Abstract

Apparatus 1 for mounting a television (2, fig.5) comprises a support 3 and a housing 4 for a set top box means, arranged so that in use the housing 4 is between the support 3 and the television (2, fig.5). Preferably the housing 4 comprises an assembly of two tray-like parts 4', 4'', one being inverted relative to the other, and secured together by tamper-proof securing elements 12, which may be securing elements. The support may comprise a member 6 supporting the housing so as to allow it to swivel about a substantially vertical axis, and slide members 9 so that the housing 4 may be moved in a direction substantially at right angles to the vertical axis. The support 3 may also be adapted for securing to a substrate, preferably to be screwed to an item of furniture. The slide members 9 may be telescopic and arranged as c-shaped channel sections.

Description

MOUNTING APPARATUS
The invention relates to mounting apparatus, particularly to apparatus for mounting a television.
Television sets are often set up for receiving and processing digital signals sent to a set over an IP network.
The digital signals are generally received and processed by an item usually known as a set top box. Televisions are often used in locations such as hotels, apartments, student accommodation etc., where the set top box is vulnerable to tampering.
It is an object ofthe invention to seek to mitigate this disadvantage.
According to the invention there is provided apparatus for mounting a television, comprising a support for a television and a housing for a set top box means for the television, the arrangement being such that in use the housing is between the support and the television.
The housing may comprise a secure housing. This provides for apparatus which, tan be rendered tamper-proo The secure housing may be substantially orthogonal in plan, may be closed on all four sides and may be of sufficient depth to house the set top box means. This provides for a relatively simple secure housing.
The housing may comprise two tray-like parts one of which is inverted relative to the other and assembled thereto to provide the housing. This provides a relatively simple construction.
The two tray-like parts may be secured together by tamper-proof securing elements. This assists in providing a secure housing.
The elements may comprise locking screws.
The set top box means may comprise an integral unit, or alternatively the set top box means may comprise a plurality of separate components. In either construction, the set top box means is secured in the secure housing.
The support may comprise a member which supports the housing for swivelling about a substantially vertical axis. This provides for adjusting the viewing position as desired.
The support may comprise slide members whereby the housing can be moved in a direction substantially at right angles to the substantially vertical axis. This provides for additional adjustment of the viewing position. The support may be adapted for securing to a substrate. This provides for a fixing of the apparatus to say an item of furniture.
The slide members may comprise telescopically arranged substantially channel section slide members. This is a relatively simple yet effective construction. - The support may be secured to a substrate such as an item of furniture by screws.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided apparatus as hereinbefore defined with a set top box means mounted in the housing.
According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided apparatus as hereinbefore defined with a television set mounted on the housing.
Apparatus embodying the invention is hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 is an exploded perspective view of apparatus according to the invention; Figs. 2 to 4 are respective plan, front elevation and bottom views of the apparatus of Fig. 1 assembled; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the apparatus of Figs. 1 to 4, mounting a television set.
Referring to the drawings there is shown apparatus 1 for mounting a television 2, comprising a support 3 for a television and a housing 4 for a set top box means 5 for the television 2, the arrangement being such that in use the housing 4 is between the support 3 and the television 2.
The support 3 comprises a turntable or swivel 6 which is supported by a base 7 which has points or positions in the form of holes 8 for receiving fixing means such as screws whereby the support 7 can be fixed to an item of furniture, or substrate, such as a shelf In this embodiment, the base 3 also has slide means 9 in the form of telescopically extensible substantially C-shaped members, the outer of which also has poirits OF>positions 8 in the form of holes for receiving fixing means such as screws. The slide means 9 allow movement of the apparatus 1 in a direction substantially at right angles to a vertical axis 10 about which the turntable 6 can swivel.
The housing 4 is a secure housing comprising two tray-like parts 4' and 4", one of which, the upper as viewed, is inverted with respect to the other, lower as viewed, part 4" so that they can be assembled together with boundary walls 11 overlapping so that they can be secured together by suitable means such as tamper-proof locking screws 12.
The lower tray part 4" is secured to the turntable 6 by a spigot 13, load washer 14 and wave spring washer 15, the spigot 13 being screwed into a boss 16 of the turntable 6 through a hole 17 in a base 18 of the lower tray part 42.
The set top box means 5, which is in the form of either an integral unit or of individual components such as a printed circuit board and other components which are not housed in a set top box closure, is fixed in the secure housing 4 by suitable securing means.
The upper tray part 4' forms a base or support for the television set 2, the tray part 4' having perforations 19 to allow for mounting and ventilation.
From the foregoing, it will be understood that the set top box means 5 is housed in, and hidden by, the housing 4 (which is intermediate the turntable 6 and the television 2) in use. Moreover, the secure housing 4 may be used to tidy cabling and supply connections to other devices such as infra-red controls 20 and notebooks 21.
The secure housing 4 may also contain speakers and amplifier(s) for providing stereo sound. 7'_ The upper tray-like part 4' of the secure housing 4 can be made to accommodate standard CRT televisions and also flat-screen TFT-LCD televisions.
Apparatus 1 as hereinbefore described with reference to the drawings provides a secure housing between the support and the television to contain the set top box means for receiving and processing digital signals sent to the televisions over the IF network and which secure housing can also be swivelled. Thus the set top box is secure, and the s apparatus 1 is thus suitable for applications such as installation in hotels, apartments, student accommodation and the like, where there is a need for such a secure, swivellable, housing.
