Abstract

Blocks and shoes; force-transmitting mechanism; locking by frictional detents.-A brake for hand trucks, particularly of the sack track type, comprises brake blocks which are applied to or released from the wheels by springs under the control of a hand lever disposed adjacent one of the track handles. As shown, brake blocks E disposed one on each side of the truck are each suspended by bolts F from the flange C of an angle plate secured to the side member of the truck and are normally held raised from the wheel B by springs G. The blocks are applied to the wheels by turning a transverse shaft H connected by a crank J and a link K with a hand-lever M and provided with flattened ends H<1> which act as cams engaging the upper surface of the blocks E. The mounting of the blocks is such as to permit them to rock to a limited extent for adjustment to wheels which are not quite true. The springs G may instead be disposed on the upper parts of the bolts F so as to tend to apply the blocks to the wheels, the cam ends H<1> of the shaft H being in this case arranged beneath plates D on the upper parts of the blocks. The link K may be disposed within one of the longitudinal members of the truck.
