Description
-
- 1 2410415 Sock for a boot This invention relates to a sock for a boot and more particularly, but not exclusively, a sock to fit into a Wellington boot and which folds over the top of the boot When wearing a Wellington boot, they can often feel cold, they do not fit tightly, and often especially with young children the sock inside slips down to their toes. This is
uncomfortable:
It is an object of the invention to eliminate or mitigate such problems.
According to the invention there is provided a sock of flexible material for removably fitting in a boot, the sock including a lower, foot portion for fitting snugly within the boot, an upper portion for fitting snugly around the inside of the upper portion of the boot and an outer portion that extends downwardly from the top of the upper portion for fitting snugly around the outside of the top of the boot.
The fact that the outer portion fits snugly around the outside of the boot inhibits the sock from slipping down intcboot.
Preferably at least some portions of the sock, preferably at least the upper portion and more preferably both the lower and upper portions of the sock are a loose fit around a person's foot.
I he sock preferably comprises a plurality of pieces of flexible material stitched together.
The lower, foot portion may be formed of a piece of flexible material. The upper potion may be formed of a further piece of flexible material. The outer portion may be formed of a further piece of flexible material. Some or all of the pieces of material may be joined together by stitching. The stitching at one or more of the joins preferably projects on the outside of the sock. That prevents or inhibits any rubbing of the stitching on the toes or other parts of a person's leg. The stitching preferably of overlooking, or flatlocking, or heatseaming would prevent rubbing on the toes and foot.
The sock may in its natural (unstressed) state have the outer portion extending upwardly from the upper portion; in that case a user may fold the outer portion down over the top of the boot before inserting a foot into the combination of the boot and sock. Preferably, however, the outer portion extends downwardly from the upper portion in the natural state of the sock, the outer portion and the upper portion together defining a channel there between in which the top of the boot is, in use, received.
The flexible material of at least some, and preferably all, of the sock is preferably a fabric material and more preferably a fleece fabric material. An advantage of a fleece fabric material, is that it is warm, light weight, soft, with easy care. Different portions of the sock are preferably formed of materials of different weights; more particularly the outer portion of the sock is preferably formed of a material of heavier weight than the lower portion and more preferably of heavier weight than both the lower portion and the upper i - portion of the sock. For example the outer portion of the sock may be formed of a material having a weight greater than 200GSM and the lower portion may be formed of a material having a weight less than 200GSM.
According to the invention there is also provided a boot and sock combination comprising a boot and a sock as defined above, the lower, foot portion of the sock fitting snugly inside the boot, the upper portion of the sock fitting snugly around an upper portion of the boot and an outer portion of the sock extending downwardly from the top of the outer portion of the sock and fitting snugly around the outside of the top of the boot.
The sock may be of any of the forms defined above.
The boot may be a Wellington boot.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example referring to the accompanying drawings: -figures] a 1 b and 1 c show the three pieces of material employed in the sock construction -figure 2 shows how a sock can be made from the pieces of material of figures la to Ic, can fit mto a Wellington boot, and can fit over the top of the boot, and -figure 3 shows a Wellington boot fitted with the sock of figure 2 Referring first to figures la to Ic and figure 2, the sock generally comprises a lower, foot portion 1, an upper portion 2 and an outer portion 3. The foot portion 1 is made from the piece of fabric material shown in figure la. The upper portion 2 is made from the piece of fabric material shown in figure lb and the outer portion is made from the piece of fabric material shown in figure Ic. The pieces of fabric are stitched together using overlooking stitching to form the sock shown in figure 2, comprising a foot portion], an upper portion 2 and an outer portion 3 joined at the top to the upper portion 2 so that a channel is defined between the upper portion 2 and the outer portion 3. The stitching is arranged to project on the outside of the sock. l he outer portion 3 may for example have a weight in the range of 320 to 450 GSM (g per square metro) whereas the lower and/or upper portions may for example be a micro fleece fabric and may have a weight in the range of 150 to 160 GSM. The boot l O shown in figure 3 receives the foot portion 1 as a snug fit inside the foot portion l l of the boot and similarly receives the upper portion 2 as a snug fit within the upper portion 12 of the boot. The outer portion 3 of the sock extends downwardly from the top of the boot around the outside of the boot.
In use a person places the sock in the boot in the position shown in figure 2 and then inserts his or her foot into the sock. During subsequent use any tendency of the sock to work its way down the user's foot is opposed by the outer portion 3 extending around the outside of the boot. t - 3
It can be seen that the sock described above combines warmth and softness, yet is extremely light. By using micro fleece fabric 150-160 GSM in weight, and a heavier fleece fabric 320-450GSM in weight for the top of the sock. The special timbres ensure a fabric which is kind to the skin, allowing it to breathe, whilst guarding against cold. The sock is hard wearing, and has easy care with short drying times.
