Abstract
A safety sleeve assembly for a javelin comprises a strong, flexible outer sheath 5 with a lightweight cushioning device 7. The sleeve may be attached to the trailing tip of the javelin 11, providing a waterproof aerodynamic shape. The cushioning device may be made of lightweight metal or plastic and is of a spring or corrugated design. An attachment 2 to the front of the javelin maintains the balance of the javelin.

A two-part attachment for a Javelin The invention relates to an attachment
for existing javelins that is simple to attach and will make them safer to use.
The javelin attachment is a result of the increasing focus on safety issues in Physical education lessons. With threats of legal action now commonplace in schools it is important that potential hazardous activities are modified and re-evaluated in accordance with the changing world. A well organised 'text- book' Javelin lesson can still be classed as a hazardous lesson. In such a lesson the most dangerous part of the javelin is the rear part and not the front. Deaths and injuries are still occurring as a result of users becoming impaled on this part of the javelin when retrieving it after a throw. Most institutions such as schools cannot afford the cost of replacing their entire stock of items such as javelins.
The javelin attachment primarily protects the user from this potentially lethal hazard. The javelin would be produced to varying weights to allow it to be marketed as a teaching aid. Being able to alter the weight of the javelin would also allow it to be used as an effective training tool for competitors.
For such improvements in safety and versatility there is only a minimal effect on aerodynamic performance. This would be a simple and costeffective way of improving user safety.
DESCRIPTION
Accordingly, the javelin attachment consists of two parts. Both are aerodynamic in shape. The first attachment is applied to the rear end of the javelin and contains a cushioning device. The second attachment is placed within the front one-third of the javelin. The outer sheath of the rear attachment and the front attachment are to be made of a flexible, durable, water proof material.
The material can withstand varying temperatures without perishing. The placing and relative weights of both attachments would ensure the balance of the javelin. The javelin attachment would be produced to varying weights which would allow the same javelin to be used by performers of all abilities Both will be simple to attach.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying crowing in which: Figure 1 shows the front attachment from a side view Figure 2 shows a cross-sectional view of the rear attachment from the side Figure 3 shows a cross-sectional view of the rear attachment from the cushioning device contact point with the javelin Figure 4 shows a cross sectional view of the rear attachment before attachment to the javelin The front attachment The main objective of this attachment is to balance the front of the javelin with the weight of the rear attachment.
As shown in Figure 1, the front attachment consists of a weighted strap which wraps around the javelin (11) it uses a fastening system to hold it in position within the front third of the javelin (11). The join between the javelin (11) and the sheath is tapered (1). The strap is shaped for Hero dynamical purposes (2) and can be secured in position by simply applying tape to both ends.

As shown in Figure 2, the entire attachment is approximately 6 inches long (3) and meets the javelin (11) in a tapered fashion (4). The entire sheath is made of a flexible, strong and light, rubber-like material (5). The tip of the sheath is thicker to maintain a firm shape (6). Within the sheath is a cushioning device that is partly corrugated in shape and contracts when force is applied from the tip of the sheath (6) but will not contract past the tip of the javelin (11). This is to be made from a strong and durable material such as lightweight metal or plastic. The sheath is fixed to the cushioning device (8). The entire shape of the attachment is designed to be Hero dynamical. As shown in Figure 3, the cushioning device will be held in position by flexible teeth on its inside (9). Preferably the rear attachment will be received as shown in figure 4 and applied by placing the rear tip of the javelin (11) into the cushioning device and unrolling the sheath (10) onto the javelin (11) This can be held in position by simply applying tape where the sheath meets the javelin.
Claims (6)
1. A two-part attachment consisting of f legible and strong outer sheaths and a lightweight cushioning device to be positioned on the rear tip and within the front half of a javelin.
2. AS claimed in claim 1, where the cushioning device is of a spring or corrugated design.
3. As in any proceeding claim, where the cushioning device is made of metal or plastic.
4. As in any proceeding claim, where the material for the outer sheath is resistant to perishing from hot and cold temperatures and is water proof.
5. A 2 part javelin attachment substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows
1. An attachment consisting of a flexible and strong outer sheath and a lightweight cushioning device of a spring or corrugated design. This will be positioned on the rear tip and within the front half of a javelin.
2. As claimed in claim 1, with a second attachment consisting of a flexible and strong outer sheath positioned within the front half of the javelin to maintain the javelins balance. 3.
4. As in any proceeding claim, where the cushioning device is made of metal or plastic.
5. As in any proceeding claim, where the material for the outer sheath is resistant to perishing from hot and cold temperatures and is water proof.
6. A 2 part javelin attachment substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
