Abstract

A light bulb contains an air freshening ingredient (C) between two layers of glass, the innermost of which (A) creates a vacuum around the filament, the outer layer (B) being perforated with tiny holes that allow the air freshening ingredient to diffuse into the air as a result of the heat of the bulb.

DESCRIPTION: SCENTED LIGHT BULBS AND HEALTH-
ENHANCING LIGHT BULBS
This invention relates to light bulbs which will fit all common standardized bulb fixtures and perform the function of providing light.
As little as six percent of the electrical power used by a conventional light bulb is actually converted into visible light. The remaining energy is wasted creating heat that serves no purpose to the consumer.
The object of this invention is to provide a light bulb that harnesses this previously wasted heat energy to help improve the consumer's immediate environment in a specific way.
The heat created by the light bulb activates the circulation of air freshening, deodorizing, health-enhancing or insect-repelling ingredients that are encased between two layers of glass that surround the filament.
The invention will be of similar size, weight and shape to existing light bulbs and will use the same internal mechanisms that create the light and heat in conventional models.
A conventional light bulb has one layer of glass that performs the function of creating a vacuum. This invention differs from a regular light bulb in that it has two layers of glass - an inner layer to create the vacuum in the same way as a normal light bulb, and an outer layer. The two layers are sufficiently different in size to create a space between the two layers.
The inner layer performs the function of creating the pressurized environment that is necessary for the light mechanism to work. The outer layer is perforated with tiny holes. The space between the two glass layers is filled with a specially formulated solid ingredient that will give off a steady stream of vapour when the light bulb is activated.
The solid substance between the two layers will take the form of crystals which will conduct light. The crystals will be designed to give off vapour when heated in a similar fashion to the substances contained in plug-in air- fresheners. The heat from the filament will thus stimulate the gentle vaporisation of the crystals. The vapour passes from between the two glass layers into the room through the perforations in the outer layer.
It is possible that the lighting effect of this invention will differ from that provided by a regular light bulb because of the refraction that will take place as the light passes through the crystals. Consumers will have the option of choosing versions of this invention with specially coloured crystals which are designed to create a specific atmospheric lighting effect.
Different ranges of products will be designed to have different positive effects on the air in the immediate environment. The effect of the invention depends on the formula of the crystals inside the bulb.
The following are some examples of the specific product ranges which will be derived from this invention: 1) Mood These bulbs will release a fragrance which aims to create a particular mood such as romantic, relaxing/therapeutic, spring, summer, floral, fruit etc. There will be a bulb with crystals that contain a substance that is thought to be a traditional/ancient aphrodisiac. These bulbs can also be low wattage and may be tinted to enhance mood.
2) Health The health range will include a bulb that is designed to aid physical performance for application in gyms or other sports arenas. These bulbs will give off vapours containing a substance that are scientifically proven to help improve strength and/or stamina. Similarly, some bulbs will be designed for the workplace and variously infused with mild stimulants (caffeine, taurine, ginseng), oxygen, vitamins, or anti-stress ingredients.
3) Insect Repellant The design will be applied to a special insectrepelling bulb. One of the main hazards of operating light bulbs in areas which have large biting-insect populations is that such insects are attracted to the light.
The insect-repelling action of the crystals in this model will eliminate this nuisance, which is inherent to conventional bulbs.
The substance from which the crystals in all models are made will be completely safe and will have the effect of making very subtle perceptible (mood) or imperceptible (health, insect-repelling) differences to the air in the room in which the light bulb is activated.

Claims (6)

1. A light bulb including a perforated outer glass layer outside the conventional layer that creates the vacuum for the filament so that a space is created between the two layers to placate an ingredient that is heated by the bulb to release a vapour into the surrounding area.
2. A lighting device as stated in Claim I where the ingredient between the layers takes the form of porous crystals that disperse an active ingredient similar to that which is contained in plug-in air-fresheners through the perforated outer layer when the bulb is operational.
3. A light bulb as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim 2 where the residual heat created by the electrical energy of the bulb activates the vaporization of the ingredient that is contained between the two layers described in Claim 1.
4. A light bulb as claimed in any preceding Claims where the bulb fits standard light fittings and is operated in the same manner as a conventional incandescent light bulb.
5. A light bulb as claimed in any preceding claim which is made from all the materials which are used in to make a standard light bulb plus a crystal ingredient which is infused with the active ingredient which disperses when heated.
6. A light bulb substantially as herein described above and illustrated in the
