Abstract
A stationary surf paddling exercise device comprising a frame 1 supporting a board 7 mounted on pivoting rockers 8, an upwardly extending portion 2 on the frame housing cogs 4 and cables 6 which serve to operate flywheel(s) 3 when the user pulls the cables 6 during a paddling stroke. The cables 6 may follow a defined track and may be returned to their starting position by a spring. The flywheels 3 may alternatively be mounted on the extended frame portion 2 or just one flywheel may be provided whereby the pulleys provide each other with resistance and return force. The board 7 may have a head support and may be shaped like a surfboard. The rockers 8 may pitch in line and/or roll laterally or they may be excluded. Resistance may be provided with a device other than a flywheel.

The Description
Surf Paddling Exercise Machine The invention relates to a stationary surf paddling exercise machine. More specifically, the invention relates to a machine which simulates the resistance to be overcome in a real life surfboard paddling situation.
The invention is a machine to specifically target the muscles used when paddling a surfboard. There is no current exercise machine designed to simulate the unique body position and muscle use of surfboard paddling.
The invention provides the user with a simulation of a real life surfboard paddling environment via a board which is set on a rocker pivot device and pulley cables / flywheels / gear which provide resistance to the paddling strokes.
The exerciser lies face down on the board. The board pivots laterally on its rocker pivots to simulate the unstable condition of a surfboard on water. The lateral rocking motion of the board on the rocker pivots exercises stomach muscles.
The rocking board works in conjunction with the following paddling exercise. The cable pulleys are pulled by the exerciser during a paddling stroke. The exerciser encounters resistance to the paddling strokes from the flywheel. Resistance can be increased or decreased by rotating the blades of the flywheel thereby increasing/decreasing the airflow over the blades. Each cable pulley (left and right hand) is preferably able to be pulled independently so that the exerciser can simulate a paddling environment.
Preferably the invention is made of metal and plastics materials.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: FIGURE 1 shows a side view of the exercise machine FIGURE 2 shows an overhead view of the exercise machine FIGURE 3 shows a plan view of the board rocker pivot system The invention will be better understood by referring to the drawing.
The exercise machine comprises a board (7) mounted on 2 rocker pivots (8) which in turn are mounted on the main frame member (1). An upwardly extended frame portion (2) houses cogs (4) which guide the cables via a pulley system which turn the gear systems (5) which drive the flywheel(s) (3). The flywheel(s) (3) are housed beneath the main frame (1).
The upwardly extended frame portion (2) is mounted on the front end of the main frame (1). Cogs (4) are mounted on the upwardly extended frame portion (2), allowing the cable mechanisms (6) to link to the gear system (5) of the flywheel(s) (3) which are housed beneath the main frame portion (1).
The means for driving the flywheels (3) comprise cables (6) and a gear system (5). The gear system (5) is mounted on the flywheel (3) shaft for rotation therewith. The cables (6) are attached to the gear system (5) for providing rotary motion when the cables (6) are pulled by the exerciser during paddling strokes.
When the end of the paddle stroke is reached, the exerciser releases pressure and the cable mechanism is returned to its start position by means of a spring or similar return mechanism.
Although a particular embodiment has been described, this was for the purpose of illustrating, but not limiting, the invention. Various modifications, which will come readily to the mind of one skilled in engineering, are within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
