination within the enclosed area. It is an object of this invention to overcome this problem.
Accordingly, the invention provides a panel of thermally insulating material having a support structure in the form of one or more support rods, each rod being secured through an opening in a plate disposed within the panel, with the rod passing down to the plate through the panel, the plate being sandwiched between a collar on the rod and a nut secured onto the end of the rod, the structure also incorporating a thermally insulating sleeve of thermal break material which thermally insulates the rod, the collar and the nut from the plate.
The insulating sleeve of thermal material ensures that cold cannot then track through from the plate to the rod.
Preferably the insulating sleeve will comprise the combination of a grommet on one side of and projecting into the opening in the plate and a washer on the other side of the plate. The washer can additionally be in the form of a grommet projecting into the other side in the opening in the plate.
The plate can comprise part of a U-shaped member provided with flanges locating onto one face of the panel.
A connector strip may additionally be secured between the collar and the nut, together with the plate, with the sleeve passing through both the plate and the connector strip. The connector plate can be used to connect adjacent panels together.
The invention may be performed in various ways and a preferred example thereof will now be described, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a cross section through part of a panel incorporating the modification of this invention; and Figure 2 is an exploded view of essential parts of the structure shown in Figure 1.
A panel to form part of an enclosure for a space, which is to be kept at a controlled low temperature, has a main body 1 of thermally insulating material.
At strategic points support plates 2 of U-shaped form are set into the panel 1.
These provide a mounting within a top portion 3 of the plate to which a support rod 4 may be secured. Additionally, the support plate 2 has flanges 5 which support and are connected to the panel 1. There may also be a connector strip 6 laid within the U of the support plate 2. This will track through to adjacent panels to interlink panels together. The opening formed in the panel 1 will be filled with thermally insulating material such as mineral fibre 7. Insulating material 8 can also be provided about the projecting portion of the rod 4.
The rod 4 is attached to the top portion 3 of the support plate 2 by a pair l of nuts 9 onto the end of the rod. Between the nuts there are two grommets 10 formed from a thermal break material. These grommets sit into the hole in the support plate 2 (and in the connector strip 6) and are positioned about the rod 4 and thus thermally insulate the rod 4 and the nuts 9 from the metal parts of the support plate 2 and the connecting strip 6. Thus, cold cannot track through from the support plate to the rod 4 because of the presence of the thermal break grommets 10.
The various parts of this assembly can be seen clearly from Figure 2 and it will be noted that there are also washers 11 between the nuts 9 and the grommets 10. In positions where no connector strip 6 is present, then the lower grommet 10 can be replaced by just a washer formed from the thermal break material. The upper nut 9 could be replaced by a fixed collar on the rod.
