Abstract

The exercise machine comprises an abdominally mounted mechanism to facilitate a pulling motion, a position sensor (9, fig 2) and an electro muscular stimulation device (8, fig 2) which is responsive to feedback from the sensor. Preferably the machine includes an abdominal rest 1, a carriage 3 mounted on slide rail 2 which may be pulled towards the user by means of handles 4 and a return spring 7. Electrical pads 6 may be mounted on the abdominal rest 1. The pulling motion may be assisted by a motor (10, fig 2) which is responsive to the exercise rhythm and/or position sensor.

IMPROVED ABDOMINAL EXERCISER
The present invention relates to an improvement in an abdominal exercise machine that combines the benefit of a mechanical pull motion abdominal exerciser and an Electro Muscular Stimulation device with the use of a position sensor mounted in the abdominal exercise machine that is used to control the Electro Muscular Stimulation device in a feedback loop that is advantageously in sychronisation with the exercise motion.
Through prior art, the pull motion abdominal exercise machine, Electro Muscular Stimulation device and position sensors are known.
The invention is now described by way of example only the machine for an improved abdominal exerciser. Reference is made to Figures 1 to 2 which illustrate the invention.
Referring to accompanying drawing Figures 1 to 2, the abdominal exerciser comprises an abdominal rest 1 mounted at one end of a slide rail 2 to which is also mounted a carriage 3 with handles 4. A spring 7 mounted on the slide rail pulls the carriage 3 away from abdominal rest 1. During exercise, the abdominal rest is positioned on the abdomen and then the handles are pulled to move the carriage towards the abdominal rest. The spring 7 then pulls the carriage back to allow repeating the exercise. There is mounted within the carriage an Electro Muscular Stimulation device 8 with display panel 5 that show its status. The electrical pads 6 for the Electro Muscular Stimulation device are mounted on the abdominal rest 1. There is a position sensor 9 that determines position of carriage along slide rail 2. The position information is used to modulate the electrical output of the Electro Muscular Stimulation device 8.
Optionally, a motor 10 may be used in conjunction with Electro Muscular Stimulation device 8 and/or position sensor 9 to assist the carriage to move to maintain the exercise rhythm. The position sensor 9 may optionally be an indirect sensor such as a force sensor that measures extension force on spring 7. By prior art, the spring 7 may optionally be other mechanisms such as rubber bands or an air piston spring. - 3

Claims (3)

1. A machine comprising a pull motion abdominal mounted exercise mechanism with pull position sensor and with additional abdominal Electra Muscular Stimulation device that is responsive to feedback from pull position sensor.
2. A machine according to claim 1 wherein a motor has been added to power assist pull motion mechanism wherein the power applied to the motor is responsive to exercise rhythm settings of Electro Muscular Stimulation device.
3. A machine according to claim 1 wherein a motor has been added to power assist pull motion mechanism wherein the power applied to the motor is responsive to position sensor.
